Hello everyone, to the Gurus in the house I want to apply for my study permit and I need help on what to do.

I’m half Nigerian and half Ivorian (Ivory coast ) and i’m Applying with my Nigerian passport because I did my tertiary education here in Nigeria. Note that My primary and secondary school education were all done in Ivory Coast.
I currently live alone in Nigeria and none of my family members is here with me.

How do I show home ties to Nigeria in my application? I have no job here and I just completed my nysc.

Hello Sisikemi23,

Who is your sponsor and what proof of valid residence status in Nigeria are you showing?

In all honesty, it will be very difficult. Even those with valid jobs, family ties, investments, landed properties in Nigeria are still been delayed for HT. You can either work towards meeting one of these requirements.

Bet yet, apply from the country you think your ties is stronger.

Thanks for your response. A study permit application has been submitted already and a request for biometrics letter sent. What I want to know is if I can still hold off on going for the biometrics till I get a medical request so I can do the 2 at d same time
Akannitommy:
I am a Winter 2021 applicant too. I did medicals upfront (before submitting my application) and also booked bio-metric appointment before I got the request. Although I am based in Lagos, I have had some Gurus here guide me of course and they still do. Thanks @ honorable Frankrobbn1 and Oga Fratermathy. I hail you both!

So if you are not based in Lagos/Abuja but have a friend/relative there who can accommodate you for 1 week, here is my suggestion:
Book biometric appointment NOW. You probably won't get any date earlier than October at this rate and time.
Then start a myCIC profile and get all application materials ready (scanned, sized etc).
Book your medicals in advance to come up a week before your biometric appointment.
Travel to either city to do medicals hoping there is no follow-up tests/investigations.
Use e-statement for proof of funds so you can get the pdf wherever you are submitting from.
Submit SP application while you are still in the city after panel physician confirm your medical exam has been submitted to IRCC (2/3 days).
You should get a biometric request letter same or next day and you will be able to complete that before you return to base since you had an appointment in advance (remember?).

Caveat: there are a lot of assumptions that went into the above proposition, so ensure you do your own research to be sure these can work for you.

Thanks for responding. I would have loved to apply for 2yr PGD but the problem is POF.
Please if I do 1 yr PDG, and I want to do another 1year before applying for PGWP, Can I apply for another course in PGD or different course.

I want to plan my steps now

Hello Vslayer,

The same POF that will be shown for a 1year program is the same for two. What is required for the subsequent year's study is a demonstration of the POF and how it would be readily available. If you decide to opt for a year's program, you can always go for a second prior to the completion of the first.

Hello gurus in the house. I’m new here but I’ve taken time to read through the thread to get informed on helpful tips. But I need some personal enlightenment.

I got PhD admission and departmental scholarship of $21,000 CAD to be paid @1,750 CAD per month (1750 * 12 = 21k) at University of Saskatchewan starting May, 2021 semester. Tuition= CAD 7000.

I would like to know if without providing a proof of tuition fee payment it will be safe to proceed with study permit application. I currently do not have 7k CAD to settle the tuition, but will like to hear your suggestions.

Looking forward to your informed responses. Thanks.

With the exception of full tuition waivers, all fully funded PhD students are expected to pay tuition from their funding. The calculation of $1750 pm doesn't apply to you. Remove your tuition of $7000 from the funding and calculate the rest as your living expenses. This would amount to $14,000. That amount is still within the expected range.

As for actually paying your tuition, most schools have the option of "deferring tuition" for award recipients. It works seamlessly and you'll be able to pay once the money is lodged in your student account by the department.

For study permit application, simply attach your proof of funding and your personal statement of account (don't worry too much if you don't have a lot of money in it). You'll be just fine.

The statement is self-serving. Self-serving means having concern for oneself than others. Did she explain how her family will survive without her or Improve them?

Hello Osemigho,

I don't think its self-serving reason been that their family situation (financially and composition) is adequately placed. Its just unfortunate that the VO applied such rigid discretion.

Majority of cases like @daadlade1 settle out of court while another immigration officer will then be handed over the application to review and make a final decision. Above all, this most often ends as an approval.

The citizenship of your kids wasn't in any the reason for your denial. Its strongly necessary to include their birth certicates in your subsequent application. First thing, request for your notes if you've not done so, in order to be properly guided.

Hello, I´m not sure how it was in the past but my profile has a slot for proof of means of financial support. There is nothing like applicant sponsor´s document on my profile.

In addition to the responses you got, I´d like to add that you should believe in yourself and push yourself. You will be surprised what you will achieve. I have seen students with a lesser GPA get full or partial scholarships. Aim for thesis based programs if you can. You would need to reach out to supervisors before applying (for most thesis-based programs) Therefore, you need to work on your writing/communication skills. Use google to learn how to reach out to supervisors, there are many samples and tips. You might be lucky to find a supervisor willing to fund you. Finally, do a lot of research, look at all the Unis possible and funding available. Good luck

From my research, Memorial University and Sask are two of the cheapest there.I've calculated their tuition too but I just want more light from experienced people. Will 5m be enough for schooling and living for a year? And if not, how much should I plan on?

