Moremi Statue is the tallest in Nigeria and it is one of the tourist attractions in Ile Ife Osun State. The story behind this place is about a woman known as Moremi Ajasoro who played an important role in Yoruba history. She helped in liberating the people from oppressors. She paid the price with her only child. The people of Ile Ife made a promise to her that they will forever be her children. This is why she is being celebrated to date.

The story behind it is there was this tribe known as the forest people who are always dressed in leaves that comes to attack their villages and kidnap their people. The people have tried so many things to prevent them from invading their villages but nothing worked. SO she approached the gods and the gods offered to help her liberate her people. However, the gods demanded her most precious asset for sacrifice. Without asking, she accepted the offer.
She followed their instructions and allowed herself to be captured by the forest people. After she was captured because of her beauty, the forest KIng couldn't resist her and he married her. This gave her the time to study the people and she learned about their tricks.

She discovered they were not spirits as they thought. They wrap themselves with dried raffia palm. She became part of them. When they were not expecting. She escaped and revealed all the secrets to her husband the King. She told them to attack the village holding a torch. This is why her statue got a torch. So in case you are thinking they copied the statue of liberty, this is the story behind it.

If you are wondering why she is still being celebrated till date, here is it. After Ife defeated the forest people. She went back to the gods to fulfil her vows. She brought some of the finest animals to make sacrifices. The gods rejected it and told her they wanted her most precious asset which is her only son. She cried and pleaded so she had to sacrifice her only child. The entire city mourned with her and told her that henceforth they will all be her children. This is why Queen Moremi Ajasoro stood out of all the Kings in the Yoruba Folklore. To date, the people of Ife still celebrates her and see themselves as her children.

This statue was built exactly at the place where she lived thousands of years ago.

This is the tallest Statue in Nigeria, It was made from locally sourced materials and local artists in Ile Ife. It is 42 feet tall. making it the tallest statue in Nigeria and the fourth in Africa. The statue was built by the Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. He is one of the few Kings in Nigeria passionate about tourism.

It may not be as big as the Statue of Liberty in the United States. But it is a symbol of hope and strength and it shows the huge role women have been making in history.
So I am using this medium to shout out to all the women across the world making our world a better place. God bless you all.

Entry to this place is free, please ensure you tip the caretakers of the place. Let's promote Nigerian tourism.

There are artworks that told the story behind this place

1. The forest people invaded and took the people captives
2. When Queen Moremi was captured
3. The King took her as a wife and showed her all the secrets
4. She went back to her husband and revealed all the secrets

Well, unfortunately, the Government that should be in the forefront of tourism are not really doing much. This was built by the Ooni of Ife. The last part about reading agreements does it relate to this post or just a general advise. Thank you

Well, I celebrate Winston churchill despite the man committing gruesome murder (and being a racist and boorish fellow)because if he hadn't done so, but joined most of the people of his class in calling for peace the whole world would have been under the rule of mass genocidists...wh by the way had some nice plans for us africans that would have made british colonial rule look like the fabled Shangri-la...

If Moremi hadn't done what she did...maybe most of her tribe/region would have been either dead, or in perpetual sllavery

Human history is not perfect. Nigeria in the pre-colonial era was a LAWLESS place. Your village could be raided and everyone killed or enslaved. You did what you had to do to survivie.
