WWE Smackdown reviews recaps and reactions

This is the best damn storyline in WWE today.
Roman Reigns is doing incredibly well in this head of the family role. The backstage VIP lounge they have him in is so mafia boss and everything great about mob movies.
Reigns came out to discuss the consequences Jey will face and Jey appeared in Reigns’ lounge, but it turned out to be Jimmy! Jey attacked Roman when he turned around and they traded kicks, with Jey getting the better of him. Jimmy came out to celebrate with his brother, but Roman grabbed the mic and said Jimmy, Jey, their wives, and their children will be excommunicated from the family.
The Hell in a Cell lowered, and Jey walked down and climbed up the cell. What a visual that was. Jey up a whole person’s length above Roman as Roman looked up at him.
This is such a phenomenal feud and while I’ve complained about feuds being too long and drawn out, I… I don’t know I don’t want this one to end! It’s shockingly great for WWE’s standards. What makes it even more incredible, is that this is the dude that Vince McMahon tried for years to force us all to see as his company’s top star. And now, he is. He is! It’s amazing.
All Vince had to do was play to Roman’s strengths. Here we are six years after the break-up of the Shield and Roman is finally who he always should have been. I cannot wait for this match.

Contract is signed
Bayley said she can’t seem to get away from Sasha Banks no matter what she does.
She said the last thing she wants to do is give Sasha what she wants, and that’s why she isn’t signing the contract. She did what she did because she wants to be done with Sasha, but it seems she’s an even bigger pain in the ass than she was before.
Sasha Banks came out holding the contract. She got in the ring and confronted Bayley. Bayley tried to attack her with the chair she keeps sitting in but Sasha ducked under it and grabbed the title. She gave Bayley a nasty knee to the face and then she got Bayley mangled in the chair and forced her to sign the contract. That was a really cool visual, too.
I thought this was a perfect WrestleMania match, but thinking over it again, Hell in a Cell is a great match to somewhat finish the feud. To be honest, I’m not thrilled that they kept them on the same brand because Hell in a Cell should be the decisive finish. Most likely, now it won’t. They’ll have a rematch or two. Or three.
Or… four.

Seth Rollins def. Murphy - Match of the night right here. Murphy played the babyface in peril so well with a shoulder injury spot and Rollins took advantage of it. I absolutely loved the finish, where Murphy used the fact that he’s gotten to know Rollins over the past year. He knew when Rollins was about to do the Blackout twice and almost got a win, but Rollins one upped his former Disciple.
Aalyah was backstage watching the match, and Rey and Dom came up to her and told her to stop watching. She came out to defend Murphy after the match as Rollins grabbed a kendo stick, and she got in the ring to get Rollins away from him. Dom came in and then Rollins blindsided him. Soooooo that isn’t done yet. I really enjoyed this whole thing, though. I hope that we finish the Rollins/Mysterios stuff soon.

Lars Sullivan def. Chad Gable - I initially was worried about this, but they actually let Gable be smart! He raked Lars’ eyes and got the Freak (don’t do a drinking game with this nickname) off his game for a moment. After the match, Chad Gable, known as Shorty G, quit. In the back, Adam Pearce asked him if he really is quitting, and G said “Yes. As Shorty G.”
YAY! The Chad Gable is back. This was legitimately one of the best moments of the show. I hated this Shorty G shit, and never called him that as long as I’ve been covering WWE. Let the Olympic wrestler loose!

Street Profits, KO, and Bryan def. The Artists, Roode, and Ziggler - The KO Show before the match was all about showing off the ”new blood” in SmackDown’s tag team division, while giving us what could be the start of a new team. Yeah, a new team, from the company that loves splitting them up. The match itself was really good, with each person getting their moment to shine. They played a potential injury angle on Bryan’s knee and had an odd commercial break where the referee was at the count of 5 when Cesaro layed Bryan out on the floor and got back in the ring. He... clearly wouldn’t have made it back in the ring and the match would have been over.

