No, no, no! Iboland is a haven of discriminations and exclusions, not just about inheritance. You live on discriminations and abuse.

Never again mention SW when discussing discriminatory practice of any kind. Speak what you know, not conjectures.
Yorubas are no better.

My Elder bro married to a Yoruba lady and I'm yet to see anything inform of inheritance.
So which heaven-on-earth treatment given to your ladies are you talking about??

This is why this female always want to get married to the Yorubas so they can have right to properties.

Such a backward system. In 2020, they still regard women as nobody tueh!
Which Igbo woman wants to marry a Yoruba man? you must be day dreaming, unless time is no longer on the lady's side, no sane Igbo lady that is well brought up will want to marry a Yoruba ofe nmanu. I find it more appropriate you didnt even personalize the question to her cos we know she can't date broke boiz, I have been in different r/ship with difference babes all working class. i don't even know there salary not to talk of collectin #1 inside grin ... buh dey we still seek support every now n then which makes me wonder where there salary dey go grin growing up whatever money my mom spent in my dad absence naa borrow, book keeping she go collect am grin ... n i still see that even in my married friends home, except d man naa handicap or has no means to payback the woman will forfeit her money. i don giveup on naija gurls matter tey tey .. God keep blessing be my only prayer, it pointless prayin 4 dem.

Yes my brother, I always try to be polite, dont mind her as she wanted to turn the stuff into polite insults grin
Same here, while growing up, money my mom spent for home were written for dad to pay back. And he paid back as much as he could. I also dated working class babe and it was almost same thing. In fact, babe will be working at the same company with u and still expect u to foot the relationship bills.

I was wondering if this lady who replied my comment was trying to run away from reality or she is just messing around. I am very sure she can not date a broke guy. In fact, the richer the lady is, the more she looks for a man richer than her or at the same level with her.. But we cant count the number of men who are dating completely broke girls. I know some of us who placed our babes on monthly upkeep money and still fund the relationship.

And these ladies still want equal rights and never ready to share bills 50/50!

How many we go count? Is it those who will be asking for TF before coming to see their own bf. Or those who rely on guys for almost monthly data sub. Any one shying away from this reality is just a liar.

The life in this part of world has already given ladies one step ahead financially as against men. Most of my university female class mates all married as unemployed and broke ladies. Most of them are living fine now as a result of their husband. Some were taken abroad by their husbands, some were started business by their husbands. In fact, almost all my uni female class mates are settled. But the guys, a lot of them are still struggling till date. Some still ask me for little, little help. It is that crazy.

The society gave women one or two steps ahead of the man in terms of finance. That brought about the previous culture. However as we are shifting from this, we expect Nigerian ladies to also shift from their numerous benefits in respect to finances else, the male child may die younger.

Lol. Even you yourself know the Igbo women are daily running away from their cursed region and marrying off the Yoruba men anywhere they find them. It may be either in the SW or abroad.

They are escaping the backward system of their Igbo culture and the toxic men for a more posh and refined Yorubas with superior culture.

In our land, the wife has every right to lay claim to her husband property as inheritance and no discrimination whatsoever.

Who will even marry you in the first place? Is it with your hairy chest and legs?

I have lost count of many Yoruba men that wanted to marry me and I said no to their marriage offer especially when I was serving in the west. I can never marry into that tribe, their women are cheap and they rarely stay in marriage, which is why they run after Igbo women to marry cause they know that Igbo women are well trained, you see them complaining about high brideprice yet they will still borrow money, run to the east to pay the brideprice. I will never marry a Yoruba man, none of my female cousins that base in the southwest did and I won't. Womanizers!!! Bye.

Lol. Ibo women are buy one get 2 free. I’ve lost count of how many Ibo women guys pass for free back home.

Ibo girls are symbol of prostitution everywhere they go. Whether in Porthacort, Abuja, Kano, or Ondo, they constitute the highest number of prostitutes in Nigeria (no contest).

Having a high bride price doesn’t imply worth, it just showed the greedy archaic culture that your ancestors bestowed you guys with. Do the Americans pay bride price? What’s there to be proud of about high bride price which is purely due to rubbish tradition of greedy ancestors.

Same thing applied to the inheritance issue which is the main discourse of this thread. That same barbaric culture gave rise to women not being able to lay claim to their husband inheritance simply because some old ancestors made some claim.

Again I repeat, any Yoruba man that want to marry a hairy chest and leg like you deserved to be flogged to coma!

The judgement And the reactions show the poor understanding of culture and society by the current Nigerian system including Igbos.

In Igbo tradition, there is a balance.

1. Native land is only inherited by male children. Emphasis on Native land. This is to continue the family name in the same of location of ancestry.

2. Daughters and sons can inherit any other things. Including land that was bought by their father not within the native land!

3. Daughters inherit all their mother’s belongings From gold to cars to clothing to houses owned by their mother outside the native land. The only inheritance that goes to a son from the mother is a house built by or for the mother In the native land and this goes to the last son only.

4. Daughters’ sons could be given native land to live in and inherit in a situation whereby they Have trouble in their father’s land.

5. Now, the concept of daughters not inheriting native land is that by marriage they sojourn to another family and it is expected that they build that family to growth; reason why most Igbo Women are industrious! Once she is married into a family, she is a apportioned farming land, built a house for (in the olden days of polygamy) and given resources for a trade. So her focus is to build that family and Co-own the sources of livelihood for that family.

6. There is an eternal inheritance given to daughters in such a way that they are highly entitled to anything they ask for in their father’s house except native land.

7. Now it all depends on how wealthy a father is. The standard Igbo man would Share native land amongst his sons, share money, other property and liquid assets among all children; typically giving more to his daughters.

In the event that a man dies before his will, and all he has is native land, that is where daughters lose. Otherwise, daughters receive more liquid assets than the sons. Only greedy people try to undermine this culture.

It’s only people who don’t understand the Igbo culture that are screaming here.

Igbo women have been in slavery since. Today they have found freedom.

As expected many igbo men disagree with the judgment because they now have to share with their sisters. The greed is too much.

Any igbo man who denies his sister her share of their father’s property will be dragged to court to vomit the yams. grin

Backwardness is not attractive abeg.

Next on the agenda is OSU caste system. That will take another 25 years but slowly they will have sense and abolish it themselves.
The Igbo traditional law was put in place because a lady/girl who is married will inherit her husband property/wealth not her father because Igbo's believe that what belongs to the husband also belongs to the wife so she have to focus her attention on her husband side inwhich her father will now focus his property on the male members of the family, in a situation where the female child did not get married by the Igbo tradition the female child that was unfortunate inwhich she was unable to find a husband or get married will be given a share of her father's property, well I don't see any thing wrong in this Igbo culture because everthing about this Igbo culture that I wrote which has to do with property sharing is all fairness that's all I see.
