Many Of Us Are Fools by ChildOfDoom: 2:23pm On Sep 01, 2020
Hurray! It's two months now (July and August) without engaging in the spell-binding bet9ja virtual. How I did it is unimaginable. If I will suffer a relapse and go back to the act, is unpredictable. For now, a step at a time. My target now is to painstakingly try to avoid bet9ja shops for at most, six months.

In my leisure time, I do retrospect on my unethical and punting lifestyle so far (since 2015), and how foolish I have been to go back to the future-wrecking act over and over again, despite the repercussions. Many of us, in these contemporary times take foolish steps out of lusts, addictions and persuasions.

I will let you in on mine first.......

Since I took to gambling, my life has moved from promising to pitiable. Why don't I see myself as a bad example and stop? Hmm. Old habits die hard I guess. My mates graduated in 2015. I didn't because I gambled with my school fees. The pain of watching my contemporaries graduating and being left out, should have made me give myself a constructive criticism. But no, I wouldn't. I turned bet9ja shop to my second home. Taking every money that came to me there to waste away. I disgust myself.

Only a fool will lose so much, sell all he had, dupe people etc just to give charitably to a computer screen that has been programmed to milk us of our money. Despite advice of letting go and facing the future, I still continued my miserable lifestyle in Warri after I fled Benin. Why can't the fear of going to jail or being tortured, dissuade me from duping people to gamble. At times, I would starve myself then or ignore aggravated declining health and improper hygiene, just to engage in the diabolic act I was 'possessed' with. I used to find joy sitting amongst low-lives and discussing our loss at bet9ja shops.

Five years of misfortune, yet something still draws me to hold the mouse at bet shops to try my luck. Maybe it's boredom, my love for football or just sheer mischief that keeps pushing me to the act. I am a fool. How do I explain losing 250,000 naira COVID-19 relief funds given to me by the government that I lost in one day (30 minutes sef). Hmm. I should have started life with that money.

Now school has partially resumed, I have to be a 'slave' to my employer till I pay up the WASSCE enrollment money I squandered for betting. So far, I have given 30k 'runs' money I saved, to him. Remaining 70k left.

It might seem harsh that I tagged many people along in my ordeal. But come to think of it, most of us in this age of materialism, are all guilty of one obstinate addiction or the other. Desperation, the western influence and recalcitrance has made most youths a mess. Despite stern warnings from parents and elders, we do not relent in our addiction. What do I call those of you in this web?

You drink to stupor every now and then, even when you know it damages your kidney gradually. At times in your drunken state, you do carefree and regrettable things. Yet you won't change.

You that womanize and neglect your family responsibilities. Or squandering money on women instead of planning for your future.

You that take hard drugs and can't do without it. You steal and dupe people to patronize drug barons. You also become aggressive to every one in the process.

You as a lady that sell your body to any one. Even married men, when you know it could get ugly when caught. Girls that fall blindly in love at a teenage age, neglecting studies and cohabiting with a man. Some carry out constant abortion that has health implications or steal to give to their lovers

You that masturbate so much that you hardly have an erection again. Yet you won't listen to advise of likely having erectile dysfunction if not regulating it. Or you that can't do without sugary things or junk food, despite risk of diabetics. (I also fall into the last two categories).

Other categories exist but i stop here. What do we call the aforementioned if not fools? We are unable to abstain from addictions in today's world of celebrating immorality. Only God can save us

You know what baffled me? You wrote correct and fantastic English. In short, you're a good writer. So, why not channel your writing skill to a profitable and worthwhile career.

Really? angry angry angry

yes bro. The process was very transparent. Kudos to the Federal Government. I applied in April, during the lockdown and the loans were given to us in June. It was disbursed by NIRSAL MICROFINANCE BANK on behalf of the Central Bank. I just pray I am not prosecuted when I am unable to pay back

registration is over now. Only those who applied in April were taken. Sorry. On a second thought, thank God I didn't apply for something bigger, like one million naira. I would have just wasted government's money like that.

The offer was too good to be true. I registered without putting seriousness in it. Surprisingly, we were all taken (about 80,000 people across the country). Without hammering on the collateral and guarantor, since it was the general lockdown period. I remember having a sleepless night when I got the alert at 4am. I couldn't wait till morning to plan life. I had big dreams my brother.

Now the money is all gone, my eyes are clear now. 'Money get spirit, I swear' sad

You should be forever separated from money. That’s the only way out of gambling for you

Trust me, it will work. Sebi na who see money dey gamble

Child of Doom, you can channel your writing skills and time into helping people overcome this addiction like you did, bro.

I remember an Online game addiction site that helped me stop my addiction to video games early last year. Suppose you will be willing to, you can DM me, so we work something out together.

I wish you the best in life, bro.

hmm. You are one out of many making this compliment. Thanks. But it's easier said than done. I am better off just writing on my misery, which no one will patronise. Writing an enticing book involves some intricacies

just ask around, it was for real. Really scared now, because the three months grace period (moratorium) is up, as from September 12th, I am expected to start paying back. I pray many people default in paying back, so they are unable to jail us

what I might say might sound harsh, but it's a fact. your 'foolishness' might not end till you reach a breaking point. if you have not lost much, sold much, stole a lot to gamble, have been beaten or jailed for it, disowned for gambling, suffered much, forget it. but if you have, hear me out . nothing moves me again. not money (lost over 4 million), not future plans (yet to graduate since 2015), no joy, no friends, no relationship, no religion, no target, no feelings, no joy etc. just me. I am learning to be okay with my fate. I see myself as condemned and about to be destroyed if I don't do something quick about my situation. so, when I go to betshops, I just focus on charging my phone and don't go there with money. have a target each day of not playing. have someone to share it with. like my case, the drive to share the good news monthly with this group, spurs me on. see food, clothes and shelter as the only priority now. see yourself as a good-for-nothing, that nothing can come out of. your world should revolve around only you for now. if you start setting target to make yourself and people proud, you will start gambling to succeed, since no good job out there. then you enter problems. greed has a way of wrecking people. most times, I joke with my mum to focus on other children to help her and leave me to reconstruct my life first till next year. finally, have a new passion. like me, I am always on my phone 24/7 having naughty chats, updating groups and watching porn. my work also helps. I do many home lessons to keep me busy till evenings, by which time betshops would have closed. not saying I have changed, but taking things one step at a time without desperation. my addiction would have killed me you know, so grateful for life
