Getting residency isn't as hard as you think. Nigerian trained doctors have been doing it for years, so your case shouldn't be different.

I like that you're planning out your future early. A little bit of advice: When you get into med school, try to get your hands on as many scholarships as you can. You can get as many as four awards if you know what you're doing...and that's a lot of money. I'm just telling you this so you can have an easy time in med school while saving up for the PLAB/UKMLA/USMLE exams. I know some people that paid for their exams this way.

hi sir,

How long after the step 1 uslme can one take the second step?...I mean what is the validity of the first step or can one take the first step in 2020 and take the second step two or three years after?
I'll be glad if this can be explain explicitly

I think step 1 and step 2ck are valid for about seven years or so.

i'm not sure, though . I'm sure a simple Google search will answer your question.

It is quite unfortunate that you are in Nigeria where our leaders are useless and things don't move forward. Many developed countries are already engaging their medical students in the fight against covid 19 let alone a graduate like you. Well, welcome to the reality in Nigeria.

Well,my advice to you is this. Those NCDC will hardly take you because we are in a country where you have to know someone to get a job. Besides they may want to put criteria like NYSC for one to apply( you see how backward your country is?)
Seek private hospitals that may engage your services. They may pay you peanut since you have not done housemanship. But better to earn little than nothing. Your location may aid this . Easier in places like Lagos.Just look for private hospitals and tell them you would like to get involved and bargain with them little stuff they can pay you. Don't do it for nothing because most of them will want to take advantage of you, telling you that you should learn first. What did they think you spent at least 6 years doing in medical school? Just thank them and leave if they won't give you small choppingson to cover your transport and pocket money.
More importantly, you need to start studying to leave this country. Get materials and read for foreign exams. You can plan to relocate to Saudi Arabia,Omar,Australia,UK,USA,Ireland,New Zealand , just anywhere provided it is not Nigeria.
There is nothing for you as a doctor in Nigeria.
Just my opinion anyway.

Pls can u list materials one can focus on to prepare for their exams
Thank you so much in advance

Hello Docs,

Please when is the best time to write USMLE Step 1? I've read online that it's based on preclinicals, so does that mean one will be able to take the exam while still in med school; i.e just after L300?

Also, I've read that to get a competitive residency in the US, it's best to do some elective rotations prior to graduation... is it really possible to leave the country for a month+ while your course is still ongoing?
Also, what are the chances of doing research while in med school?

Please I really need answers. Thanks in advance.

I did a little skimming through your posts and realized that you're yet to get admitted. I was also like that some years back.

As for your questions:
Yes, it's best to write USMLE immediately after pre-clinicals and that's 400 level.
About the elective rotations though, I'm not so sure about it but I think your housemanship service should cover this. About leaving, possibly for step 2 CK, I think that can be sorted out with your lecturers and shouldn't be much of an issue. As regards the issue of research, all students in Nigerian tertiary institutions must submit a project which must be defended before passing out if that applies as a research.

I have to add though that getting a residency into the US healthcare system is highly rigorous and sometimes isn't granted to international students despite passing the courses(but not being among the best) and all one must have spent on the process because Americans are first considered. I'm sure you're also aware of the price of this and is ready for it?

You can DM me(on WhatsApp) though. My number is in some of my posts because I'm also trying to emigrate.

That's cool chief... I'm also locking at Canada or Aussie if the US proves stubborn.
Let's talk more.

Good evening Everyone,I have some questions to ask.

Is it possible to go for a US elective while in a Nigerian Medical School?

If you have done it before from Nigeria or know someone who has please reply.

I want to know if it's possible to do, in this tight Nigerian Medical educational Setting.

Thanks as I look forward to your replies

Well, it depends on your school.
In my own school, there's a window period of a month or thereabouts btw MB3 and resumption for 600L where students are allowed to do electives anywhere .
I know about three guys who were in the USA 2yrs ago for this same purpose.

And I thought it is done only when you are in final year

It's still in final year, just before resumption.

It depends on your school.

So it means one has to pass his 3RD MB before ever applying for the electives.

Because your being in final year has to match with your College transcript

Moreover one month doesn't look sufficient to do the whole process of applying to different places then embassy stuff too.

Is it advisable for someone to defer his admission to another year, so as to chase it or should the person just disappear from class for months and later join the moving academic calender?

Please I need answers

It is actually after 3rd MB

And most schools in the US require your 1st USMLE score

From what I've seen so far it doesn't look as if, one month is sufficient to do the whole process of applying to different places then embassy stuff too. Some schools require IMGs to apply 2-6 months earlier.

To make it easier, look for US schools or hospitals that have IOUs with your school and start the process early maybe few weeks before beginning of your 6th year.

And believe me when I say that the process is very long and expensive but really worth it.
