You're killing it, man.

Loving it. I find characters like May too cliche. But what the heck....

Please drop an update soon. I'm guessing Fiyi (beautiful name by the way) will hook up with August /Olumide at the club.

Ann2012, I thought we were friends. How come you never invite me to the good stuff.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Olumide looked at the lady shivering in his arms even though she was wearing his jacket. He tried to open his door gently without alarming her.

With the accomplishment of the feat, he moved towards the longest sofa in his apartment, knowing it will accommodate her length.

He laid her down gently and pulled the jacket closer. He needed to get her a duvet but before that, he figured that she might need the light to assure her f her safety even though he could find his way around without the light.

He forged towards the wall on his right and lit up the apartment. He wasn’t sure if it was shock that was making her shiver or she was feeling cold.

He was surprised when he got a call from August earlier that he needed help urgently.
August is his best friend and they had spoken a few minutes before he called him back to make the urgent request. Few minutes after the urgent call, he sent him an address and  Fiyi’s phone number and pleaded with him to pick her up.

At first, he was skeptical because he wondered what she could be doing at a hotel by that time of the night while school was in session.

So many questions begged for answers but he couldn’t ask because she was still in a state of shock and shivering badly.

He went to his mini bar to get her a shot of brandy. At least something to take off the shock.

“Drink up, ” he said to her handing her the glass.

“I - I - don’t drink, ” she stuttered.
“Just take this, it will take the cold off.”

Fiyi collected the glass with shaky hands and downed the content.
She looked around a few minutes later,  for her phone but couldn’t find it.

“I need to call my brother, ” She mumbled

“At this time of the night?”

“Yes, it is urgent.”

Olumide was trying hard not to judge her, but the remains of the red material peeping under his jacket was making it difficult.

Olumide handed his phone to her and watch her dial a number.

She looked at him cautiously seeking privacy so he decided to excuse her.

He walked towards the bedroom. get her a duvet, prepare his bed for bed, and hopefully get some rest before he has to prepare for work.

Hers was a typical case of never judge a book by its cover. He has seen her at the Wright’s place severally and he had not only admired her looks but the fact that she could hold her own, even when May and her friends were around. Everyone knew how May could be especially if she doesn’t like someone and he knew Fiyi was on her list.
August was out of town which explains why he was the one that went to pick her up.

He looked through his closet for something she could wear.

“Thank you so much, for coming to my rescue. I called August when I didn’t know who to call. I was scared.” She explained hurriedly immediately he stepped out of his bedroom in his pajama bottoms and a singlet.

“It’s okay, ” He responded. She looked a bit calm now and over the shock. She may not need the duvet after all. He thought to himself.

“I am sorry you had to come out this late at  n…”

“What were you doing there?” Olumide burst out before he could stop himself.

“I never took you for a runs babe.”

“Please don’t judge me, ” she mumbled with a voice laden with tears.

“You are making it difficult for me not to. Just look at what you have on,” He waved at her.

“How do you explain your mission in a hotel by this time of the night, what conclusion am I supposed to come to?”

Fiyi ignored him and looked frantically for her sling purse. She just remembered that she had put her wad of cash in it before everything went haywire.

“What are you looking for?”

“My purse, I am sure I picked it.”

“It’s in the car.”

She sighed in relief and laid down on the couch.
At this point, she didn’t care what he or anybody thought of her as long as she had the cash she wanted. She could go to sleep. She pulled the jacket closer to her body and closed her eyes.

“I don’t deserve an explanation?” Olumide stared at her lying figure in surprise

“Why should I bother, you have already concluded.”

“I am sorry.”

“No problem, I don’t blame you. It’s okay to think whatever you want” She shifted to find a more comfortable position.

“Can you at least tell me what happened?”

Fiyi thought about it for a while

“Please?”

“I -  I went to a party with my friends. They told me I could get cash just for attending the party. I was desperate and I went with them.”

“What do you need the money for?”

“My mom, She is sick and we need cash urgently.”

Olumide sighed and urged her to continue

“Well, we went to the party, had fun. We were given money as souvenirs. I thought that was all.

Then they started sharing girls”

“What?”

