Nigeria is in the mess it is in for the following reasons: 1. Nigeria was artificially put together by the european without any regards for the indigenous people's differences in culture, language, cultural values, religious beliefs, mindset, etc. 2. The people who inhabit Nigeria today never asked to share a country together. This was imposed on them by the european colonialists. As a result, we have a whole bunch of people who have little or nothing in common with each other culturally speaking, having to share a country together that they never agreed to. Can you imagine throwing the Germans, the french, the polish, the russians, the romanians, the Irish, the norwegians, the portuguese and the spaniards together and forcing them all to share one country? What do you think would have happened? Especially, when the aforementioned groups never agreed to such an arrangement? Well, that is what was done to we Nigerians and other African nationals. Until we as a people understand the damaging effects colonialism has had on us as a people, we will keep running around in circles. The white man knew exactly what he was doing when he forced different African ethnicities who are not culturally, linguistically or otherwise compatible with each other to share a country together. We were set up to fail from the start. Think am lying? Why does it make europeans and their descendants nervous when Africans talk about wanting an ethnically monotonous nation? Like say, a nation of all Yorubas or Igbos or Madinkas, or Luos, or Ashanti, or Akan or Zulus or Hausas? Because they know that once a group of people who culturally and otherwise have a lot in common unite towards a common vision and goal, they will be unstoppable and the rise of the African race will be the demise of the european race. Why does europe supply weapons to African leaders to use against African ethnic groups wishing to breakaway and form their own nation? Think about it. The problem is, many of you were never taught history in school or even in the home, and you would rather spend all your leisure time on social media rather than read and educate yourselves about your historical past. This is the reason why many of you suffer from an identity crisis, a lack of knowing thyself, a lack of self esteem, not knowing your self worth and looking up to another race of people for love and acceptance. The same group of people who enslaved you, colonized you, have hated you from day one and continue to hate you. The same group of people who instruct your corrupt leaders to oppress you. As a group, Africans lack a sense of direction, be it the ones on the Continent of Africa or the ones in the diaspora. If you are waiting for the same people who enslaved and colonized you to come and solve your myriads of problems, then I am afraid, you will be waiting forever. Once upon a time, Africans were a great people. We had different empires and invented great things. But then, the europeans arrived, and told us our way of doing things is primitive. The european gave us his names, forced his culture and language on us and stripped us from whom we are or were as a people. Notice, that if Asian countries like Japan or even China had allowed colonialists to do to them what they did to we Africans, those nations will not be where they are today. When will Africans wake up? The solutions to our problems lie in our hands. Stop waiting for the caucasian to save you. 3. The lackadaisical attitude of Nigerians. As a people, we have sat and watched a small yet powerful set of Nigerians in positions of influence, affluence and authority run the country to the ground. We sit there and say stupid things like "It is well," "God will help us," and so on forgetting that God helps those who make an attempt to help themselves. God has blessed Nigeria with fertile soil, good weather, a large population, mineral resources, no hurricanes, earthquakes, wild fires or other natural disasters, etc. So what more do Nigerians want? Yet, due to our unnecessary and misplaced hate for one another, we can't even use what God gave us to make something out of our nation and improve the lives of the citizens. Nigerians will kiss the feet of the chinese, lebanese, indian and white man while simultaneously treating everyone who is a black African with disdain. It's shameful. Do you think a german in germany will treat another german with disdain while elevating you an African on their own soil? It can never happen but that is the crap that goes on in Nigeria and one of the many reasons why people like me left Nigeria and have no intentions of returning. Nigeria is the only country I have lived in where you turn on the radio and the people speaking on the radio airwaves are speaking with an American accent, British accent, sometimes a mixture of both, but hardly with the accent of the land, the Nigerian accent. Self hatred runs deep amongst most Nigerians and I had no choice but to separate myself from such group of people. Is it any wonder why Nigeria is a mess? |

