So where do we get the money to do all you have said?

Our income for this year is 26 billion naira. We need far more than that to acheive what you want

Almost 80% of that money you mentioned was used for recurrent expenditure. Paying useless salaries and keeping political elites alive.

If this country was normal, our railway won't be used I carrying humans for now. It would be used in carrying agricultural products from the north. Imagine the food products that are wasted in the north. We import almost everything.

See don't create any excuse for our leaders. They're stupid

We don't have these kind of streets in nigeria because we are not ready to pay the kind of taxes that would fund and maintain those kind of streets.

In the UK, if you are living in the city, you pay council tax which ranges from 60000 to 100000 naira monthly depending on the city. That money goes into making the cities look nice

That's why uk cities have great streets.

If we charged that kind of tax in Nigeria, Nigerians would scream.

So we pay scanty taxes and get scanty and bad roads

The bad roads we have in Nigeria are what we can afford. The sad thing is that looting still happens on top

This is the truth Nigerians hate hearing, tell an average citizen to pay tax na fight be that.
For example my landlord has accrued charges worth more than 500,000 from land use charge alone not too talk about the rest.

So when we have used up the looted money to build infrastructure, where do we get the money to keep building more infrastructure and maintain and upgrade exisiting one?

Taxes.
my broda I am not disputing the fact that taxes will help greatly in building and maintaining solid infrastructure in the Long run.

What I am trying to point out to u is that many of these political office holders don't have any vision whatsoever, they obviously have bad intentions towards their country.

For example a vision can go like this this: "every citizen shall have access to quality education"

This will surely have multiplier effect over the passage oftime

Kabul Aghanistan was always developed, it was the war that brought the city to ruins.

I get you. i understand that places like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran etc are ancient civilisations with deep ancient knowledge but the average Nigerian isn’t asking for pedigree. Simple, empty, plastic, superficial, modern cities in the mold of Dubai world suffice. We cant even get this.

Yes u are right .Govt should create an enabling environment for the citizens to strives, and they will be surprised at how high Nigerians can go, if we could just have constant electricity ,good transport system ,tax weavers for new businesses and one digit interest loan rate granted to citizens that are interest in doing business . In fact, govt will have more revenue in taxes than ever before- when these businesses start paying taxes .
I don't know why our leaders are so blind and stupid . Good transport system , constant electricity , One digit interest rate on bank loan , provision of govt business loan to elegible citizens without bias / nepotism .Then they should stand bye and see how this country will strive beyond thier imagination .

They can't think out of the box!!

We don't have good policies on housing and roads and the general environment. You make good policies, you enforce them and you get stuff like this. One more thing, in Nigeria, individuals biuld mainly. As in individuals buy plots of land then build based on different plans. This makes neighbourhoods look haphazardly disorganized..Elsewhere, it's huge companies like Julius Berger and co with all the man power and resources to build beutiful stuffs based on city planning codes.

Houses in capitalist economies are mainly built by real estate companies who borrow from banks to build in order to meet the housing needs. You should be more worried if the citizens will have enough savings to embark on a mortgage scheme that will help them own a house and make the real estate business profitable for operators..

Sometimes the thing that gets me about Nigeria city environments, the unacceptableness of the thing, is the squalor you get in all the states, in all the cities. It always amazes me how nations even more impoverished than Nigeria can manage to seem somewhat habitable given their circumstance in the form of wars, poverty and what not and yet comparable places in Nigeria can seem nightmarish by contrast, uninhabitable even at a crunch.

See war-torn Afghanistan as an example:

No place in Nigeria should look as bad as those images of Aba market, places in Lagos and all over Nigeria often posted on Niaraland. These issues go beyond corruption; these are issues of rank ignorance and the simple inability of too many of those in position of power in Nigeria.

Technological innovations and mechanism to build them in quantities is difficult, symmetrical cities, pavements, roads, trees and maintaining them –essentially the business of bricks and mortar is not.

Internet is really helping to open our eyes to see how backward and underdeveloped we are. As we continue to get angry and ask questions, it will eventually rub off and put the looters under serious pressure to do the right thing. However, we Nigerians also need a paradigm change, we don't value aesthetics at all. Planting trees, flowers and grasses can be quite affordable even to a poor person, but you will see Nigerians driving good cars yet living in terrible environments.

This picture you posted of Afghanistan, looks very much like Aba or Onitsha except that the Afghan city has more trees but the ironical thing is that while Aba and Onitsha are in the rainforest belt where trees can easily thrive, Afghanistan on the other hand is a desert country.

Poverty also plays a role, we can't be wretched and poverty stricken and still have decent looking neighborhoods. It's simply not possible because poverty breeds decay, ignorance, lack of exposure and backwardness.

The worst thing is that Nigeria is not even making any progress, instead we are retrogressing very fast while the rest of the world keeps advancing. What this means in essence, is that in the next 10 to 20 years, we will still be like this or even worse while the rest of the world would have improved massively on the amazing ones they already have.

Check Northern Nigeria and see the indexes coming out from there and you will know that we are in grave danger as a nation. The North may soon start facing acute food shortages and widespread violence, then what hope do they have?

Nigeria is in serious trouble.

Abuja is nice, can be much better. There is no central water system, sewage treatment, 24 hour electricity though better than everywhere in the country.
