FG to move cargo by barges to Onitsha

Heads of maritime agencies in Nigeria have agreed to work on modalities for the movement of cargo by barges from Lagos ports to Onitsha, in Anambra state so as to ease traffic in Apapa.

Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh, disclosed this at a recent meeting of all heads of maritime agencies in Lagos

Jamoh said the meeting constituted a committee to produce a work plan for the 24-hour port system, and agreed to carry communities around the port environments along in order to ensure safe operations within the port vicinities and beyond.

We also agreed to work with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on how movement of cargoes from the ports can be done by rail to reduce the pressure on our roads.

“Our focus is also to ensure containers are moved by barges to dry ports outside the port environments. All these would help in the efficiency and effectiveness of our ports.”

Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Bala Usman, also emphasised the need for an intermodal transport system in and around the port environments. Usman said Nigeria must prioritise intermodal transportation to reap the benefits of shipping and port activities.

She said the heads of maritime agencies agreed to work with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to facilitate movement of cargo from the ports by rail.

Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Dr. George Moghalu, said safety formed a major part of the discussion.

This is better. Traffic will reduce a lot, and those stupid tankers will be few on Lagos roads.

Considering the fact that a significant number of the containers that berth in Apapa goes straight to the South Eastern part of the country

Ok,
but we must not copy everything from the west, why not develop a system whereby we can have special stations along the railway where we can have container depot specially for that purpose instead of going all the way east.

This is the way to go!

Lagos can't breathe at the moment because of the madness where 200 million people have to depend on it.

The whole stretch of Apapa/Oshodi expressway is blocked. Ships now take months just to offload and leave the Lagos ports. Nigeria continues to lose millions of dollars in revenue to Cotonue. Traffic congestion in Lagos makes the city of Lagos a nightmare, with man hours and productivity being wasted everyday in traffic jams.

Moving cargoes in barges to Onitsha in the meantime and also making the port fully functional for ships to berth in the medium to long term, is something that must be done in the interest of all.

Nice one, the economy will surely soar...

This government should stop making it obvious that they despise education. Budgets for education is always low so they are now using the corona stuff to shut it down permanently. If left for them, every pupils should remain at home till 2023 with the fight against corona as excuse.

The same corona that they have haphazardly fought to the point of ridicule.

Biko, let our students back to school because you ain't doing jack.

It’s about time. How can a country of over 200 million people be importing from a single port. It just never made sense to me throughout my life but I was hearing all types of dumb reasons why it makes sense.

Some Human beings are willing to justify any evil if you give them the chance.
