Underemployment is another serious issue.
I have a PhD in Economics, but I work as a marketer in a commercial Bank where your certificate really don't mean anything.
Hopefully by first quarter of next year, I will resign and look for something else to do. The banking system just dulls one.

The issue is, most graduates including the PhD holders are not creating jobs by solving problems. They just want to go to school, pass exams and 'look' for jobs.

Nigerian graduates should think of what they can do for Nigeria or humanity and not what Nigeria/humanity can do for them.

Going to school is solving the illiteracy problems in Nigeria.

Instead of students to come out to protest their future, they are busy forming sendless, hoeing &, scaming. When they join the unemployed market after graduation, their eyes will be open and they will litter nairaland with account numbers.
BTW if you believe just 20 million graduates are unemployed, then you can believe a dog poo taste like ice cream.

Wahala dey o, I remember how some of my lecturers advice me to put in for Masters immediately after NYSC, there reason is that i could secure lecturing job, then afterwards enrol for Ph.d. My worry was that, I've not put my undergraduate knowledge into use, but to them, it's about getting the JOB.
This is the mentality of most lecturers doning our citadel of learning, it also explain why graduates are often running after getting job.

Not only the lecturers are giving this type of advice but everyone including family and friends. I remember how I was pressured to go for master when the first degree was there being useless. I stood my ground. Thank God I made the right decision, that's what will guide my children too in the future.

What tha fúck has nigeria done for its people that it expects them to reciprocate? If the arabs, Europeans and Americans say this one can understand but not Nigeria. Do you know that schooling in ARABIA basically free for its people to any level(even PHD). What about European and western govt that pay their citizens for every child that they bear. Pls don't say this again its an insult to hardworking nigerians.

Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria are scams, what you've bn taught up to waec standard is enough to sustain many.

And the worst part of it is when you decide to work digitally on your own online. You are automatically tagged as "yahoo-boy"

Do you agree?

You are describing what I'm experiencing bro. You will be surprised that even those who are supposed to know better are too mentally poor and blind to know that people can make money without going to an office or opening a shop. As far as these mentally blind people are concerned, anyone using a laptop or working from home is a scammer.

undecided undecided well, the NBS stats shouldn't come as a surprise. Its unfortunate the kind of situation we have found ourselves in this country. With a first class degree, I still can't get a job. In fact, I hustle on the streets like a dropout. The question begging for answers remains : #wнo нaѕ done тнιѕ тo υѕ ιn тнιѕ coυnтry?#

I had a taste of this for two years after graduating 8 years ago.

Words can't describe how frustrated I felt, I even lost a very meaningful relationship when the 'owu' became too much. I would kneel down to pray every midnight. "In Jesus' name" were all I could utter most times, before hot tears begin to flow.

Until God made me meet one big chief like that in my state when I was doing all sorta hustles to keep body and soul together. A phone call and two weeks were all he needed to fix me somewhere outside my state.

It hurts and scares me what people suffer, with all the qualifications. It's a very cold world out there.
May that same 'In Jesus name' send me help too. I'm frustrated already cry cry

A PhD holder should be able to find solution to a problem, but in Nigeria, it's like an academic exercise.
You cannot get solution to a problem that affects mankind and still be searching for job, it's impossible.
But...is it really as easy as you've said?

You will be looking at unemployment figures and be seeing millions, but na millions of people oo.
Imagine having as much jobless people enough to make a midsized country grin
Guy this is not funny. What is the population of New Zealand, its just about or around 6m. Unemployed figure in Nigeria is higher than that. Israel at less than 10m, is still less than unemployment figure here. Meanwhile those are advanced nations not to talk of countries in Europe. We have an army of unemployed capable of dwarfing the population of a number of countries around the world.
While it might be an asset to the polity it is at the same time a time-bomb. Have you asked yourself what if things don't change for the better going forward, what will give? That is a million-dollar question laden with anxious expectations! Pathetic really embarassed
