I cannot count the number of graduates/undergraduates we train annually.

One of our major problem in Nigeria is “We have too many educated illiterates.”

The future is bleak unless we invest heavily in our young ones. It’s not all about the useless feeding programmes.

_______

Pic 1 & 2 - This is the true state of the nation.

If government should arrest those empowering young ones with basic skills, what should happen to those producing unemployable graduates?
the earlier we face reality, the better for us

Yes
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by QSFemi(m): 6:35am On Dec 19, 2020
Quantity Surveyors are the only professionals whose training adequately qualify them for costing or estimating construction costs. Of course, there are other people who parade themselves, albeit by impersonation, as capable of preparing Bill of Quantity. This is very wrong in its entirety.

Quantity Surveyors offer you an independent cost assessment of your proposed projects without any strings attached (by not deliberately inflating the figure for selfish gain).

As regards the location of the project, a quantity surveyor that knows his onions shouldn't have any problem in offering you a realistic, dependable and workable BOQ. Market Survey can always be done within the location of the project and yes, such QS doesn't need to travel down there to get that done. This is 2020. We're all connected.

Good morning.

Ndyoo:
Can an engineer do the bill of quantities? Must it be a quantity surveyor? If it must be a quantity surveyor can someone recommend me one specific for the southeast region. I hope the person has experience on the cost of things in South East because I think these things vary from region to region as I can see from example that the cost of a bag of cement is not the same everywhere.

But I noticed you didn't mention sharp sand as one of the materials required to produce the stones. Is sand optional?

Pls is the statement true , won't I regret it and also will longspan aluminum good on it .
Am open to various suggestion
Thanks all
Cc : Elder Ogunmogaji
Elder Haji Mufutau
Next agba DIY

Its cheaper and doesnt get eaten by termites.

But aesthetically, it doesnt look good. Its spongy and turns black-ish.

When I was Mr. Americana I hated to see young people on my sites. I felt it wasn’t a good move because I was measuring things with an American yardstick.

After I became tenured on the ground then I started seeing a lot of things differently.

That kid at the construction site could as well be the bread winner for his family. There are lots of complicated and maddening circumstances in Nigeria.

What I do is ensure that young folks are not tasked beyond their capacity and they get an education. Let me explain. For example I taught one to know why they count number of pans.

The younger folks get extra cash from me directly at the end of the day.

The numbskuls making laws up and down are consciousless twits who are isolated from the realities on the ground. I don’t use those as justification.

Most of the self made millionaires in the USA are trade people.

Please don’t quote me as I didn’t quote anybody. I have running stomach grin

I think we are mixing child labour with "child work training". The difference is "choice".

I can take my child to site to take measurements. My baba bricklayer brings his children during holidays to site.

Child labour is when the child doesn't have a choice and has to do hard labour to survive.

Child hard labour is still bad. It will always be. But because of the peculiar nature of our dysfunctional society, we are seeing it as not a big deal.

None of us here will allow our 8 year old child to go and carry concrete or blocks.

You can combine apprenticeship and education. After school, I used to go n meet my Dad at work.

I see a future where the the criteria for employment will be solely based on what skill you have.

Acquire a skill now, just like our people say.... It's easier to acquire education at young age than at older age

Education is not only for certificates and employment.
Education is for the development of the human person, his intellect and general awareness of his surroundings.
A skilled millionaire who is a social misfit is of no use to the society.
Let everyone be able to read, write, speak and think/reason in at least one language.

That's the challenge I have with my POP guy.

He says some things that are insulting (what yoruba call apàra). I do confront him and he apologizes for not understanding how to communicate.

He's from Benin republic too and the over 7 boys he brought are from his country, not working with Nigerians

This reminded me of the sordid event that happened to one of my big aunties and her 2 boys in 2002 who lost their lives during a fire outbreak at their residence in Bodija, Ibadan.

All these people shouting child labour are either living in Lagos or Abuja and don't know shit about what is happening in Nigeria.

I have a non for profit school in a northern Nigerian village.

After school I encourage my kids most of whom are under 12 to go and learn something.
My dad has fixed about 5 of them in different vocations. From mechanic to tailor etc.
I am looking for a solution for the girls
1. most of them will never graduate or even attend secondary school.
2. Their parents don't have the ability so set up a business or send them for further schooling

So it's either they learn one or two things from now that they are still young or they end up been kidnappers and thieves in the next 10years.

I doubt if our country will ever be better than these. Not just our present leaders, the next set of leaders are equally thieves. 95 percent of people you see out there will steal when place Inna position of power.
So this country's future is bleak.

That's why I don't blame people that are into cybercrime.
The country has failed everyone, if those guys are not doing what they are doing, lol my brother, they will be going from house to house stealing.

I am not endorsing fraud

But it is the plain truth. Especially for those that are doing it and channeling it into business to create employment for others. Cc invictus

I wonder why states are not pouring resources into technical and agricultural schools

There is no way you can cater for these population of you don't make half of your population go to compulsory technical agricultural schools. (Primary/secondary)
