This is the reason why people are crying foul over the complete northernization of the top echelon of the Nigerian security architecture. How can a general suggest the killing of his people over a peaceful protest? If the protests were going on in his village, would he recommend bringing in the army to start shooting his own clansmen?

The SARS cum Police brutality, which had been going on for over a decade, is a problem mainly in the southern part of the country. The police knows that southern youths are hardworking, enlightened and more prosperous, so they become the target of kidnappings, extortion, brutality and outright murder by the same Police. But, Northern youths who are mainly poor, uneducated and religious extremist, are never targeted. So an order to deploy Police to quell ENDSARS protests, would only lead to a one sided genocide against southern youths by a northern led security apparatus. That would be a recipe for a civil war, because I doubt governors (who support the protest anyway) and senior southern military officials would sit down and watch their youths being mowed down.

I am glad that Buhari is smart enough to reject such callous suggestion, but I think it's time he starts thinking of reorganisation of the security architecture of the country to make it more ethically homogeneous.
