The Federal Government has threatened to sanction a foreign media outlet, CNN, over its report on the alleged shooting of #EndSARS protesters by soldiers at the Lekki toll plaza on October 20, 2020.

The government described the report by the foreign news medium as “irresponsible journalism”.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, made this known on Thursday at a press conference in Abuja. According to him, the briefing was conveyed to address lingering issues regarding the #EndSARS protests for police reform that rocked the nation last month.

He described the event of October 20, 2020 as a “massacre without bodies”, insisting that not a single body has been produced or a single family has come out to claim their family member was killed at the Lekki tollgate.

The minister alleged that CNN relied on social media videos without verification to produce its report. “This should earn CNN a serious sanction for irresponsible reporting,” Mohammed said.

He added that some “unscrupulous persons” including celebrities circulated fake news on the social media that aggravated the violence that trailed the two-week demonstration.

It's unfortunate we are where we are today. Peaceful protest demanding for better governance and brighter life for Nigerian youths turned bloody by the wicked people in government. CNN, after intense investigation came up with facts to support the claim that there was massacre. Only for the heartless people to spew this rubbish rather than put up strong arguments with evidence to refute the claim.

But then this is Nigeria, what should one expect?

There was shooting at Lekki toll gate, no doubt about that, but the question is, who was killed?
There has never been a time in this country where people are killed by the government and no family or friends can come out to say they were killed. This is the defence they put up when we ask them to tell us who was killed. Curious individuals even contributed money as reward for anyone who can come up with at least a verifiable identity of someone killed, all we hear is that the government also wants to kill them.
Same people who were forcing the Buhari is dead and Buhari is a clone theory down our throats now wants is to believe that some unknown persons were massacred by the Nigerian government.

CNN didn't make any claim other than where the video was shot and some witnesses' statements. If you actually read the report, you would see how they avoid inserting themselves into the story to avoid liability. So, I don't see why Lai is asking for a fight.
