to me, social media is not all that bad, it depends on the individual. sincerely speaking, I have gained a lot educationally from the social media. it depends on the individual u follow on media, the group u are into etc, are they worth it? as matter of fact, I have learnt a lot of history on social media, I have always been updated and most importantly, I still find time to read my books.

more so, social media is a business platform for most our youths today. the world is global now via technology and it is pertinent that we make use of it so as not to be left out in the positive trajectory.

Online? There are numerous ways to go about it. But what I always tell people is to first pursue a path that aligns with their passion.

For instance, I discovered that I'm kinda good at writing.

So, I picked up freelance writing and I charge from #2 to #5 per word.

For a 1000 words article, I can make from #2000 to #10,000. Pretty cool, right?

To share my knowledge, I even started a blog.

Finding clients isn't easy though, especially foreigners since they believe every Nigerian is a scammer. It's not easy at all..

Mini importation, dropshipping, affiliate marketing, etc. are also great ways, but will require settling down to learn the ropes.

It isn't something you just rush in and expect results overnight.

Others will include Blogging, Vlogging (YouTube), or simply starting an offline business.

When you discover a business you want to start, stick to it until you make it.

I love applying the 2-year rule, which entails focusing on a thing for 2 years irrespective of weather is yielding result or not.

You know why? Most times, we find ourselves giving up on a lucrative idea just because of our impatient.

I am on Instagram,Facebook, whatsapp,Nairaland,YouTube etc but i am very disciplined when it comes to taking decision. When i am really to study,i keep my phone.
I have studied for 6hours with my phone by my side without pressing it.I only tap my screen to check time.
Sometimes,i will not open any social network for a week but most times,i prefer to open Nairaland and you-tube because they are very educative.
I don't know what people gain in arguing on how
many followers they have on Instagram or arguing about who have the highest likes and comment on Facebook.
Misplaced priorities.

My only addiction is twitter. That's like the only social network i'm on. deleted facebook years ago i never go on IG. But you see twitter; i spend almost all my phone time on there. And the occasional visits to NL.

social media can be addictive no doubt. but that doesn't override the benefit when you use it for the right channel.

I have met a lot of incredible data science guys on twitter. white dude who will help you when you get stuck on a project.

linked in can be provocative when you look at the standard people set for themselves, but the are a lot of takeaways for different career path on that platform.

FB and Instagram are just showbiz. not a big fan of that.

your presence of Whatsapp can be limited when you keep few circus of friends and set your privacy on the app.

all in all, what you make out on the apps define how useful or useless they make you become.

I agree to most of these points...but...social media also gives leverage.
I know a ton of people who would’ve had VERY DIFFICULT lives if not for the opportunity to sell their skill on social media.

I think you should have encouraged people to explore the “marketing” advantage of social media instead of being caught up in trying to participate in the celebrity facade or fruitless drama.

I’m with my phone most of the time and it takes absolutely nothing for me to just set my phone down and do things I need to do. I won’t lie, when you wake up in the morning and the first thing you get on is social media you will most likely not do anything else that day BUT everything that has an advantage also has a disadvantage.

I can’t recall the last time I read a book but I write ALOT and listen/watch interviews/documentaries that also educate me.
I block ALMOST all “celebrities” that come my way.
I unfollow and mute anything or gist that I feel is ‘useless’ to my wellbeing or my hustle.

People must realize that they can CONTROL what they consume. The herd mentality of “trends” is what makes social media really addictive. The fear of missing on what is happening.
I mark and remove useless trends on my feed such as all these BBNAIJA, Hollywood celebrity, Kim kardashian, Obama, Beyoncé and those other people and their bullshit because I don’t feel they cater to me. They look like coons to me.
There are things I engage in that I feel are useful to my hustle either to learn or educate other people with the little I might know.

All in all, we must learn that we have the POWER to decide what we consume as media. We shouldn’t ALLOW any and everything into our personal view and should be dedicated to cutting off anything that doesn’t aid us to our life goals. We mustn’t be a part of or know EVERYTHING.

It's been three months I uninstalled Facebook and WhatsApp from my phone and there has been peace in my home and I don't waste money on data anymore. I was so addicted to Facebook that I could spend hours arguing with strangers. Nice post anyway.

Nice piece of information. it's true and I knew this long before now when I had about 8 social media accounts and chatting at the same time in almost all while in shop. It got to a stage that most customers gets angry and leaves the shop when they receive little or no response from me just because of SM gists.

Las Las na delete come carry them gooo because the Almighty SM creators were not paying me rather my business was and I have already started loosing customers for nothing sake.

The problem is not with social media but with people. I am currently advancing my programming skills even though I browse through social media. It's all about balance and time management. I play online chess, programme, see movies, and also spiritual edification too. I believe we are our problems.

Monitor the time you spend on Facebook. When I was getting ready to quit, I started by limiting my usage to 3hrs daily. My phone has a wellbeing app that allows me to assign duration to apps.. Once it elapse, the app will shutdown! Start gradually - set a goal!
What’s the name of the app please?

You are most absolutely right. Social media can either help you make money or help you waste the little time you have.

There was a time I was so keen on building my twitter followers. Not because I wanted to make money through it but just to have followers so as to get likes and comments on my tweets. When I finally figured out the damage I had been doing to myself, by spending so much time there, I took to my heels.

I lost connection with the real world. I would rather spend all my time indoors and chat, than visit friends, go to events or meet new people. I almost became a shadow of myself, because, I was not living up to expectations of Instagram and Twitter lives.

But thankfully, I am better today. I can spend a whole week without going on twitter or Instagram. I go to twitter once in few days and Instagram too..

I am working towards building a better connection outside and also use my LinkedIn account to the fullest..

I am spending more time trying to build a better career now. Play time is over.

you are right! Op too right on his own BUT you nailed it. yes there is Addiction on one side but truly if you have something doing that keeps you really busy you wouldn't even remember online at all and this also depends on your job

We need to clear that. as they say. DATA is life is not just a saying but it is really what it is. most things now are Online marketed. for that reason you gotta stay ON

Take for example a mechanic in his workshop really busy fixing cars physically and no time for social media besides making calls for his customers and getting job done. it is so for the mechanic cuz he is super busy and have no time

But these days majority of youth are unemployed as none wish it but the stupid economy we found ourselves have deprived us of our desire to get engaged for that reason social media is the Only friend someone has except you want people die of depression and frustration

I Hope you all feel me with these few points of mine haha

If people are working in Industries and Nigeria is good there is no need for what you are saying.

People have time for it because they don't have work to do.

The only "social media" I use is nairaland. That's not to say I don't have other social media apps, but I rarely open them. Nairaland is my only addiction and it's because I have a purpose for it. I can't be controlled, I'm in control of my life.

Exactly my point too. From 8am to 5pm,i'm at work. No social media during this hours. Then I run a quick catch-up at the evening hours.
Deleting apps don't help. Cos social media on its self is educative and informative. It all depends on what content you consume. I will never delete my apps.
