Great job Whyna, for this wonderful thread and especially for highlighting your efforts in securing a job in Vietnam. I am personally looking to visit and scout vietnam for opportunities, having travelled around and worked in Asian countries for most of my Adult life till date, I will like to know just how friendly vietnam is to those who wish to go the business route (1), having worked as a NNES teacher before, I don't especially fancy it because of the wage differences with the NES teachers but how easy is it to really secure this job as a NNES and what is the expected salary (2). Thanks for your time. And either way I will make my way soon to Vietnam as it remain the only South East Asia country I haven't been.

Why not tell us about your experiences in the SE Asian countries you've taught in. It'll be useful for prospective ESL teachers in this forum and it'll help in choosing. You know since VT is not opening borders now, they might switch to other SE Asian countries. Thanks.

That would divert from the purpose of this thread... I would create another thread for that but I'm like everyone here genuinely curious about Vietnam.. But I've taught in Thailand, Cambodia and i've gone on trips to Singapore, Malaysia (best food of all) attended conferences in the Philippines, oh and also a few visa runs to Myanmar and Laos( beautiful women). Unfortunately I've not had the opportunity to travel to Vietnam, I remember visiting the embassy last year Siam, Bangkok and they exclusively asked what passports I was applying to and told me I had to join a tour group to visit Vietnam or have a company or individual vouching for me before entry, this turned me off and I was frankly angered by the restrictions which only seem to apply to Nigerians only (I mean Cameroonians, Ghanaians are welcome without much scrutiny). I instead chose to visit visa free Maldives and had a good time with friends.
One of the ladies I was traveling with suggested visiting the visa free island "Phu Quoc" in Vietnam but you won't be allowed into the mainland I calculated visiting Maldives was the better choice of island.
As for teaching (especially in Thailand) I can tell you the pay is decent, you would make your bills but you won't be anywhere near upper middle class unless of course you have your own side business to move things along. Students are extremely cooperative and willing to learn but you gotta deal with the pay gap between NNES and NES (which somehow they think it's anyone with a white skin).

A guy here once created a thread of his experience in Thailand and it was really an eye-opener. I'll trade anything to read about your odyssey and exploits in these Asian countries. Should we look forward to reading your thread? Are you still in Asia?

Hello, how has the research and every every been? I have a little update for us specifically on my own moves.

I wish to In a special way appreciate @WhyNa for creating this thread and sharing her journey oth us.

Just as she said earlier, there are many ways to enter Vietnam and we know many people will discover many routes. The fact that you are reading this could be a sign that you want to travel therefore I encourage everybody to share their experiences or successes so far.

I want to share on the study route, for those who want to enter Vietnam through study route. I have made some little progress on this regard.

My own research started with finding good but cheap countries I could study In and work and stay back after my study to work. The first place I found was North Cyprus, it was actually cheap but my findings showed that WORK NO DEY THERE OH, NA SUFFER THINGS. I was wise enough to move on. I came across India again and ran away fast because I have researched them some few year back, it's very cheap but no work even for their people talk less of Nigerians and they don't like us.

Finally, I came to Vietnam. My findings was cool, I some some schools and applied while waiting for them, my research brought me to this thread. I focused my energy on trying to enter Vietnam through the work permit route of which @WhyNa's posts and updates have been of great blessing. In May, one of the schools got back to me and that was FPT university in Hanoi its a university that deals more on IT and business courses. I asked them about the visa and everything. They will prepare the visa for you while you get the Visa Stamp at the Vietnamese embassy Abuja.

I asked how much is The visa stamp they said they don't really know that I should contact the embassy. When I contacted the embassy, they said it varies depending on the type of student visa but that it's between 200 to 300 dollar.

Now, this process is very easy and you don't need to ask much questions and you don't need an agent.