Hello Osemigho,

It depends on how long in the past you're referring to. The column(s) has always been so as way back as 2010 except I am also missing something.

I know you maybe adept to this but I will just state it anyway just for any referencing. The sponsor's POF should be merged with that of PA, same with other supporting documents in the Client Information column.

Hello house,
please how do I fill expected duration of study on the imm1294 form? I saw online that it should be expected length of program + 90 days. Is this accurate please?

Is it compulsory to fill the imm5257B form? it is showing as an optional form on my application portal.

I received some funding (research assistanship) it was stated in briefly (2 lines on my admission letter) Is this proof enough for the VO? I asked the student advisor for a separte letter about the funding but she said i can use my admission letter. Is this correct please?

Thanks house.

That's enough as long as the amount and duration are clearly stated.

And yes, I'll advise you to fill the so-called "optional form".

Hi jbreezy, just to add to the positive responses u have received,
I was in your place sometime in February last year. I was a first class graduate in NYSC then with zero information about scholarships and immigration. Today, I have a fully funded MSc scholarship at University of British Columbia.
I didn't spend a dime.

What other stages can I expect and are next in line towards getting the study permit as the application progresses along the chain. How long could the process take?

The visa officer is reviewing your ELIGIBILITY for study permit as well as the CBSA are currently running a background check on your file in order to ascertain that you won't be a threat to the citizens of Canada and her residents should your visa is granted by way of sharing information with other countries and scrutinizing your criminal records etc. Background checks is the time consuming stage of an immigration application to Canada, whilst Review of ELIGIBILITY can be completed in a matter of hours, days or weeks. In all, no one can tell how long your application process would take at the Nairobi Visa Office. At this present time, you should keep faith and exercise a good sense of optimism until the final decision is communicated to you. Again, you may request for your GCMS notes if your application is 10 weeks and above so as to obtain a clearer insight on the current status of your application.

Thank you for the response. I appreciate. Any idea about the duration of study please? Should it be length of program + 90 days?

You can't determine the length of your study permit. Simply input the start and end dates for your program. IRCC will determine how long your permit would last. Study permits can always be extended from inside Canada so you shouldn't worry about that.

And I am considering school toward the Atlantic Canada territory and I lost my dad this year, could it affect my prof of sponsorship or visa application ?

Please be advised that the minimum requirement for a master's admission in Canada is 2.1. If you had this grade during your undergraduate studies, a masters in public health would be your best bet in securing a study permit. You may seek admission in the below shortlisted schools.

1. University of Saskatchewan
2. Brock University
3. University of Western Ontario etc.

I wish you the very best on your application.

Hi all. On the issue of this new 2 stage application process, for a 2021 January applicant, can the applicant wait until the first stage is approved & medical requested before doing biometrics? In order words, would the application still be in progress without supplying the biometrics initially coz the applicant wants to book for both medicals & biometrics together in a single trip.

The applicant in question should book for an appointment and enrol for your biometrics as early as possible. He mustn't wait until medicals is requested before going to the VAC to submit his fingerprints (biometrics).

Hello my people, I read earlier in the thread, about not using agent as much as possible for one's application. For me this is my first time and there are so much to know and note in the application process.

For instance, I have been on the search on getting an acceptance letter from Canadian DLI in Saskatchewan or Manitoba, which I have not gotten an headway. I studied Mech Engineering, and I am in search for a 2 years engineering related course or diploma in a Canadian DLI. How do I start up please? Your kind suggestions will be appreciated.

I also want to suggest that we possibly open a WhatsApp group page for more instant messaging. Thanks. Sorry, I am new here

A bonafide student with a B.Eng qualification in Mechanical Engineering should go for a degree that is higher than his already completed degree which is a Master's degree or PGD depending on your undergraduate GPA. Please be properly guided that a two year ordinary diploma will dramatically decrease your chances of convincing a Visa officer that you're indeed a genuine applicant who will leave Canada after studies. In restropect to your suggestion about creating a WhatsApp group while this thread is continuously serving its purpose is totally not acceptable as this platform has been in existence for more than a decade and has tremendously changed a lot of students lives in a very positive way. As a consequence, you can always feel free to ask your questions here and it will be attended to by some of the knowlegable group members.

Congratulations on your upcoming nysc graduation. It is advisable to pursue a course related to your bsc, a masters or PGD in public health is fine. Doing a second degree in nursing is not a good idea, why? How do u defend the gap from after your waec and now. Also canada dont offer nursing to international students, rather pre-nursing but you must meet up with the credit requirements before you can proceed to nursing. The Atlantic province is awesome abs beautiful.

Sorry about your loss but I can tell you authoritatively, his loss won't affect your application. Your mum or elder siblings can stand in as your sponsor.

Thanks for your replies guys i’m really grateful.

@JustMellow I think I don’t have to show any proof of valid residence status here because i’m Half Nigerian.

My sponsor is an uncle that has been sponsoring my education for years. I also got a partial scholarship from the school i applied to.

I have a landed property here in my name but do I need to value the property or just present its documents?
