Sorry I could only supply a few people. My apologies. And to those who got the goats, I wouldn't mind if you keep us abreast with updates.

Much love.

Happy New Week All

I will be spending most of my week with my goats. Time to do it the right way. If left to keep free ranging, I don't see my plantain farm surviving this harmattan season.

My goats don turn wild animal grin grin grin. I literally have to start searching for them in the bush. Only the ducks came to say Hi; my goats tear race enter bush on sighting me... Hahahahahaha. I guess they think I dey come pick them sell again.

Glad to know this thread is very much alive. Bro you have inspired me to start goat farming.. I bought 2 WAD goats on 12th Dec. and have placed order for one more. My mum has 1 doe which kidded twin on 15th Nov. (a buckling and a doeling) this was her first pregnancy. So these will form my starting herd. Though I intend breeding them with the Maradi goat buck which I'll buy when he is needed or a month prior.

Feeding the Goats

Yesterday's activities was quite hectic and tiring. Indeed, I now believe one of the greatest insult you can insult any human with is saying; You are a goat. Settling the goats in was a bit of a task but, they are doing fine now.

Now the question is What to feed my goats?
There's the erroneous assumption that a goat will eat virtually anything that comes its way, ranging from grasses, bread, leftover from the kitchen... even paper and plastics etc. Nope!! Goats are very selective in their eating. More to the Deer than to the cattle. So I intend giving my goats a perfect balanced diet meal plan.

Today, I would be visiting Alaba Rago to get Hay sacks for my goats. Other food supplements would be gotten even as I seek advises from the Hausa's in the Rago Market.

More updates later!!!
you should have seek the advice first from the guys at alaba rago first before buying the goats

28th Decembeeeeeeer!!! Whhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyy!!!

It's a mixed feeling for me this very day, should i be happy or be sad? I wasn't expecting this, but it happened all the same. Patra, the pregnant goat I was hoping to sell off as soon as possible just kidded a couple of hours ago. Just when I was thinking of downsizing drastically, another triplets have been added to the family, guuush!!!
To make matters worse, all the other goats are pregnant!!! cry cry

Good news anyways, their new home is about 87% ready. I should be through with the fencing today.

Names for the new additions loading!!! (That's my best part about deliveries) grin grin

Wow, congratulations. This herd of yours sure know how to multiply. Here is a picture of my starting herd 4 grown goats with a twin born by one. Talking about goats, I was tasked with killing a sokoto red goat at my kinsmen meeting on 26th after killing and roasting I found out the goat had twins in it, fully furred kids a male and female, it was probably days from kidding. The stuff still torments me. Wish I knew earlier I for take excuse, go buy replacement goat for them b4 meeting start.

Sorry about the experience, but it's a common occurrence with slaughtering of female goats.
Nevertheless, you should be able to know if a doe is pregnant or not with time.

Thanks @ the congratulations. grin

Since u have space, find and plant some of those leguminous trees. It will help a lot during dry season.

Re: My Goat Farm Startup (my Diary) by MGeey(f): 3:22pm On Dec 30, 2020
What a pleasant read! thanks for this. This business has been in my mind for a long time now. The plots i have is not fenced
round and that's what i want to do first.

Please do the goats sleep in the open? if yes, what about when it rains?

If they don't sleep in the open, may i see a picture of where they sleep please?

Definitely YES! In setting up your goat pen, you also have to put up a house for shelter against rains and harsh weather.

I'll give you a rough estimate of what I bought

1. Galvanized nets as seen in the picture. 15metres length & 6 feet high = N17,000 ( I made use of 3.
2. Binding wire = (N2,000)
3. Bag of cement = N3,300
4. I paid wielder to help me cut and wield the gate.= N3,500

That's all it took me to make the fence.

Note: The fence was mapped to an existing blocked fence. So I needed nets for just two sides.
