there are too many senseless people in Nigeria, you prefer to import food from abroad and help other countries to employ their citizens in farms while you are unemployed and your land that can grow food is idle.
Thank you. It is like most of the commenters on Nairaland are dunce. Imagine them criticizing the president for a policy that would benefit the country. Nigeria has arguably one of the most fertile land on planet earth. These goats want us to import what we can grow with our scarces forex when most of our youths are unemployed? Rubbish. what this policy is saying is that if you are a farmer, There's no way you will not sell your produce when you harvest.

How can you stop the importation of what you don't produce enough.

The name, buhari, is synonymous with poverty, disease, hunger, gnashing of teeth, death etc..

A repeat of 1985 is playing out in 2020.

Great! APC members and supporters should ensure they go to the market with their membership card; prices would be discounted for them on that basis.

Excellent point. However, don't you think this policy will kick start and necessitate the rush to manufacturing? Most especially with our mega corruption? I live in the USA, i send things home, whenever i go to send things home, the place is full of Nigerians buying tin tomatoes, rice from Sams club etc to send to Nigeria. Now based on Naira vs $$ exchange rate, that has drastically reduced and almost stopped. Even me that charter used clothes and send as gifts, its not viable anymore, its better sending the money. Also, i now hear of Lake rice,(LAgos and KEbbi) Ebonyi rice, Awka rice etc. Many rice production in Nigeria now. What do you think of all that?

Rubbish. what this policy is saying is that if you are a farmer, There's no way you will not sell your produce when you harvest.

Do you have a farm? Do you know the problem of farmers?
This would have been a good policy if the first things were done. What are those things?
1. Keep herdsmen in ranches. Do you know the amount of crops and lives of farmers that have been lost to herdsmen? I know some farmers who have quit farming because they can't continue to risk their lives and suffering loses going to farm. The number of Farmers are reducing instead of increasing
2. Support large scale mechanized farming. Majority of farming in Nigeria is still at the subsistence level. We need an agricultural policy and road map that turns agriculture into an enterprise covering the entire value chain
3. Ensure the country is self sufficient on food production. Right now, Nigeria is not self sufficient in food production as a result of the first 2 above.

What will this policy do?
Most food importers will no longer import. Since Nigeria is not yet self sufficient Food prices will skyrocket. Why? Demand will outstrip supply.

The govt is betting on people being forced to farm. However, you can't force people to go into farming when it is dangerous out there. The simplest thing the govt would have done is to ban herdsmen from roaming around and make farmers feel safe. They are not willing to do that due to their own selfish agenda and they think they can force farmers to farm. In fact the govt is not serious at all. At the end, the poor suffers.

After killing thousands of farmers & burning their harvests, forcing over 2million survivors (mostly farmers )into IDP camps.
60% of Nigerian farmers re out of business.
The rest farmers are afraid.
You go to farm u get killed , the lucky ones get kidnapped & released after a ransome.

With food scarcity everywhere, they now want to block food imports.hahahahaha.

Very soon the whole country will turn to a huge refugee camp.

Your types are those who think food production must remain at the subsistence levels forever, plus herding cattle into bushes everywhere, so so old.

We are the set of people who knows that farming rice in large scale, animal husbandry in big scale, tomato and fresh food farming must be mechanized, that's why we demand for power before any bans on imports.

Ban on imports without an enabling environment to farm is licenced starvation.

DON’T GIVE A KOBO FOR FOOD, FERTILIZER IMPORTS, PRESIDENT BUHARI DIRECTS CBN

As the Federal Government rolls out the Economic Sustainability Plan and sets goal for National Food Security, President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria ''not to issue a kobo'' of the country’s reserves for the importation of food items and fertilizer.

At a meeting of the National Food Security Council at the State House, Abuja, President Buhari restated his earlier verbal directive to the apex bank, saying he will pass it down in writing that ''nobody importing food should be given money.''

Emphasizing the need to boost local agriculture, the President said:

''From only three operating in the country, we have 33 fertilizer blending plants now working. We will not pay a kobo of our foreign reserves to import fertilizer. We will empower local producers.''

