Mine: I was very happy to be in tertiary school. I ironed my clothes and groomed myself very well.

Of course, we carried big bags of books to school. How naive! That was how we recognized freshers after that.

I remember waiting for the lecturer in the auditorium for GNS 101 and when he came sb tapped and said “pa pa pa pa pa, class greet” and the whole misguided flock responded ‘good morning sir' in unison.

Favorite Lecture hall moment

There are few teachers who have touched us in numerous ways.

Dr O.N Oguoma while teaching us a course on factors affecting location of an industry asked one of us to list three factors he would consider before he would get married to a woman. He listed

(1) beauty( 2) Intelligence (3) character.

Then he asked him to allocate points to each factor in descending order of importance. His response was

(1)Character: 3 points (2) Intelligence: 2(3) beauty : 1

Then Prof asked two ladies of opposite features . He asked the guy to score each girls according to his perceived performance in each factor . His response was similar to this

Girl A : Intelligence :8 . Character: 7 . Beauty :5

Girl B Intelligence:5 character : 9. Beauty :3.

Next, each score was multiplied by the rating and the sum for each girl was taken. The girl with the highest score wins.

It has been over seven years since I attended this class but I still recall it like it was yesterday. Youth are so obsessed with relationship issues . He used our interest to teach us. One can apply the same method in making life decision. For instance, while applying for masters degree program, choosing between two jobs, choosing between various investment plans, residential areas etc .

As a teacher, I often use soccer to explain certain phenomenon to my students. It has been over seven years ago since I received this teaching. Prof must have retired by now. we may never cross paths in life but his teaching method remains forever in my heart.

My first lecture was GNS 111

I won 1000#

The lecturer ( Mr Otekwu) challenged us to spell 'Patois' (pronounced Patwa) he was going to give the speller 500#
but the whole class went dumb.

I think most of us (freshers) were shy

But I did spell it and another word....

Mine was quite hilarious grin, I had always despise calculations so much since my secondary school days which made me to opt for the course I studied (not knowing the course also deals with calculations in a quite elaborious manner grin).

Got to my department for the first time, went to our secretary office and introduced myself as a new student, he welcomed me and told me to go and copy the time table at the notice board outside.
Got to the notice board, not knowing how course codes work, I copied everything from first year to almost final year till a student in his penultimate class (he later u became the departmental president) saw me and asked me if I am a new student, I answered in affirmative, he directed me to a class that my mates are already having a lecture, I was tensed and didn't know how to proceed.

Mustered courage and excused myself into the class, lo and behold, my first lecture was Statistics (another calculations). In my mind, I was like I don fail be this ooo! the whole process was just like an exorcism session. I was just there staring at the board looking at how the lecturer was just doing her stuff. Before she ended her lecture, she looked at us, seeing that the whole process looks confusing to us, she made herself open to us, telling us to feel relaxed, admonished us and told us to always approach her when we find any challenges.

Immediately after the lecture, I went to her, instead of telling her my fear, I told her that I am stranded grin, because I was petrified (stranded maybe in calculation xanadu). She looked at me coded my message, talked to me like a friend and told me that I shouldn't be scared that I will make it well.

After that semester results came out and lo and behold, your boy made an A in that course, thanks to that lecturer and a special thanks to my best friend (Wisdom), who made the whole calculation process look and feel so easy, and made me fall in love with calculation.

On the other hand, the course that I was expecting and enphantic A in, failed me woefully. It was like a mirage how I failed that course but the good thing is that when I went for its resit, I didn't just make an A but also made the best result in the sequential course of that same course. grin grin cheesy

On my first day we had GST101 at about 8AM. I woke up around 4AM, prepared and got to school 6AM.

I initially thought I would be the first to get there but I was surprised by the numbers of students that were already seated. After taking my seat a certain man from the street whom everyone of us thought was a lecturer, came to sell his books titled "English and Englishes." grin

After successfully convincing us that one could be sent out of the university for not passing English, everybody in the hall bought the book with fear. grin
I bought the book with the last card I had on my wallet thinking it was my textbook for the semester. Little did I know that the man is well known for scamming freshers. He smiled cheerfully, counted and made away with thousands of naira under the watchful eyes of everyone in the hall. shocked

The useless book was less than 15 pages containing trash upon trash. I had to throw it in the nearest trash can. angry

The hall is large and the crowd was much, I had to sit at the podium with other students coming closer to join. No mic, the temperature can melt ice or incubate eggs. It was very tiring and disappointing.

I came all smelling roses, aiming for the top, as a go getter, I became more popular and liberal to the extent, I was given the course rep during my year one, things were going as anticipated until I saw my year one result, I swear the thing humble me no be small grin

Well I won't blame myself, coming from a poor home with you to fend for yourself and little or nothing to fall back on truly got into my nerves and wreaked havoc.

Las Las man go dey alright by His grace, now in 3 hundred lv though, still pushing...

Was another lever of learning for me as I saw lot's of different faces both old and young, beautiful and ugly, shaped and unshaped.

Thus, everyone was serious as if they all knew and understand what the lecturer was teaching, meanwhile there were lots of block heads amongst us lol!!

As a warri boy wey i be i just compot and soji myself make person nor go mis yan with me, make i nor go wear person slap, 2 seconds i just see one fine smally just enter my sit Sidon near me, the warri in me vanish, Romeo and Shakespear enter my body immediately, we chatted for a little while before the weak lecturer enter the hall, I collected her control later, the rest is history.

Hmmm
It is FSC104 Mathematics Class

The lecturers started with "We are the Alpha and Omega here, A is for God, B is Me, C is for nobody, D for the most brilliant, the rest follow suit.
A lot of people have not graduated because of this course. If you do anyhow, we will hold you down. By the way...hand out will be dished out after each class at N400 per each.. *everyone one shouts*

To cut story short..how i got C in FSC 104 still baffles me till date

Sparogatively, my first day in the university I was just pissed!

"Is this what they call a University?"
"Blocks of glorified nonsense!"

Many of this Nigerian 'prestigious' Universities are living on past glories. Almost everything is substandard! Unconducive lecture halls meant for 300 students is forcefully made to accommodate 1300 students without adequate sound system to support.

Anyways, I didn't come to look at buildings and learning facilities, so I faced what I came for (to learn) and made my really good grades!

Hallelujah! I'm a super Lion!

It was Phy 111(Mechanics). That was the first time i sat on floor to receive lesson A hall tha was meant to accommodate max 350 students was struggling to sit about 800. Las las, i realised that going to those crowdy lectures was mostly counter productive. I used to sleep jejely in the hostel, then catch up with the notes later.