Tez and Dawkins were great in this match, with Tez getting incredible air as usual for a winning frog splash. Dawkins is a great hot tag, too. After the match, Bryan was hyped backstage and told Street Profits to fist him. That’s not PG! I would absolutely love to see KO and Daniel Bryan team up. They have really good chemistry and I love seeing this Bryan around. He brings a smile to my face every time I see him.

Bianca Belair def. Zelina Vega - This was a quick match but had the very best of Bianca on show. I love her so much. She is the very definition of charisma. Zelina slapped her and that was a very bad idea.

Law & Otis - I went into this thinking it was going to be more serious and how stupid am I? Look, this week had a musical number on another wrestling show, so I can’t knock it too much. For the record, I liked the musical number more than this, but this had fun moments. Asuka’s Japanese testimony was a highlight and I enjoyed the sound effects, particularly the ca-ching sound signifying Miz bribed Judge JBL. Let’s remember though, that WWE just did a draft, and now a Raw and SmackDown wrestler will be wrestling each other on Sunday. I suggested previously that doing the draft between pay-per-views was silly, as feuds could have wrapped up at Hell in a Cell without having to do stuff like this. What’s the point of the damn draft then?

SmackDown delivered a really good show for Hell in a Cell. I’m way more excited to see SmackDown matches. Raw is just not compelling. Orton and McIntyre is interesting, but the third match already in the series. The blue brand is the A show.

Don't forget that we are not letting up, #ItIsNotFinished #EndSARS

WWE Raw Reviews recaps and reactions

Alexa Bliss has let him in.
So we had a very interesting Firefly Fun House and main event on this show, and while I really enjoyed most of it, I’m left scratching my head about one key part.
In the Fun House, Alexa Bliss brought tea for Ramblin’ Rabbit and attempted to kill him. They did some continuity playing up Orton’s past with Bray with a picture of a house on fire which I believe has always been in the Fun House but was a nice angle.
On A Moment of Bliss, Randy could tell that something was up, because Alexa did absolutely nothing to hide the fact that the Fiend was going to show up. She’s doing this role perfectly. I know a lot of people aren’t really into the horror aspect of this, but I am digging it. Alexa is a horror fanatic so she’s living her dream right now.
But instead of the Fiend showing up, McIntyre appeared and started brawling with Orton as Alexa sat up on the top turnbuckle laughing. The lights then went out, and came back on with only Drew in the ring and Orton up on the ramp. They did the classic “shit he’s behind me” camera angle and facial with Orton and Orton slowly started walking back down to the ring.
This is where it got strange. Drew totally ignored the Fiend. I... don’t get it. He brawled with Randy around the ring and then onto the announce table, and the show went off the air. Fiend completely disappeared, and Drew acted as if none of that happened. Why?
Later on Drew gets involved with Miz and Morrison and it leads you to believe that’s Drew’s next feud, but then they do this. I am confused. I think all of this would have been fine with me if the show ended with Orton up on the ramp and a Mandible claw in his mouth. I worry about how they’re going to book the Fiend here, because if that was any type of inclination, I don’t see good things in the future.
And yeah, I know how capable they are of trashing the Fiend’s booking. It’s the reason why I quit WWE after last year’s Hell in a Cell. When it comes to the Fiend, I’m cautiously optimistic.

The Rest
Drew McIntyre def. Miz - All the promo before this did was continue to remind me how much I hate Miz and Morrison together. McIntyre’s bored and uninterested look as they were talking was all of us. Me, at least. Shout out to angry Miz girl from 10 years ago.
Miz tossed Drew into the steel steps and they played up Drew crashing through the table last night. Miz took control and Morrison took a cheap shot while the ref wasn’t looking. Morrison then tried hitting Drew with the briefcase but he tossed Morrison 50 feet and threw the briefcase up the ramp. Miz had a really nice sell of the Claymore.