“They said it’s the norm. I was given a partner. They said we were expected to give something in exchange for the cash we got.”

“What did you expect?” Olumide asked

“All they told me was that we were going to keep the guys' company and they'd give us cash in return .”

She sighed and adjusted on the sofa. She couldn’t believe what she went through.

“When they were allocating partners, I didn’t understand at first till the guy that was with me said it was time to go to our room.” She sighed trying to dislodge the memory.

“I was nervous and tried to get one of my friends to look at me and explain what was happening. I tried to stall, they all left and we had to too. I followed him slowly and ran back halfway to escape.”

“This sounds more like a movie to me.”

“Well, I had to do something. He caught up with me and pulled me from the back. As I struggled with him, he groped me and snatched me up as if I was paper.” She shuddered at the memory.

“There was nobody in the passage or anywhere around to save you?”

“It was late so I guess they had all retired to their rooms.”

“So how did you escape, and why couldn’t you scream?”

“I didn’t want people to come outside and see me that way.”

“So you prefer to rape to embarrassment?”

“I didn’t think that far.”

“Obviously.” Olumide shrugged

“I think I’d like to sleep now,”  Fiyi said when she realized that there was nothing to be said to him to change his opinion.

“You can take the guest room.  Come with me.” Olumide was beyond angry, why would she claim she went to a party and got cash and expected not to be touched.

He couldn’t explain the anger he felt that someone touched her inappropriately.

CHAPTER EIGHT

It was a Sunday morning, days after her ordeal. She left Olumide's house early the second day. She wanted to leave without seeing him to avoid the contemptuous look from him, but she had to pick her purse from his car.

She pleaded with him not to tell August anything. She didn't want him to judge her too.

Watching her mother go about the living room sorting out the clothes she brought in from the line, Fiyi was happy they could save her because she had done too much for them not to sacrifice so little for her.

"I thought you wanted to go to your madam's house before leaving for school?" Her mother interrupted her thoughts.

"I will leave in a few minutes, I want the boys to come back before I leave."

"Please don't leave her house late so that you won't get to school late."

"Yes mom, I'll try."

Her mother put the cloth she was sorting aside and sat down on the edge of the sofa to face her.

"I know I never said this, but I am grateful for the role you and your brother played while I was in the hospital."

"Mom, it is our duty to take care of you. You do a lot for us and it is only proper for us to do the little we can."

"I am sorry all I yapped about in the first few days after, was about the source of the money."

"Mom, I understand. It is the constant yap as you call it, that keeps me grounded."

Her mother sighed.
"I should have trusted that you would not take the wrong decision. I should have trusted that you would do the right thing."

That statement hit her hard because the decision she took was a hard one but thankfully, it didn't lead to something worse than what happened that night.
On one hand, she was glad she took the decision because it was what kept her mother alive.
She is letting go of the memory gradually, although she knew it would not leave her completely.

"Why don't you get ready, your brothers will soon be back."

"Okay, ma. She went to her room to pick up her bag."

"Please take care of yourself mom, the call I received that day scared me."

"I told you, I am taking it easy now. I don't stress myself out and I take my drugs."

"I will call you when I get to school."

"God bless you for me. You will not die, I will not lose you and your brothers."Her mother continued to pray until she couldn't hear her again.

*****
Fiyi opened the door to the living room from the kitchen. she came in through the back door knowing the front door would be locked for security purposes. She walked to the living room to see if anyone was there.

It was a Saturday and May usually had one outing or other with her friends. August sometimes had his friends over so she was surprised to see only August and one of May's friends cuddled up in front of the T.V.

"Baby!" August said immediately he saw her.

"Baby?" The girl beside him questioned

"Good afternoon ma," Fiyi said hurriedly. She is one of May's closest friends and she could get her in trouble.

"He doesn't mean it that way ma."

"Oh! She reads my mind now, " August teased as he walks up to hug her. Fiyi moved back to avoid the contact

"What now, you didn't miss me?"

Fiyi was finding it difficult to respond to August's warm greeting. If they were alone, she would have been happy because truth be told she missed him too and they have not had the chance to talk since his return from his official trip.

