It depends on individual cities and their foreign offices.
Some are fast while others can be pretty slow.
I have seen some that were done between 2 - 5 weeks. Again, it depends.

It doesn't have a fixed duration, your sponsor can get it same day he went/had appointment with ausländerbehöde. But now it's on appointment.
Before the pandemic people can walk in and get it immediately but not so anymore.

I feel like there are more people getting AD and are not coming here to give updates. Even those that got Visa in Cat A and have done their interview since but refused to give others here an update on their visa. Hello everyone, please I recently filled the online form to register for students visa under the B list and my program commences on the 5th October, 2020 though I have opted to take the online classes I am worried that the mail I received after filling the form says thus:
“ Approximately 4 to 6 weeks prior to your appointment to apply for a visa you will receive a e-mail with the exact date of your appointment.

If you don't receive an appointment confirmation email prior to your mentioned date of the beginning of your studies your registration can no longer be considered. In this case please cancel your registration. Thank you!”

Hello there, in your Email, check under "Promotions". I found mine there, yours might be there too. For some reasons, Gmail thought it's a promotional email so they didn't place it under my "Primary".

Also, you might have to trace it down to the day you applied for the health insurance or the day after. Hopefully it'd be there.

Normally, what you quoted means exactly what it means:
If you don't get an AD by the time your programme commences, then your application is no longer considered. In fact, by 30th September all registrations for appointment are reset.

You should also be aware that majority are in the same situation. Hiwever, given the peculiarities of this year, we don't know if things we be done differently. Everyone is simply waiting and hoping. There is no communication from the embassy.

I'd advice you wait till the end of this month to see if your registration is automatically cancelled. (In this case, you will get a notification, I beleive). Then you will know the next steps to consider.