AJ Styles def. Jeff Hardy - Styles did some talking but all I can really focus on is how friggin huge Jordan is. He’s nearly as tall standing outside the ring as Styles standing in the ring. WWE finds weird spots to go to commercial. Hardy dove off the ropes and into Jordan, and then they cut right there. Jeff had a cool pin attempt after a side Russian leg sweep. If Jeff really knew of the threat that Jordan is, I don’t get why he would use the ringposts on the side the behemoth was standing next to, because it cost him the match. Really nice Phenomenal forearm.
I somehow forgot about the whole Elias thing and jumped when he attacked Jeff after the match. That’s not going to be a fun continuation. I’m expecting this to last until 2021.

Keith Lee def. Elias - The match started off right, with Lee dominating. Then a bunch of Elias getting over on him, and then what I thought would be the ending of this was Strowman coming out to distract Lee. We got Jeff distracting Elias instead! While I hate that the feud is continuing, I rather have Lee in the Survivor Series match, so I’ll take it. Also, why is Jeff better at smashing guitars than the dude with the actual guitar smashing thing? That guitar shattered.

Sheamus def. Matt Riddle - Every guy fighting to be on the men’s Raw Survivor Series team was on SmackDown a few weeks ago, except for Keith Lee. That’s a bit strange. This match was pretty good. Sheamus is a great brawler and he brought the ferocity here. Riddle sold Sheamus’ double knees across the back of his spine really well. I almost thought he was legitimately injured. Riddle’s back gave out on a Bro Derek attempt and Sheamus hit the Brogue kick for the win. You know what? These dudes have some pretty good in ring chemistry together.

Lana wins a fatal four way - and then gets put through the announce table again by her Survivor Series partner, Nia Jax. Strange that Nia couldn’t put that gimmick away for a few weeks so she wouldn’t injure someone on her team, but semantics I guess? Also, Nikki Cross was in this match and Alexa Bliss is a crazy lady right now, and it’s weird that after all of their history together, they aren’t using her to close that friendship up and make Nikki look more like a concerned friend.

New Day and Asuka rock - New Day dressed up as Street Profits and did their old gimmick of announcing matches, this time for Survivor Series. They’ll be facing Street Profits, Lashley will be facing Sami Zayn (remember that feud, y’all?), Orton and Reigns will face off, and Asuka will face Sasha Banks. Asuka came into the shot and told The Hurt Business that she and New Day rock and then danced. I love her. I love all three of them. Kofi went full Dawkins. Never go full Dawkins, fam.

Lucha House Party def. Akira Tozawa and Drew Gulak - WWE cares more about putting random people who shouldn’t be tagging together in a match than building actual tag teams. It’s really ridiculous. R-Truth came out and everyone tried to pin him, and then Dorado dove off the top rope to pin him but pinned Gulak instead. They all chased Truth to the back. Pointless match.

The Hurt Business def. RETRIBUTION via DQ - What the hell was that camerawork as RETRIBUTION walked down the ramp? Holy shit. Lashley started with T-Bar and they traded barbs. Mia Yim started flopping around in the ring trying to brush something off of her and MVP got distracted and was eliminated by Slapjack. Lashley eliminated him after the break. Lashley and T-Bar were counted out. Shelton eliminated Mace, and then there was one. Ali caused a DQ using a chair on Cedric.
I’m now realizing that WWE was smart to hire the violent anarchist group because the world is being shown every week how terrible they actually are at everything. Perfect example of dudes who talk shit and have nothing to back it up.

This show wasn’t bad, but I’m still finding more things to dislike than like.
One thing’s for sure — it’s time for BRAND WARFARE again! You know, because Survivor Series is the… only… time Raw and SmackDown go head to head. Only time. I swear.

