Professional Qualifications are an added advantage. HSE Qualification is one of such professional qualifications that will do you a lot of good. The Oil and Gas Industry is very risky and HSE STEM is taken seriously in the industry. So, it is an added advantage.

There are steps to follow which have been enumerated in previous pages. There are various levels of qualification and certification based on diverse competencies in the discipline.

You will have to start from the basics and then choose how far/deep and what area you will love to specialize in.

HSE STEM is not limited to engineers. It is just that due to the dealing with physical phenomena, it is added advantage to understand basic or fundamental natural sciences. Being tall is only an advantage in basket ball. It does not mean short people do not play or cannot play. Engineering is simply manipulating the laws of physical sciences to serve a beneficial (or harmful) purpose of man. Hence what they have fundamentally the ability to manipulate physical principles. If you understand basic Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Math, then you can go as deep as you want in the profession.

TAKE A LOOK AT THIS MATERIAL FOR INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE, Which is a sub component of HSE STEM. To go this deep you will need knowledge of basic natural sciences.

Absolutely no problem. They feel based on your current level of qualification, you do not need to start from Level 1 (the Basics). To the best of my understanding, a Graduate is supposed to do General HSE and then move straight ahead to HSE Level 3.

Gladly take the opportunity and complete the course. Then apply for professional membership. Ensure you got information from ispon.gov.ng. Remember there are factions. I advice you work with the ones that the government has allowed to use the .gov.ng. domain extension. Even though this is still a risk due to the never ending court cases.
Really factions ?
How will one know which is govt. Approved then

It has been a real challenge for the likes of us who did not study a Course tagged "Engineering'' in our first Degree but went on overseas to study an Msc. in Engineering. As it Stands I have a Masters in Safety Engineering and have practiced Safety Engineering for years now but COREN has still not changed its rules to the 21st Century where paper qualification does not imply application of proper skill and knowledge.

I am hoping that they realize soon enough that one does not need to necessarily spend 100 years at the first degree level in a discipline tagged ''Engineering'' before having the knowledge of applying physical science principles to the design of structures, products and systems to the taste, comfort and benefit of mankind.

Lol well what would you then say about HND holders (both on NSE/COREN claused eligibility)

Sincerely it really needs to be reviewed

Thanks man, you response is very much helpful. I will still go through the ISPON route. I just called them and they said as a graduate I will have to start with GHSE then proceed to level 3. Well, I guess I will have to go through their July training.
I will do just as you suggested about applying as much as I can and see what comes first. I will most definitely come back as soon as I land something good for appropriate guidance. I hope that would be sooner than later though. Thanks once again.
Please can you help me with their contact too. I want to also register, I'm currently serving and i am based in Lagos

Good everyone
I've been following this thread for a while now and I must say I've been significantly informed by it's content. Much thanks to everyone who have contributed thus far.

I'm interested in a career in Health and Safety. I registered for GHSE(1 and 2) with ISPON and I'll be commencing classes on monday (2days from now).

I would greatly appreciate if anyone who has done this exam can share their experience on how it went/what to expect. I was informed that the exams are written after class each day. Also, if there are study materials on the course i'd appreciate of anyone is willing to share

Hi, I stumbled on this thread while researching about HSE career. I've gone through almost all the write-ups and I've learnt a lot. Actually, I have HSE 1,2&3 certifications issued by CIEHS (gotten during my NYSC). With all I've read, I know I have to start preparing for certifications that are relevant in Nigeria and internationally (really challenging because of financial constraints ). I'm very passionate about having my career along the safety line. PLEASE, I WILL LIKE TO BE ADDED TO THE WHATSAPP GROUP. My number is 09014644862. Thanks
