Because Nigerians only go to see a dentist when the situation is already very critical and the only solution at such extreme times will be extraction. If we make it a habit to go for dental checks, we won't have to solve a problem when the only solution to it will be extraction 3 Likes |

Op, If you read through this thread with an unbiased mind, you will see why Nigerians usually need to have extractions eventually. Poor dental health awareness, some are even boasting about using herbs and broken down teeth that no longer hurt and one aunty was talking about removing worms. Many Nigerians don't like dental clinics for several reasons, many opt for herbs, people put petrol, aspirin, garlic and just yesterday I saw someone that put aboniki- yes aboniki in a painful tooth (and no, it didn't get better) Now root canal treatments are expensive, the cost ranges from 15,000-50,000 for one tooth and usually such teeth need to be crowned so they don't break later (a good porcelain fused to metal crown costs 35,000 and above even in Government hospitals) Tha brings the total amount for saving a tooth to about 50,000- 85,000 instead of an extraction that usually costs 5,000- 15,000 and up to 50,000 for impacted teeth. Please ask yourself, how many Nigerians can afford such? Many Nigerians argue about opening cards (just 1,500-2,000 o) Root canals pay the dentist financially, don't you think they would be more interested in doing them? The way some of you think ehn, using Nairaland as a study on the average Nigerian, it makes one almost lose hope in this country as even we the youths are not helping matters. You would expect someone misinformed or poorly informed to try to inform themselves, Google is there after all but no, not my people. We will all be alright last last. By the way, this year 2021, take better care of your mouths, see a dentist once in a while (prevention and early care save teeth- and lives), learn to brush properly as poor brushing techniques and hard bristled brushes wear the teeth down, less carbonated and sugary drinks and foods too. Help yourselves, don't expect others to save you if you are not willing to be saved 13 Likes 4 Shares |

gaeul: Not all teeth can be restored, I wonder if you would be brave enough to take a picture of the tooth in question and post here. If you had gone to the clinic early enough, before you started having pain from the tooth, you could have filled it- and for only 5,000- 10,000, no pain and the procedure is barely 15 minutes. I have had a filling in my upper left last molar since 2016, I noticed it was always sensitive while brushing. I had it filled, I check it constantly, I have my teeth cleaned regularly too and I haven't had any issues since. If you are also not satisfied with the care you received, you can seek a second opinion- more opinions even. If you also have enough money and are willing to take a bet on that tooth, I am sure you may find a dentist that may help out (a Teaching Hospital maybe) 4 Likes |

Omoslim26: I don't see how this is funny honestly, in saner climes, such won't happen. If anyone feels they are not satisfied with any treatment option, why not seek a second or third opinion. The dentist was there to help and do his/her job. It is well- or not |

zedegit: It costs much less sir, extractions are cheap and your tooth turning brown should spur you to go and have it checked. Next thing you know, it could become loose (start shaking) and fall out while chewing agege bread or soft dodo next Sunday or in 2023, or 2035. Then you will remember this thread and come back here to wail about how your turn has come and the evil naija dentist train has hit you 1 Like 1 Share |

Grandmeister: Sorry about this but it is very rare for an extraction to lead to death, so maybe you want to flesh up your story a bit? It is either she had hemophilia and bled out without receiving proper care or the problematic tooth already caused Ludwig's angina and she already had septicemia. Yes, holes in teeth can kill sometimes. Sorry again 3 Likes |

Angelfrost: Fun fact, taking calcium frequently makes the bone more dense and hence teeth are more difficult to remove when they eventually need to be extracted from lack of timely, adequate professional DENTAL care. Enough Calcium is usually gotten through our diet, if anyone needs calcium supplements, it should not be because one or two teeth have holes. You are welcome. 2 Likes |

Chii59: I am so sorry about that ma'am It is either they were not properly done or the positions of those holes are complicating things, especially if they are at the edge of the tooth or the holes are quite large. Please see your dentist, it was done just three months ago and they are already out- you may not need to pay again. Or get a second opinion. You may also need to get permanent dental crowns after they are well filled the next time, they are pricey but with that you may have some peace of mind. Please don't wait too long so the teeth won't start hurting and you may now need extractions or root canal therapies, biko 1 Like

Because they love using plier to remove teeth (quote author=gaeul post=97881174]I honestly don't know of it's Laziness or what but Nigeria Doctors always go for the last option which is Extraction. They would rather opt for Extraction and would never suggest root canal treatment, even if a person have removed 4teeths, they will still opt for Extraction. Most developed country would be happy to do all they can and when there is no way out again before they opt for Extraction. Keeping as much natural teeth as possible is the best, why then do Nigeria dentist always opt for Extraction? Sadly, if you insist on restorative measures, the will tagged you stubborn patient. Tired much.
|

Dentists all around the world suggest extractions and not just the Nigerian ones. Abroad, it's for the $$$. I don't know about those in naija. 1 Like |

I got to the university dental clinic and there were literally 400 patients waiting for care. I got there around 8am and did not get to my turn until about 4.30.pm. Bless you doc! Thank you for putting it out there for us. E nor easy. Dem no too dey hear word but blame it on the dentist and not tooth prognosis or patient availability for treatment or patient's affordability. Na wa! The comments just made me weak. This post reeks of ignorance. Here I am, currently battling with multiple RCT patients and people are here yapping balls, saying it's only extraction we were taught in school. How many people person wan educate like this? It's bad enough that dental awareness is terrible in Nigeria. We now still have to battle with people who think like this? Hian! This post and the comments reeks of ignorance and it is deeply nauseating. yeye dey smell. Issshh. Make I just jump and waka pass abeg. I no dey read comments again. I'm weary of dentists. They get paid based on the procedures they do. Some scam the patients and recommend unnecessary procedures. Always get a 2nd opinion. |