Furthermore, President Buhari also directed that blenders of fertilizer should convey products directly to State governments so as to skip the cartel of transporters undermining the efforts to successfully deliver the products to users at reasonable costs.

The President advised private businesses bent on food importation to source their foreign exchange independently, saying ''use your money to compete with our farmers'', instead of using foreign reserves to bring in compromised food items to divest the efforts of our farmers.

''We have a lot of able-bodied young people willing to work and agriculture is the answer. We have a lot to do to support our farmers,'' President Buhari said.

The meeting, chaired by the President with other key members of the Council in attendance, was briefed on the food security situation prevailing in the country.

Notably, the Vice Chairman of the council and Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari and a Governor from each of the six geo-political zones – Jigawa, Plateau, Taraba, Ebonyi, Lagos and Kebbi, made presentations.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Dr Zainab Ahmed, outlined measures introduced by the administration to tackle the unprecedented challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic on the nation as contained in the Nigerian Economic Sustainability Plan (NESP).

Among others, the Minister highlighted that the government will facilitate the cultivation of 20,000 to 100,000 hectares of new farmland in every State and support off-take of agro-processing to create millions of direct and indirect job opportunities.

She also listed the creation of 774,000 direct jobs for a minimum of 1,000 young Nigerians in each local government, the construction of 300,000 homes every year to give a boost to jobs through the construction industry, as well as the connection of 25 million new users of electricity with the installation of Solar Home System (SHS) targeting 5 million households.

Dr Ahmed also briefed on the joint investment with the World Bank to provide intervention fund to States to improve health infrastructure.

She said to ease existing financial hardships among the people, the government is also coming up with low-interest loans for mechanics, tailors, artisans, petty traders and other informal business operators.

The Minister added that the Federal Government will equally provide support to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to help them keep their employees and boost local manufacturing.

Dr Ahmed explained that from the recently approved N2.3 trillion stimulus recommended by the NESP, there will be expansion of broadband connectivity to boost job opportunities in the digital economy, a planned expansion of the National Social Investment Programmes including increase in the number of beneficiaries such as the cash transfer beneficiaries, N-Power Volunteers, the Market Moni and Trader Moni schemes.

In his presentation, the Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Sabo Nanono told the Council that the nation expects a bumper harvest of food items despite floods in the north and drought in the south.

He quoted the latest market surveys to show that the recent hike in the price of commodities is being reversed.

On his part, Mr Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, reported the negative impact of the pandemic on the lives and livelihood of citizens, while the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col Hameed Ali (Rtd) expressed the hope of an early reopening of the partially closed borders given the progress made with neighbouring States in joint border patrols - one of the key conditions by Nigeria for reopening of the borders.

nigeria economy is not base on export, but on import, b it oil, raw material that are imported by company in nigeria. i think farmers need fertilizer 2 speed up their agriculture products. that is where d cabals wrongly advice buhari 2 tell CBN not 2 support d importation of fertilizer. nigeria at d moment is not able 2 produce enough goods locally 4 people, & has not reach d level of exporting goods 2 an international standard

@Dr Goodman, Excellent points. However, learn to walk first before trying to run. We cannot be talking mechanized farming at this point. We don't have the enabling environments, infrastructure, preservation, logistics, skilled manpower etc to support it. Ban importation, that will support local production and drive up the cost of food production, that will in turn drive more people into Agriculture like it's currently happening, (i have three classmates that are big time farmers and employers of labor as well). Just like Sanusi said, you want to have overhead bridges in Kano, for what? for farmers to take their produce from the farm to the city? We do not need to copy America, UK, etc, and start large scale mechanized farming which has lots of disadvantages like overproduction, genetically assisted growing, obesity, etc. Dont get me wrong, i am not saying go to farm with hoe and cutlass or have the continuation of Transhumance, Nope, but again, not large scale mechanized farming. I am talking about taking the middle lane because that is where we are realistically speaking.
