CHAPTER TWENTY ONE


Bari squeezed Daniel's palm lightly, in an encouraging manner. It was the second time she was visiting the hospital. Hospital was not just a place she loved to be, she hated the smell and every other thing about it. It was a good thing that she managed to convince Daniel into agreeing with her that, telling the head doctor what happened and facing the consequences was better, than someone else spilling the beans. They got to the door, to the office of the head doctor, Daniel turned to stare at her, weakly. "Are you sure you don't want to talk to him, with me?" he asked.


"Don't worry, i will wait for you here, just go and talk to him" she gave him a reassuring smile.


He nodded and knocked swiftly on the door "come in" he heard the deep rich voice, from inside. He looked at Bari for the last time before pushing the door open. The doctor was on call, he seized the opportunity to look round the office, nothing else had changed apart from a few renovations done in the office. It was the largest office in the hospital and well furnished. The new doctor's portrait hung on the wall, exactly where the former head doctor's large portrait was hanged, before he got retired. The large sofa placed in the middle of the office, a mini dinning area, and a desk.


"Doctor Larabee, how are you doing? please have a seat" the doctor's voice brought him back to earth.


"Thank you sir" Daniel muttered going to sit down.


"Am sorry, i was on call with a patient. I hope there is no problem?" the doctor who was in his early 50s asked, pushing his spectacle up to his eyes.


"No problem sir, i just came to discuss something important with you" Daniel sighed.


"Okay, am all ears"


"Few months ago, before you got transferred to this hospital, i killed a pregnant lady and i wasn't bold enough then to report to the hospital authorities, that's the reason am here" he sighed again.


"You killed someone? how?"


"I wasn't in the right frame of mind to perform a cesarean operation, but i did, against the hospital rules. I made so many mistakes, I cut her intestines and stitched her flesh the wrong way. I was scared, i didn't want my certificate to be taken from me. I regret my action everyday, but, am ready for any punishment that would be given to me now" he let out a full breath.


"Doctor Larabee, you are one of if not the best doctor we have here in the hospital and we can't lose you. I know i just came, but I went through everybody's file and i found out that you have the highest number of successful surgeries and operations done here. It's quite unfortunate that you hid such a thing from the hospital, what were you thinking? you know the rules, do not get in the theatre if you are not emotionally okay. Surgeries are performed with the mind and not the hand. You will be suspended for 3 months, every patient in your care should be taken over by doctor Stanley Okon, including the surgeries, that's the only thing i can do for now" he shook his head in pity.


"No problem at all, sir. Am okay with it" Daniel said, smiling through pain.


"You are lucky, her family didn't find out and sue you to court. The former head doctor should be the appropriate person to handle this case, but he is retired. Just go on suspension, for now"


"Thank you sir. I will go and pack up, now" he stood up, flashed him a smile before walking out. He sighted Bari, where she stood, worry written all over her face.


"How did it go?" she asked, anxiously.


"I have been suspended, for 3 months" he shrugged.


"Ouch, am sorry, honey. This too shall pass" she said, giving him a Bear hug.


"I know, at least am happy that i have let it off my chest. We need to go to my office now, so that i can pack my belongings" he muttered, walking away while Bari followed behind.


They got to his office, he fished his key out and unlocked the door. They walked in, he picked up the landline and called someone to come over to his office.


"What and what are you exactly going to pack?" Bari asked.


"just few of my stuff, like my picture, my laptop and a few other things" he walked to the shelf, picked a few medical books and walked back to the desk.


"Hello doctor, you called me?" Lina asked as soon as she stepped in to the office, she eyed Bari a little, before turning back to Daniel.


"Yes, Lina, i called you" Daniel replied, ignoring the look she gave to Bari.


"I hope there is no problem?" she raised a brow at him.


"Can you make a list of the patients in my care?"


"Yes, i can, what happened?"


"Okay, that's good. You will make the list, and when you do, come to my office and pick up their files which you will give to doctor Stanley, he will take over from me, for now" he went to take a carton box beside the shelf.


"Are you taking a leave?" she asked.


"I have been suspended, for 3 months. Babe, please help me pack in these books into the carton while i do other things" he winked at Bari.


"Okay, babe" She smiled and walked to the desk.


"Suspension? why? what did you do?" the nurse asked, but not after hissing in disgust.


"The lady i killed inside the theatre, i told the head doctor about it and he suspended me" he shrugged.


"He shouldn't have, he just spoilt everything" she said through gritted teeth.


"What did he spoil?" Daniel asked, raising his gaze at her.


"Nothing, i need to go create the list now. We will really miss you" she shrugged.


"I will miss you all too" He replied with a smile.

All this one everybody is relieved, me I am not relieved because that woman was somebody's wife and Daniel failed to report this issue to the hospital board and as such giving Lina the power to "lord" that incident over him. Yes it was a mistake but no I am not relieved, because He failed to do the needful.
