What pained me the most was that I was even advising everyone around me and telling them of the imminent naira depreciation But I still kept forming "Mr Balanced portfolio" - 60% in dollars and 40% in Naira.

See where my 40% naira portfolio has carried me enter now...sighs...Again, lessons learnt sha.

I enjoyed good appreciation from the 60% kept in dollars but there is still always this nagging feeling that "Why in the world did i leave a whole 40% in Naira?"

DexterousOne:

Wow!

Now that you mentioned it

This is another lost opportunity I kind of regret as well.
I knew this devaluation was imminent

But I did not act on time to hedge enough
But like I said
We thank God that at least we survived the year

And look forward to better things going forward in future..

This ratio of yours seems more plausible
But commitments will not allow me undecided

60% USD is good if your circumstance can allow it

Are you saying Zenith went below #11 sometime this year?

Waow...I just bought some small units at NGN20.20k this last week.

DexterousOne:

The investment mistake I made

Or will I say the investment opportunity I missed

Was to sit on the sidelines when the carnage of March /April was in full swing

Taking some reasonable positions in Nestle, (<N800)
Zenith (<N11) and even Wapco and a few others I had in my radar then would, by now have paid off big!

While I remained on the sidelines hesitant
The brave ones took their positions
And are reaping bountiful from it.

This is not to say that there were no gains
But indecisiveness made me lose out on a big opportunity
AGAIN!
The lessons learnt from this, is that

1)dont have the "end of the world mentality, it won't l. No matter the gloom or panic, it will pass over
Which leads to the second

2) A fundamental company shares will always survive the storm, regardless of what happens. As long as the company has not had structural blows to the chin, even if the share price is going down, if you are liquid, buy more, and more.

Looking back in hindsight
I'm glad I'm among the living who survived the pandemic

Not so happy about the lost opportunities

But the lessons learnt are tattooed to my heart.

That's about it...

I'll tell you something you may not believe
But its true

I know a kinsman from my village (I'll call him my uncle, because in igbo custom, your kinsman that senior you is your uncle, even tho the blood ties are not direct)

This man is a successful business man and trader
Annual turnover is in hundreds of millions

But he has no foreign account anywhere
In fact
After Svannah Bank fiasco

He had to be cajoled years later into opening accounts

Why am I telling you this?.
Sometimes
Things are not as you think they might be

Some people may have tens of millions
And have no foreign account
Or even $50 in their pocket

While others may just be N5m up
And have a foreign account in Cabo....

Things are not always as they seem.
He doesn’t know that...and doesn’t want to know.

Onitsha traders will disagree with you

For some of them
Their only connection to foreign currency

Is the letter of credit Access bank or Zenith bank submits to their suppliers partner bank in china or vietnam or turkey (for those who deal in curtains and textile)

That is about it.

For some who own dorm accounts here
Its primarily for hedging and some capital preservation
Nothing more.....

So, while it may be convenient to own a foreign account if you are always on the move

It's not imperative that you MUST OWN ONE
Abi do some of these northern multimillionaire farmers in Bauchi state know what dorm account is? Talk less of foreign account?
This guy Na theory guy, I bet he has never travelled before. So he read it somewhere that you just have an international debit or credit card before you can survive outside the country. grin grin grin

thank you very much...i have done it ....

Waiting patiently to see more of bearish prices to add more to portfolio. I bought when it was 15, 16, 18 and 21 respectively.

You can sell at a profit of over 40% in less than 6 months, or continue to enjoy a dividend of N2.80k at a yield of 21% per annum.

I loaded at N15/N16

Like serious loading

And UBA at 6.15

Yes indeed it was below N11 this year.
And UBA was like sub 5

Imagine the ROI we would have been sitting on if we picked at those prices

That said
There is still room for Zenith to go further up...
So do not despair

There are more regulations in place

Maybe next year

But except something terrible happens this year
Like trump losing and refusing to leave, hence causing a civil war, I'm not sure we will have that kind "bonanza" again

I may be wrong sha
But be on the lookout

Bought at N10.90 around the COVID period too. I used it in averaging down. Only regret was that I didn't load as much as I should.

Why? Because some criminal minded individuals are trying so hard to trigger people to reveal their true identity? In this high era of insecurity?

Am telling you...before you mention your company, house address, your real name and other details you won’t know...especially if you are not the introvert type. grin grin grin

Make una dey use una brains abeg. Nairaland is full of audio billionaires living their dream lives on the internet. Claiming to have 50 trucks and billions in the bank generated from all types of risky real sector investments. Meanwhile in reality, they are just small time hustlers just managing and trying to survive the harsh Naija recession.

Na so innocent newbie go follow them and lose all their life savings. People should please wise up!!!

Some posts suggest that all is not well "up there" - I simply pray for the writers of such, as I see their use of language as a deep cry for help. May God show mercy and restore them.

Thanks to all those who have been making very productive contributions here. Many of us read, take action and appreciate you, even if we don't comment. God bless you!

@geegee08 Same goes here too! Thank you for your word of encouragement to our wonderful contributors, may you excel in all you lay your hands on ijmn. Who know how to think knows how to thank.