Development is independent of these points. All these can be said of many countries that are far advanced than Nigeria. Nigeria is among of the most underdeveloped countries and is the world capital of poverty. Per capita income is low. There are no excuses. We know the problems and we need to fix them. dasparrow: |

tstx:Give credits the black south Africans too, it's just unfair to attribute all success to the whites, after the black government took over, they improved on so many areas, expanded cities, built good roads etc. And what do you mean by no country run by black can progress? Some of these southern African countries are fairing well, with the right people in leadership, even Nigeria will do exceedingly better. |

frog12:Don't mind ignorant folks jare, our major problem especially on Nigeria is that no one minds their business but always wanting to interfere in other men's matters. If all ethnicities in Nigeria can be allowed to govern themselves properly and not some folks wanting to determine how others should live their lives, we will grow. In a place like switzerland those ethnicities do not unnecessarily interfere in each other matters same with the UK, where scotland, northern Ireland and wales still govern themselves differently but are still together as UK. There's too much interference in nigerian ethnicities reason for all the fights and tension among the different tribes leading to lack of trust. |

codemaniacs:If you work in Zenith Bank/Access Bank and you work in Standard Chartered, only you will come and tell me the difference in terms of governance and mindset. Covenant and Bowen compared to University of Pretoria? Of all the food places mentioned, not sure anyone is really thriving. They have all gone down from their heights 10years ago. Partly economy ,but partly management. As 'good' as some of our private schools are, let your kids school abroad for 3 years and you will likely see a big difference in confidence and extra curricular capabilities. Dangote is only surviving because he brought in Indian COO. That was the smartest thing he ever did. If he had put his children there ,it would have been the endbof his business, particularly after him. |

Yeah there is corruption everywhere but in other countries the people in government put good infrastructures and policies in place to cover up for their corruption but in Nigeria the oga nla of corruption our leaders don't really care about their reputation or legacy , so all they do is build very low quality infrastructure and policies that would only last while they are in office that's why you see most government buildings built over 30 years ago still standing but buildings built just 5 years ago are already crumbling. Besides this , since the leaders no longer hide their corruption , we all see it as a norm so EVERYONE IS NOW CORRUPT |

I do not have an IG account, this comment would be better siuted there, back to the issue. The major problem with Nigeria that actually breeds the ones mentioned by the OP is : We appreciate bad, corrupt attitudes and people more than good ones. That is why they keep producing corrupt people to lead and under develop their land - check their leaders from their history as a people. They prefer to Support their own person that is bad and corrupt than to support someone else that is upright. How many of you reading this can stand to support your own brother that has integrity (although not rich) instead that corrupt but rich one ? Nigerians cannot stand up against evil and corruption because most of them are into it too. The few that .can do so are shouted down by thesame People clamouring for good leaders and development. Instead of us to stand and fight against these corrupt people headlong (paying the utmost sacrifice) by telling our self the truth, support people with integrity, good values, and competence, not at all, we run to other civilized nations (where they have paid the utmost price for standing against corruptions). We act like cowards, and now many nations are chasing out Nigerians (craftily telling them to go repair their own country). Even many of the people running out do so by many/any dubious means. Condemn internet fraud and many are ready to tear you to streads. This preference for corrupt attitudes is one major reason why Nigeria is backward inspite of her huge resources. We cannot fight the corrupt father, leaders, chief, pastors, traditional ruler either because of ethnic, blood, religious affiliations or because our hands already are soiled too, so if you make Pim ! They will bring out your dirty linen. Until we begin to pay the utmost price of standinding up to what is right and good starting from our very homes and community to the top We cannot develop as Nigeria, we may need to split the country for this to occur. |

codemaniacs:Sorry I did not respond earlier to your noble submission. It is not totally true that Nigeria did not have all you said setup by the British. Who says we did not have roads, industries, daycare, schools, Healthcare setup by the British? Do you know that even in the 30ies the regions where already being developed? My father and his boss drove all over the country to as far as Cameroon by roads in the later 50ies and 60ies. The malls were there Utc etc. Of course they set up what was required for the population and projected growth just as they did in South Africa etc. Industries were setup, schools, healthcare. Do you know even in the 30ies you had a middle class, lawyers, civil servants, doctors etc. Farming with proper production chain was available. Processing of cattle and let me shock you, pork ie pigs was done in the North (try that now if you wount be beheaded). Peoperly butchered, processed, frozen, put in trains to factories in Lagos where they were turned into meat products like sussages, ham, bacon, steak etc. Even the textile factories of kano etc were all there. We as Nigerians after rushing to independence did not sustain the growth for more than 10-20 years before the downwards spiral. Kindly visit YouTube and research videos of Nigeria right from 1900 to post independence ie 1960s and you will wonder where Nigeria would have been if we got it right. I will add one for you to watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9bgPk3GN4A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87FN4Y_Cpig |
