Same thing if a Patient presents for example with Lichen Planus infection, the Physician obviously knows it's out of his jurisdiction so he refers as appropriate to a Dental Surgeon (Oral Medicine/ Oral Pathology) for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Medicine doesn't look down on Dentistry and vice versa, most times you can't even distinguish between both classes in Medical School until 500L or thereabouts.

2. He is in private practice. If your Dentist friend practices privately, then, he has no business with any strike. Well, unless the association of Private Dental Practitioners decide they have some unmet needs (that would be an oddity anyways).

3. He is not a Dentist. There a lot of quacks and wannabes. He could be a Dental Nurse or Therapist who is just out to impress you.

During Preclinical years, while the Medicine guys do Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Community Medicine or Epidemiology, Dentists do all of that + Oral Biology/ +Dental Anatomy.

At the Clinical Phase, it's much different with lots of courses that the Medicine guys have no need for. Why waste your time learning stuff you have no use for? There's a reason why you don't call a Dental Surgeon (regardless of the Surgeon title) to come deliver a breech baby. He has no business there.

The very same thing applies when a Dentist applies to Medical school, he has done lots of the course work already, he just has to go through things like Obstetrics and Gynaecology etc.

So the 3 years vs 18 months thing is justified, it does not mean Dentistry is superior or that Medicine is cheap.

2. Orthopedic Surgery
3. Burns Reconstruction
4. Microvascular Surgery

Cosmetic surgery
1. Cosmetic Dentistry

Well I am happy there is life in this our thread again, just always talking of the monotonous thing of getting admission and that is the end. More topics abeg ehn. Controversy sometimes spark ou knowledge good thing I caused it

I don't know why people are trying to place a dentist over a medical doctor or a medical doctor over a dentist, it's so obvious that the reason many of us want to go to medical school is because of ego and we get angry when another course is being equated to what we study. You are studying to be a medical doctor or dentist to impact lives, I don't know why we have to continue this war that dentistry is tougher or medicine is tougher. Do what it's for you.

Main story. A few months ago when I went to a Laboratory,CliniX to do a random test. Damn,tests are expensive not to talk more of radiology and ECG.
Initially,I was told by a MLS student about how they claim to know about Pathology and some others. But I later knew it was not all true about what he said. Saying that they diagnose using sophisticated machineries which I agree. What I later come to know is that they work independently of the Pathology which was a lie.
Few days after when I came for my results, I was talking to a Radiologists not a Radiographer a martured man like that we where in a Dark Room with big guns(machines). So i asked him about the lab leadership and he said that the biggest problem is JOHESU that they don't know their place in the health field. I read a misconception on what JOHESU saying that other Allied Héalth practicioners should head schools of Medicine or Hospitals. That is a pure hoax. There is no where in the world that Nurses head Hospitals(Except nursing homes), nor pharmacists,nor physiotherapists,nor Lab scientists nor radiographers. The only ones I have seen is those who are with MBA who administrate in hospitals. Fine they can be health Ministers, Public Health experts but there is a limitation Yes. Doctors have their fair share of the Drama caused that will be for another day.

Lab technician--->Lab Technologists ------>Lab Manager------>Pathologists. The lab manager might take independent decisions in rare cases but are more listened to by the Pathologist.

Who cares about who should head a lab? Pathologists are heading certain labs and the labs are doing well. Some are not doing well. Same thing with labs headed by medical lab sceintists. Some are doing well and some are not. All these you are doing ko necessary I swear. People are studying courses that are not even related to all these and much lower to these courses in many people's view and are still doing so well that even some doctors might envy them. There are numerous courses in the Uni. They are plenty like that not because some are better than others, but because as a society we need them all and people have to study it all. What you go for is then your problem. Stop with the comparison of different courses, because it doesn't really help. The world that awaits you out there care less about your degree but more about your personal development and determination to make an impact wherever you find yourself. Don't spend your whole life discussing all the courses in the Uni.

In life, there's a season for everything. Discussing about the seeming animosity between Pathologists and Medical Lab Scientists really adds nothing to you at this stage (I tell you this in utmost respect).