"How are you?" August adjusted when he realized she was not comfortable with the lady.

"I am fine. You?"

"I am good. How have you been?"

The lady watched them trying not to show her anger. She worked so hard to get to this level with August then he leaves her to greet a maid warmly.
She wondered the kind of relationship between them and she hoped it was not what she thought because she would fight tooth and nail to hold on to August.

"I will just get on with my duties. Is Madam around?"

"Which of the Madams?" August teased.

"Your mom."

"No," August replied walking back to his former position. "Pops is around so they are out for the weekend."

"Oh! How is he?"

"He's good, I guess."

"What about Miss May?"

"She left with her friends except for the sugar here." He leaned in to kiss her on the lips.

"Okay, I'll be around."

"You owe me gist remember? Olumide did not give me details. I did not understand half of what he talked about."

Fiyi left without a reply. She huffed at the mention of Olumide's name. She found it difficult to understand why he was angry with her. She had called to thank him a few days after the incident and he had sounded as if she was disturbing him with the call.

She looked back at August who was still trying to kiss his babe, the lady was angry that he left her to attend to another girl.
She has warned August several times to watch the kind of conversations he had with her when people were around. Especially May's friends. Most of them would not understand that he was just her friend.

Only God knows the kind of report she'd give to May when she comes back. Her life was hard enough with May without the addition of unnecessary tension.

August was a rare specie of boss, at least from movies she has watched and what she has heard people say about male bosses.
He was more of a friend to her and genuinely cared about her welfare. At first, she thought he wanted more than friendship with her but he later told her that he just liked her as a sister and wanted to be there for her.

CHAPTER NINE

"I don’t understand your fascination with this girl, why do we have to drive to her school, to deliver a cake when we can get someone to deliver it?" Olumide complained as he maneuvered the busy roads leading to Fiyi’s school.

"I just want to surprise her."

"I know, but must you be there?"

"Do I sense anger in your tone?"

"I just don’t understand, She is not your spec. You have an array of girls to choose from, why her?"

August laughed out loud. Not you too, guy.

"Fiyi is my baby, there is absolutely nothing between us."

"Hmm."

"I am serious. She is a young girl fighting so hard to make something of herself. I admire her so much.

She is the first girl in a long while to see me for me. Although much younger, she speaks a lot of sense."

"Are we talking about the same girl?" Olumide sneered.

"Fiyi has been dealt a lot of blows but has not given up on her dreams. I like her tenacity."

"A lot of blows how? she knows how to take care of herself," Olumide replied when he remembered her stint at the hotel the other night.

"Guy, do I sense animosity, what do you have against her?"
"Nothing, just saying, " he shrugged

"Please don’t join ranks with May, she is a good girl."

"This is not about class, girls like her will do anything to get cash."

"Lumi! I can’t believe you just said that."

"You needed to see how I met her that night. She didn’t feel remorseful, she was scared alright, but how do I know she was not acting that part out?"

"Wait guy, I am suspecting you."

"Of what?"

"I reserve my comment. This issue is not that deep you know?  Her mother was sick, and she had nobody. Only her brothers and they are younger."

"Wait, what about their pops?"

"They lost him when she gained admission."

"Wow!"

"You see, she could have turned wild and use poverty as an excuse. Why do you think she is working at our house?"

Olumide kept quiet as they neared the school gate. August asked for directions to the hostel she told him she was staying and they drove straight down, Olumide hooting at some of the students walking past.

On arrival in front of her hostel, Olumide waited in the car and watched his friend sitting on the bonnet waiting for her. He was trying to get a glimpse of the main entrance too.

At first, when she came out of the entrance there was a look of unbelief when she spotted August. Olumide could see the pure look of surprise mixed with joy. She had blue jean shorts and a pink tank top on with no makeup but she looked stunning and relaxed.

Olumide had never seen her like this, and he feasted his eyes. Her chocolate color was clean and spotless. Her hair was natural and all back. She did not look a day over 16 but he knew she was 19 and clocking 20 today which is why they were there to surprise her although he was an unwilling participant.

He maintained his position where he was and watched her hug August so many times in joy.

She was saying so many things at once and Olumide just watched her in delight.

