Lagos Prominent Indigenes Seek End To NURTW Activities by adenigga(m): 6:27am On Nov 15, 2020
A group, under the umbrella of Prominent Indigenes of Lagos, has charged the state government to stop all taxes illegally collected by the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on Lagos roads and give them to local councils, for maintenance of roads, provision of health services, infrastructure and other needs.

In a communiqué issued yesterday, in Lagos and signed by Chief Alaba Williams; the Ajiroba of Lagos, Bashorun Jaiye Randle; Dr. Ade Dosunmu and Convener, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, they also tasked the Federal Government to give direct revenue allocation to local councils in the country, to accelerate grassroots development and youth employment.

“We need a law to be promulgated to provide employment opportunities for our restive youths, at least 30 per cent quota in all the state’s ministries and parastatals and all private institutions that have their headquarters in the state.

“We want justice and fair play for the indigenes as a panacea to peace in the state. We condemn strongly the ongoing compulsory acquisition of our landed property from the indigenes for public uses, only to turn around and illegally allocate them to political stooges and sold at exorbitant prices to others for private use. We want a stop to desecration of our cultural heritage and traditional institutions,” they said.

They called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sign into law without further delay, the e-voting bill, to reduce violence and snatching of ballot boxes during elections, saying it will make votes count and make the elections credible, free and fair.

Of all unions in Nigeria, NURTW is the most rugged and useless of them all .

They're are political tools for our politicians hence, it can never be scrapped and government doesn't want to regulate or checkmate their activities either.

Lagos as a mega city should have done away with the activities of NURTW for long.

It doesn’t befit Lagos having agberos scattered all over everywhere. The transportation in Lagos should be formal

Those nonsense “owo mi da” boys should stop ASAP

The citizens are finding it hard to make ends meet and some lazy drones will wake up in the morning just to harass bus drivers who in turn pour the aggression on innocent commuters

It's baffles one to know that the Government also backs these touting useless union activities!.

which Union are they reorganizing with those set of men?

Before any progress can be made to attain a mega city standard, befitting Lagos, on the activities union of transport workers, majority of those men have to be done away with, which is tantamount to scrapping and establish a new one

Heh, have we done away with our current set of leaders/politicians?

Who are the backers of this NURTW if not the politicians themselves?

Then who should call the short of scrapping?

Stop shifting base.

So the thuggery and menaces the agberos exhibited during the military era were backed by politicians?

We are talking about the “professional” activities of NURTW here.

Nonsense

NURTW is the most useless union in the whole world & contributing biggerly to accident we see on the roads (both highway & local roads)

These NURTW collects high levies from drivers without considering what will be drivers income at the end of the day. Let me use Oshodi as example, over 20 agbero will collect levies from just one driver & in return driver will transfer the aggression on innocent passenger by increasing transportation cost. Now, sometimes when they are trying to collect money by force from drivers it will leads to fight between driver & agbero of which while driver was trying to run away he might drive very tough thereby lead to accident.

Also, they do contribute greatly to most accidents we see on highway due to their excessive charges. Drivers are unable to maintain their vehicle properly due to excessive charges collected by NURTW thereby making the vehicle non road Worthy which in turn leads to accidents

These NURTW don't check veichle Tyre, numbers of passengers, engine conditions, because all they know is for driver to load their buses & they get paid. functions of NURTW is to always check each vehicles doing interstate transport every morning to know the vehicle is in good shape, check Tyre to know it's not expired or worn out, organize seminars for drivers from time to time but they don't do that except to collect money & bounce

cool

NURTW enjoys freedom of association like Nigerian Bar Association, National Union of Teachers... They are duly registered and can levy themselves as they deem fit

If the PDP group wants to end them as they did in Edo and Oyo State, then Hackney permits, LGA taxes can't be collected from them using different agency
