Only First Class & 2:1 Graduates Will Be Employed As Teachers - FG by MrFarmer: 8:33pm On Nov 14, 2020
THE federal government said Saturday that only professional teachers with First Class certificates will be employed beginning from next year, 2021.

The government which said it would also consider people with 2.1 qualifications, explained that the measure was part of its renewed efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Nigerian schools.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Arc. Sonny Echonu made this known during a monitoring exercise of the Professional Qualifying Examination,PQE, organised by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria,TRCN.

No fewer than 17, 602 teachers from across 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are expected to participate in the examinations.

Addressing newsmen, Echono who stressed that the decision was aimed at having only the best brains in Nigerian classrooms as teachers, insists that as from 2021, only qualified teachers would be allowed to teach in the country.

According to him, a national implementation committee would be inaugurated in the coming week to ensure federal government’s agenda on teachers registration and revitalisation was achieved, especially, the entry qualification for teachers in schools.

In his words: “With effect from next year, we will not admit or engage people as teachers if they don’t meet a particular threshold. We are now limiting entry to only the best.

“You must have a first class or 2:1 as minimum and if you have qualification in other subjects that is not in education, we will arrange for a conversion programme to be administered by NTI, TRCN and any university that has faculties of education or this programme because you also have to learn ways of communicating and managing students.

“We are migrating teachers who are not qualified or do not have the requisite qualifications, competency, not licensed or registered to pseamless.out of our classrooms to make way for qualified personnel because we want to achieve learning and teaching and learning occurs in our schools.”

Impressed with the conduct of the PQE, he encouraged teachers who were yet to sit for the examinations to do so, adding that government through the TRCN, would continue to conduct the examinations for teachers.

Registrar/Chief Executive Officer TRCN, Prof Josiah Ajiboye who disclosed that Nigerians in diaspora have begun to sit for the examinations via online platforms without necessarily travelling back to Nigeria, noted that their certificates would be sent across even as the Council would write to the Teaching Council of countries where Nigerians were seeking for or engaged in their education system as teachers.

“There are Nigerians in diaspora who before they can get any teaching position must show evidence they are professional teachers and that they are registered with their teaching regulatory authority before they left the country.

“To provide that evidence you need to write our exams because we cannot issue you the letter of professional standing without sitting for TRCN examination and so we have placed the examination online for Nigerians in the diaspora and the response has been very huge. We have Nigerians cutting across countries of the world now writing the examinations.”

That one is first class does not mean he will make a good teacher.
In short, most first class graduates know the course but find it difficult to transfer the knowledge to children

does subject create terrible teachers ?” That is

Will a good teacher suddenly turn terrible simple because he is assigned to teach a particular course ?”

I examined the course in question and realized the subject itself are difficult to understand. Mathematics for example is dreaded by student. These students manage to learn enough to graduate and forget a large amount of what Is learnt immediately after graduation. Because of the unemployment problem in the country, these students find themselves as teachers and lecturers and are asked to teach the subject they once hated. The hatred for the subject resurfaces coupled with the fact that they do not know much. As a teacher, they have to maintain the illusion that they know. They do this by putting up a wicked looking face to scare students from asking much question so as not to expose their incompetence.

Secondly, some subjects are difficult to teach. Some phenomenon can be explained best using computer stimulated teaching aids which are unavailable in most academic institution. It takes a genius teacher to use an a better concept to relate the subject to the student interest for better comprehension.

But terrible teaching is not just a function of subject. Teachers personality. have a role to play. Highly Temperamental teachers make terrible teachers.impatient teachers do not give students enough opportunity to make mistake. They expect students to get it right at first attempt and would rush the scheme of work despite student slow comprehension ability. People who do not enjoy being around children make terrible teachers.

Becoming a better teacher requires a great deal of effort to know and understand the subject more, and be willing to change bones behavior in the classroom.

I can't fit laugh!

Of course there's no difference this days with our first class graduates and those who have only waec certificate, sadly our Universities have been reduced to a mere higher certificate receiving institution as they've since failed in instilling true values

As if quota system won't be use in employing the teachers again. You will be surprised when they select someone from Zamfara with 3rd class and leave an applicant from Imo with first class because they need to fulfil federal character requirements.

Even some First Class and Second Class Upper graduates no even know their left from their right. A person's grade doesn't always qualify him or her as intelligent.
If the FG really wants to improve education, they should do these 3 things.:
1. Make education a top priority and invest heavily in it.
2. Eschew the whole "quota system" trash and make sure teachers get the job based on competence.
3. Apply reward mechanism such as scholarships and what have you.