As much as he denied the attraction he felt towards her, it was there. The night he went to pick her did not change how he felt only that he was disappointed that she'd do such a thing. Now he knew better and his respect for her soared.

August pulled her towards the car to get her cake after a while. They seem to have so much to say to each other.

"Aww, you even got me a cake," she said as she opened the passenger door.

"Good evening, " she said to him briefly and pulled the cake to herself.

"Sit a bit, let’s gist," August said to her.

"Are you sure? she looked skeptically at Olumide. She’d prefer to be anywhere but in his car.

"Do you want me to excuse you?" Olumide asked.

"For what na? We are here for the birthday girl and she must entertain us."

August smiled and urged her to sit in the car while he sat in from with his friend with his legs outside.

Fiyi sat the same way at the back.

"So how has your day been? Any cakes, trips, or gifts?"

"Nothing new, you are the one with the followers. My class rep got me a gift, then my roommate got me snacks and drinks. I have an exam tomorrow, so I am trying to study."

"I would have loved to take you to dinner or something."

"Awww, this is enough. You have really upped my rep. Ah! All these girls will be treating me with respect."
She waved her hands around excitedly.

"Only me fine, tall and handsome guy came to visit me on my birthday "

"Really? I can’t believe you said I am fine."

"You know you are joor, with all the female followership."

"I try he smiled"

"August!  you went for an official trip, you still snapped a nude picture and put on insta."

Olumide tried not to smile as he listened to their conversation.

August laughed out loud. "Fiyi I was not naked, I had a short on."

"The abs were on display though, I bet the girls loved it."

"You never cease to amaze me. Always harassing me, I told you the class rep likes you."

"Don’t even go there, " She cautioned.

"I shouldn’t go there but you can harass me?"

"Let me get you snacks, you have been here for sometime now."

"No, we are okay. Let’s leave you to study."

"Thank you so much." She walked to the front to hug him again, then back to pick her cake.

Olumide flipped his wallet open and counted cash which he handed to her.

"Here, for your birthday," he said to her.

Fiyi was shocked looked at August who was smiling at something she did not understand.

"No, thank you." She replied curtly.

"It’s for your birthday, August didn’t tell me about it early."

"No sir, thank you. Thanks for the visit."

Olumide was angry. Who rejects a goodwill gift. What was her problem?

He put the money back in his wallet and watched as she stepped away from the car.

He started the car, and angrily honked for his friend to get in.

"What was that about?" He asked his friend. Driving towards the gate.

August shrugged

"She successfully ignores me throughout the visit then rejects the money I gave her."

"She knows you don’t like her and she has reciprocated."

August was trying so hard not to laugh because he knew Olumide was fuming
"I don’t get?"

" Leave matter for Mathias, face front and drive."

Fiyi just earned my respect.

Life is full of ups and downs. Most times we need to look before we leap.
Being judgemental outrightly is a very big error.Which is what Olamide committed.

People are passing through a lot, some see the option before them as the only one.

CHAPTER TEN

"Good afternoon sir," Fiyi checked the leather watch strapped to her wrist to confirm it was noon. She had come in pretty early today to get her chores done so that she'd leave early.

"I am here ma," she turned to May who had called on her from the laundry room where she was sorting out the clothes she had put out to dry.

"I want you to get my visitor a glass of wine and prepare whatever he'd like to eat." She ordered flippantly.

Fiyi knew Olumide was there to see her brother. May was just looking for a way to rile her up as usual.

"Ma'am I will bring the glass of wine but I told madam that I'd like to leave early today. I may not be able to prepare the meal," she explained calmly.

"Excuse me, you don't dictate what goes on in this house. You are free to go wherever you want as long as you do as directed."

"Ma, I have an assessment and I need to leave on time to make it there," she tried to explain to her.

"Fiyi, you don't have to bother," Olumide interrupted, "I am here to see August and don't mind waiting without the food."

"Doesn't matter, you are a visitor and we should be able to entertain you" May insisted.

"Do as you are told, " She turned back to Fiyi.

"If you don't cook, you will get fired. I don't care if you have an exam. If we don't pay you, can you write the exam?"

