My Mama once use it to make stew some years back, though she cried that very day, because the stew was smelling, so we insulted her for using it.

Don't blame the landlord

If you have a building close to a neighbour, like you are staying in a floor, then another person is staying close to you,(like three or more families occupying same floor) you don't cook with such ingredients, because the smell will go to the next apartment immediately they open their doors or windows. Definitely they will report you.

Not all apartment though.

How is that possible?

Ghana and other West African ccountries throw in their habenero inside soup without grinding. Looks weird to us but normal to them. They also add tomatoes.