Even when you get admitted into Medicine/ Dental Surgery believe you me, Pathologists vs MLS are the very least of your worries, the very least.

If you want to make a change you need leverage.

You don't expect to see a graduate assistant vying for the post of Vice Chancellor (even if he made a first class). He has to go through all the stages, become a Professor and perhaps Dean or HOD, Senate Board Member, Student affairs Director etc, then he has leverage, sey you get.

Life is in stages.

What you should bother about now is getting into Medical school, remaining in Medical School and hopefully graduate unscathed.

Even when you get admitted into Medicine/ Dental Surgery believe you me, Pathologists vs MLS are the very least of your worries, the very least.

If you want to make a change you need leverage.

You don't expect to see a graduate assistant vying for the post of Vice Chancellor (even if he made a first class). He has to go through all the stages, become a Professor and perhaps Dean or HOD, Senate Board Member, Student affairs Director etc, then he has leverage, sey you get.

Life is in stages.

What you should bother about now is getting into Medical school, remaining in Medical School and hopefully graduate unscathed.

To begin with, the equivalent of the MB;BS is the MD (Doctor of Medicine) and for BDS is the DDS(Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD(Doctor of Dental Medicine). This apparently means holders of either degrees; MBBS or BDS are Doctors. They are dependent on each other not independent of each other.

Say for example, a Dentist knows the treatment plan for an hypertensive patient, treating a patient for such is crossing his boundaries, that's why you have things called "referrals". The Dental Surgeon refers the Patient to a Physician (Cardiologist) as appropriate.

Same thing if a Patient presents for example with Lichen Planus infection, the Physician obviously knows it's out of his jurisdiction so he refers as appropriate to a Dental Surgeon (Oral Medicine/ Oral Pathology) for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Medicine doesn't look down on Dentistry and vice versa, most times you can't even distinguish between both classes in Medical School until 500L or thereabouts.

This goes in three ways:
1. You're tripping on his Bullshit. A Dentist/Dental Surgeon is a Doctor, when ARD(Association of Resident Doctors) call for a strike, do they say only "Medical Doctors can go on strike", while exempting Dental Doctors?

How about the last MDCAN's(Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria) strike?

2. He is in private practice. If your Dentist friend practices privately, then, he has no business with any strike. Well, unless the association of Private Dental Practitioners decide they have some unmet needs (that would be an oddity anyways).

3. He is not a Dentist. There a lot of quacks and wannabes. He could be a Dental Nurse or Therapist who is just out to impress you.

I have not seen an official document stating the above as factual. However that a Physician has to spend 3 years in school to acquire the BDS does not mean Dentistry is tougher than Medicine.

During Preclinical years, while the Medicine guys do Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Community Medicine or Epidemiology, Dentists do all of that + Oral Biology/ +Dental Anatomy.

At the Clinical Phase, it's much different with lots of courses that the Medicine guys have no need for. Why waste your time learning stuff you have no use for? There's a reason why you don't call a Dental Surgeon (regardless of the Surgeon title) to come deliver a breech baby. He has no business there.

The very same thing applies when a Dentist applies to Medical school, he has done lots of the course work already, he just has to go through things like Obstetrics and Gynaecology etc.

So the 3 years vs 18 months thing is justified, it does not mean Dentistry is superior or that Medicine is cheap.

In the purview of Medicine or Dentistry, there's nothing called Cosmetology.

Branches of specialty include hairstyling, skin care, cosmetics, manicures/pedicures, non-permanent hair removal such as waxing and sugaring, and permanent hair removal processes such as electrology and intense pulsed light.

Plastic Surgery, a more appropriate term, is a broad range of specialties that are aimed at the positive restoration of the human body. The two branches: Reconstructive and Cosmetic surgery.