"May! It's not that bad, I said I am not hungry."

Fiyi stood there watching the events play out. She did not know why May hated her so much. She's tried so hard to please her.

"Just get me the drink and leave," Olumide said to Fiyi.

"You wouldn't dare," May was beginning to raise her voice. "Dare me."

Fiyi walked to the kitchen, tears pooling behind her lids. It was the beginning of the new session and the test was one of the ways the lecturers punished students that resume school late.

The urge to lash out in anger dueled with reasoning. Apart from being her boss, respect for elders no matter how minute the difference was ingrained in her.

Her test is a must but she doubted if May would reason with her.

She could still hear her ranting in the living room. Then a knock on the kitchen door alerted her to a presence before Olumide walked in.

"Good afternoon sir."

"You already greeted me Fiyi." he smiled.

"I was about to get a glass for your drink si..."

Olumide looked at her " I insist you stop calling me sir."

"You are my boss' friend."

"So?"

"I don't think..."

"When is your test?"

"Four pm"

"it's two pm now, can you at least do something to keep her off your back?

"I.."

" I think she is very angry and you know the way she is," Olumide persuaded

"I can't, she gave in to tears. The journey to school is about an hour. I don't even know how long it will take to get a bus at the bus stop. I need to do last-minute revisions with my friends too."

Olumide felt sorry for her. He tried to pull her into his arms but she resisted.

"How about I take you to school?"

"No. Olumide you will not do that." May burst into the kitchen.

"It is because of things like this that she thinks she is better than everyone.

Why will you even offer to take her? You are here to see my brother."

Fiyi struggled to keep her composure as she put back the glass and departed.

"Come back here."

May started after her but Olumide pulled her back.

"Leave me alone, I need to teach her a lesson."

"What did she do to you? she said she has a test."

"I just want her to do what she is paid to do. Is that too much to ask?" She huffed

"All she does is flaunt herself around this place when I have visitors or when my brother's friends come around."

"I don't understand."

May sighed. "Look at you, for example, you are already suggesting you take her to school and she's making me out to be a bad person."

"You are not a bad person, May and I will never think of you that way. Just calm down. I was trying to resolve the issue. If she waits around to do what you want, then I can drop her off."

"She is just annoying." May tried to suppress her burning anger. "She doesn't respect me. I am her boss too."

"She knows that. Let's go to the living room he persuaded. I will just wait for your brother then we can order something."

" I am letting go because of you, I would have dealt with her seriously."

"I know." Olumide continued to placate her.

He walked outside in time, to see Fiyi walking towards the gate crying

He hurried after her and called out.

"I just want you to calm down. Don't leave for school in this state."

"What do I ever do to her?" She cried softly.

He pulled her gently towards his car. Fiyi noticed it was another one she's never seen.

"You don't have to drive me to school."

"I insist. You can't go to school in this state."

"No sir, I will be fine."

"Fiyi, I insist. I know I am not on the list of your favorite persons, I just want to help"

"What about August? You are here to see him."

"He'll understand. I'll just call him. He'd probably get angry if I let his baby leave in this condition."

Fiyi smiled through her tears. "Yeah, right."

Olumide opened the door for her.

"I still don't think..."

"I am just trying to be a friend Fiyi. I know I have judged you wrongly and I am sorry about that."

Fiyi sighed and entered the car.

"Thank you so much for doing this, I appreciate."

"Anything for a damsel in distress"

"As if" she smiled

He was happy he could make her smile. He strapped himself in and urged her to do the same.

Unknown to them May was watching through the window blinds. She had seen all the display and knew this was more than friendship.

No matter what anyone said to her, something was going on between the two. At first, it was her brother, now Olumide. She used to be Olumide's favorite girl. How dare this good for nothing Arrow come here and take her place. She watched Olumide drive out of the gate.

she was livid with anger.

May is in the last stage before she becomes a full blown witch, which is the stage I call jealousy.

She should be careful before the devil use her to shine.
She fail to understand that a diamond doesn't fail to glitter even in worst conditions.

Fiyi should also remember that diamonds are created under pressure so she should chill.

Destiny they say "can only be delayed but not destroyed".
