Court sentences Nigerian soldier to death by firing squad for killing colleague

The court-martial sitting in Maiduguri, Borno State capital has sentenced Trooper Azunna Maduabuchi to death by firing squad.

Maduabuchi was sentenced for killing the adjutant of his unit, one Lieutenant Babakaka Ngorgi.

Trooper Maduabuchi was arraigned for murder after shooting Lieutenant Ngorgi in July 2020 at close range in Bama Local Government of Borno State for refusing to grant him a welfare pass.

He was on Tuesday sentenced to death by firing squad after he was found guilty at the court session held at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.

Four other soldiers arraigned for manslaughter were sentenced to various years of imprisonment. Sergeant Sani Ishaya was sentenced to four years, Bidemi Fabiyi sentenced to two years while Private Musa Bala and Private Abdulraheed Adamu were sentenced to one-year imprisonment.

Another soldier Mohammed Kudu was sentenced to three years imprisonment shooting a 12-year-old boy at a wedding.

Lance Corporal Aja Emmanuel arraigned for a lone charge of assault has been de-ranked and now a private soldier.

The arraignment and sentencing of the erring soldiers is in accordance with Section 106 of the Armed Forces Act.

If you hadn’t enlisted in the army, would this have happened to you? Thank God you enlisted, cos it’s obvious you lack anger management, therefore you belong not to the civilian society. Only God knows the number of innocent lives you would have wasted. Rip to the deceased you killed & rip to you in advance. I am not rejoicing over your sentence. It just the best I could give before your demise.

Several factors came into play.

1. His tribe

2. His rank. (He's a non Commissioned officer). NCOs in the Nigerian army are treated like nothing.

3. He killed a senior officer, his superior. That's a very grave offence.

Charged with manslaughter was given one year imprisonment!!!

I hate been or sounding tribalistic but giving death sentence to the only South Easterner(he deserves it of he's really guilty) and giving very light sentences to others especially of northern extraction where given very light sentences for manslaughter speaks volume of the kind of injustice in our nation.

It's really funny how they were quick to sentence the Ibo guy to death by firing squad

I think in a sane country, there should be an appeal... I really don't know much about the law. But it's really funny how the Hausa guy who killed a 12year child was only given a 3year jail term...

I guess the law only favors the northerns