1. Research top universities in Vietnam.
2. Get their admission office WhatsApp number. This guys are very helpful through their whatsapp, ask any questions. I always tell the person handling the FPT university admission WhatsApp number that am sorry for my to many questions and he/she will always tell me dont worry just ask.
3. Ask about their support systems. FPT university for example, helps with airport pick up, helps to get accomodation, help you get a part time job at most in 3 months after you arrive Vietnam.
4. Apply and ask if their are scholarship oppourtinties available. Due to this corona virus pandemic effect on the economy, Vietnam education industry dey find student and they are likely to give out discounts just as is happening in North cyprus now. So, if you don't ask they might not tell you.
5. Arrange soft copies of your documents and send to their mail then await their admission/Scholarship report. Note: No school will give you full scholarship, you can only get discounts and trust me their tuition fees are relatively cheap.
6. Make payment and they will start working on your visa which should take not more than a month.

Concerning coming to Vietnam, my school said they are working with their immigration department to make sure they allow international students and professors to enter the country when they open the borders hopefully by July ending so please confirm from your school before making payment. Me I never pay tuition few, I still dey hustle he money but once am ready to pay, I will reconfirm from the school because I need to be sure if I pay Now, I should come over before September.

Also, I don't know of other university but for my school, you get 1 year temporal residence to enable you get a job after your graduation. This to me is cool.

Finally, this process is very easy, you don't need to ask many questions or send me a mail or look for agent as long as study route is concerned, just get the school and the course of your choice, send them mail or chat their WhatsApp number and they will take it up from their.
Their Bsc it 3 years or 4 years those that are 3 years do 3 semesters per year while those that are 4 years do 2 semesters per year.
Masters is 2 years.
Most of the schools are also affiliated to universities in UK, US, Australia

I wish all luck, if any other person is making progress through another route please share too for those who might be interested.

I'm currently in Nigeria, hoping a day will come when we travelers can travel without having to isolate for 2 weeks. I look forward to putting everything together to present to people as the good and ugly side of Asian countries but it definitely won't be complete without experiencing a powerhouse like Vietnam.
Frankly of all the experiences Thailand takes the cake as it is where i have spent most of my adult life.. one thing is for sure no one can really hate the country. The key to navigating Asian countries is to just submit your Ego at the airport before entering anyone of them because going with an open and clean mind will open doors you thought were impossible to open.
One thing I can advocate for is if you're qualified, brave and diligent you won't suffer and truly we the guys have it easier in these countries than the ladies. So, that's why I especially salute Whyna because I know how tough it can be for women over there and how even most times your own brothers are the ones exploiting you.

Definitely at the turn of the year I'm packing my bags, looking to spend even more time in Singapore (cleanest place by a mile). So stay tuned maybe my lazy hands will get typing soon with pictures.

These books requires teachers to have basic phonics and diction knowledge. Without these, a teacher might struggle with those books. Now I understand why you said Native speakers struggle with teaching basic English. I love teaching and I have flair for it but private schools will discourage you with underpayments. I'm done with them sha. Imagine earning less than $53 a month Make VT open, I meuvve!!

I just finished nysc but I don't have my original waec (2012) and original bsc (2018) as the OP stated as the criteria in the first page, i was told it takes for the original certificates to be out.

Yes it's possible as Thailand is one of the countries allowed to enter under strict protocols.

However, he should remember that this isn't Africa and they will sniff him out just by looking at his travel history/visa stamp. showing date of entry. Also, he still has to pay for quarantine. he can try though

Get a TEFL/CELTA certificate first, then get the original WAEC and BSc certificate before heading to Abuja to Legalise them.

The biggest hurdle to cross here is getting a trusted visa agent in Vietnam when they deem it fit to open their borders.
If you have some mulla, you can get a company to bring you over.

PS: you'll be quarantined for 14 days, which you'll be paying for.

That happens when there's segregation between NNS and NS. Do you expect me to teach from the depth of my heart knowing people I'm better off earn more than me.

pls guys,I read on a site about MOVING TO VIETNAM that another option of moving is getting a business visa,travel to Vietnam and start applying for jobs. as soon as your three months visa is about to expire. you apply for work visa.

For WAEC, go to the school you wrote the exam. For BSc., go to your department