Sasha's closing performance really deserves recognition. Her focused glare on Bayley while the ref kept trying to hand her the title.
And then, the second frame. If that doesn't scream BOSS, I don't know what does

WWE NXT Halloween Havoc reviews recaps and reactions

Who is that Masked Man?
Johnny Gargano picked up what has to be considered an upset win over Damian Priest.
They opened the show with the first of the wheel matches. It landed on “Devil’s Playground” which the announcers described as Falls Count Anywhere, No Count out, No DQ, Anything Goes. That’s super redundant. A Falls Count Anywhere match is all those things. But of course, that doesn’t have a spooky Halloween Theme. Which is fine. But it’s a reminder that there are so many names for the same stipulations in wrestling.
It was a fun match, fighting through the array of impressive Halloween decorations. They made full use of the stipulation, moving all around the CWC.
The match ended up on a platform that housed a second wheel, putting Johnny next to his sworn enemy (a wheel) for the closing moments of the match. Gargano held his own by unleashing a barrage onto Priest using a garbage can, but the champ fought back and appeared to have this locked up with the Reckoning.
But before he could deliver the move, a mystery individual in a Scream mask (maybe weird principal Henry Winkler?) attacked Priest with a pipe. Johnny delivered a Hurricane DDT using the wheel (take that, wheel!), and then hit the champ over the head with a tombstone that the person in the Scream mask (maybe known wrestler David Arquette who was in Scream?) handed him. This knocked Priest off the ledge and allowed the challenger to cover for the pin.
The masked individual came to play later in the night during Candice LeRae’s match. Indi Hartwell, who’s been helping the Garganos, was nowhere to be seen so maybe it’s her. There’s been speculation that Austin Theory, who “quit” last week, is helping the couple. I’m still holding out hope for David Arquette, mainly because that’d be crazy.

Tables, Ladders, & Scares
Candice LeRae was not as lucky as her husband this week.
Before I even jump into this main event, I’d like to acknowledge how smart they laid this episode out. I never expected either Johnny or Candice to win. But by leading off with the surprise Gargano victory, it set the stage for a possible LeRae victory later in the night. It was suddenly entirely possible that they’d book the Garganos as champions. So when Io Shirai climbed the ladder in this Tables, Ladders, and Scares match and retained her title, it was no longer the obvious outcome. It put the drama back into this match.
As mentioned, the wheel landed on a Tables, Ladders, and Scares match (a TLC with some body parts to add in the scares). The two women had themselves a really fun match with the stipulation, with some big spots, such as a swinging neck break through tables or Candice taking a big spill from the ladder in the ring through a ladder set up between the ring apron and announce table. (She broke that fall with her knee so... ouch.)
The masked individual from Johnny’s match attempted to help LeRae and would have gotten away with it too if it weren’t for that damn Shotzi Blackheart. Shotzi neutralized the mystery person and this allowed Io Shirai to knock over the ladder that Candice was standing on, sending the challenger to the floor. All that was left was climbing up and claiming her gold.
While I would have enjoyed the Gargano Way holding both titles, I am glad Io is still champion. She’s been fantastic in the role. They’ve figured out the way to present her, using video promos that capture her cool vibe and of course superb matches all the time. With women like Rhea Ripley, Ember Moon, and Toni Storm waiting in the wings for a title shot, the future continues to look bright.

Bruising
Pat McAfee has a pretty rad stable going on.
The former punter, with tag champions Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch at his side, delivered a detailed explanation of his plot to get revenge on Adam Cole. It was pretty much the same explanation he delivered on Twitter, but they needed to do it here too. They can’t depend on people following an explanation on Twitter. If anything, he shouldn’t have given so much away on the social media.
But that’s OK either way because this segment added way more to this angle.
Kyle O’Reilly came out alone, looking to take on all three men. But soon he had help in a returning Pete Dunne, who walked out with two chairs to help KOR take down Pat and co.
This never sat right. What problem did Pete have with McAfee or the tag champs? Of course this didn’t make sense. Because the Bruiserweight was actually aligned with them. (This makes more sense as Undisputed has antagonized Dunne for ages.)
He attacked O’Reilly with the chair and then the four of them beat down the last standing member of Undisputed.
This pretty much kills my “Kyle O’Reilly is really behind this” theory. Because my man took a beating this week. Now maybe he’s a disciple of the Eric Bischoff commitment to the long con, willing to take beatings to get people off your scent. But more likely they’re setting up a babyface Undisputed against McAfee’s posse.
This would normally be the time of the year for WarGames, but we haven’t heard anything about that. They wouldn’t be able to do it in the small Capitol Wrestling Center, but they could run it in Amyway or wherever they find next if that’s what they’re planning.