Reconstructive
1. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
2. Orthopedic Surgery
3. Burns Reconstruction
4. Microvascular Surgery

Cosmetic surgery
1. Cosmetic Dentistry
2. Restorative Dentistry
3. Orthognathic Surgery
4. Aesthetic Surgery (Butt Augmentation, anything that ends with plasty: Phalloplasty, Rhinoplasty etc)

Again Dentists are Doctors, Physicians are Doctors, Urologists are Doctors, Psychiatrists are Doctors, Radiologists are Doctors, Dermatologists are Doctors etc. Stop confusing yourself.

For the learned mind, Physicians and Dental Surgeons should be given equal reverence.

All of what I'd be stating was gotten from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan Prospectus (verbatim ac litteratim).

PhD. Degree in Chemical Pathology:To be admitted to this program, candidates must fulfil the requirements below:
(a) Candidates who attain a weighted average of 60% in the relevant examinations of the three semesters MSc course in Chemical Pathology of the University of Ibadan.

(b) Candidates weighted average marks in the one year MSc degree examination in Chemical Pathology is between 55-59%. Such candidate are admitted to the M.Phil/Ph.D programme and may be converted later to a Ph.D programme after two semesters (on full time registration) or four semesters (on part time registration) of satisfactory performance.

(c) Candidates who have successfully completed an M.Phil degree programme in Chemical Pathology of this University or any other University recognized by the Senate.

(d) The programme shall normally not involve course work except where the Department specifically recommends that such courses be taken for remedial purposes.

(e) Candidates can be admitted on either full time or part time registration.

(f) The degree programme shall normally not be more than six semesters for full time and ten semesters for part time registration. However, a petite of study originally approved for the M.Phil may be accepted as satisfying a specific part of the period of Ph.D degree. In no circumstances however, may a period exceeding three semesters be waived for any candidate.

(g) A candidate's registration shall normally lapse if he has not fulfilled the requirements for the award of the degree after ten semesters of full time or fourteen semesters of part time registration or am equivalent periods pro rata for a combination of part time and full time registration.

(f) Area of specialization
Candidates in consultation with the Head of Department and Supervisor(s) may specialize in any of the following areas:
(i) Clinical Enzymology
(ii) Clinical Vitaminology
(iii) Endocrinology
(iv) Free radical metabolism and Antioxidants
(v) Immunology
(vi) Lipid Metabolism
(vii) Protein Metabolism
(viii) Trace Elements Metabolism
(ix) Toxicology and

1. Read your books and enter school fess either into BDS or nursing or medlab etc. Like that when you want to stir controversy in a bid to wake a sleeping thread up, you'd have many people to argue with. The controversy you're trying to raise have been in existence long ago. We discuss them, shut up and continue the discussion later... It's not something you should just dump all here and expect people to waste their data on.
2. Get a job, get a gig, find something doing. Don't come and be wasting your precious hours here daily. You ain't impressing anyone, at least not me. Also you've dropped some blunders up there but truth be told, I do not have the time to be quoting them. See ehn, absence not only make the heart grow fonder, it gather respect for the one you're missing too.

Hello big brothers and sisters in the house.. I've never spoken here before, arguments scare me..so um I'm hoping someone would give some useful advice.. I'm a lover of dentistry ... I'm so passionate about it.. I've never even thought of medicine.dont really know y.. but I've not been so lucky. I'm currently studying medical biochemistry in uniben..in my first attempt to UI.. I wasn't even given any course..(I scored well above 250 in both jambs).
so currently,I'm really unhappy..and I don't concentrate at all..(med bch is a nice course o)I tried transferring in 100 level but for some reasons I couldn't and I'm planning on doing so again this 200 level..(we are still offering a lot of common courses )i don't really know,issit still possible?would I have to repeat my 2nd year.. anyone knows anything about this in uniben in particular..pls feel free to advise,no insults please.

We all know UI and Uniben are competitive schools so it's not really about what you scored but what other aspirants had as well and also the score in post utme. Well, transferring from any course to Mbbs is not easy, the probability is low. You can try again though but if it doesn't work out, then, you can try Jamb again if you really want to study Mbbs.

Prepare well for the post utme(if it will hold this year) and blast the hell out of it and you'll find your name on the merit list

On the other hand, if post utme doesn't hold, I hope you have a pretty good O'level result?