Zombieland
The Haunted House of Terror match was wild.
Much like the House of Horrors match that they probably didn’t want to name it after because of the bad connotation associated with that match, this started off site as a cinematic and ended up in the CWC.
This type of match isn’t for everyone. Some people like campy and sometimes supernatural in their wrestling. Others like a more realistic vibe. Personally, if done well enough, I enjoy myself some stupid and some outrageous.
The first segment was up my alley, a lot of it because of how damn good Cameron Grimes is. He found his NXT personality and it is excellent. The dude did not shut up while walking through the house, somehow so obnoxious that person who’s alone in a haunted house was still the villain. He really had me laughing when he walked into the bathroom with a woman showering and started undressing to join what was obviously a zombie. “I’m feeling a bit Grimey” was an all time douchey line.
All the actual haunted house stuff I enjoyed. The fellow wrestling zombies and referee. Lumis stalking him from all angles. Just some real campy goodness.
I didn’t feel exactly the same when the match returned to the CWC. The nice thing about a cinematic is it’s separate from the world within the arena. The arena is for more real matches like Rhea vs. Raquel. So bringing all the zombies back from the house to continue to torment Grimes was a little tougher to swallow.
That being said, the entire night had an extra layer of camp that went along with the spirit of the corny WCW Halloween Havoc’s and the campiness of horror movies in general. In that sense, I give it a pretty easy pass than I would if this were a normal night.
In the end, this was fun and allowed both men to continue to excel at their characters. Lumis has his stalker character down while Grimes plays an incredible overly arrogant heel. And both are still midcard enough that this won’t hurt anything they’re planning for either in the future.
While I wouldn’t want to see more zombies in the CWC, for one night only on Halloween, it was a fun time.

Delivering
Coming into Halloween Havoc, the match I anticipated the most was the one between Rhea Ripley and Raquel González. They had done such a great job building this match, slowly teasing the issues between the two big women of NXT but never going one on one until this week.
It delivered.
Right off the bat, they bring the power game. And the match remained a slugfest between two powerhouses the entire time. That’s what we tuned into see. Not trading highflying moves or long submissions. (We saw a little of both but this was a hoss fight.) It was billed as a brawl and that’s what we got.
This did a fantastic job building Raquel. She went from Dakota Kai’s heavy to a big player in the women’s division in no time, and this match did its part in establishing her. Rhea Ripley sold the hell out of González’s power, not just taking the moves but with her facial expressions when should couldn’t over power her opponent like she is so accustomed to.
Rhea was able to gut out the win, but this was a win for González too. Ripley can move up, even to a title match. But González is going to be a force in the women’s division.

All the Rest:
- Santos Escobar defeated Jake Atlas in a non-title match. But it wasn’t a clean win. Atlas took a headbutt on the outside of the ring from Raul Mendoza who was wearing the loaded luchador mask. It was a good bit of heeling that really had me feeling “Man, that wasn’t fair” when it was over. We’ll see if Jake is able to get his revenge.

Halloween Havoc was a really fun show. I appreciated the extra level of 80s corny with the vibe. Shotzi Blackheart delivered her lines like you would see if you combined metal and cheesy horror. The matches were all top notch, we have some intrigue in a new masked individual (c’mon, David Arquette!), and Pete Dunne returned to NXT’s hottest angle.

Rigging a wheel is easy as cake. Dubious folks do it all the time at carnivals.

Don't really think this Pete Dunne turn was surprising to anybody.

Also, was Kyle O'Reilly of the Undisputed Era, that has been jumping wrestlers since TakeOver Brooklyn III, actually intend to face off against 3 people? Omo, face turn dey carry craze come.
