What Kind Of Sickness Is This? Please Help! by dboY1123(m): 2:24am On Jan 13, 2021
please I beg of you, what can you suggest we do, because we have been to a General Hospital in Lagos and there has been little or no improvement at all, we bought the drugs she was administered and did checkup at the hospital, but this sickness still persists!

It starts with coughing and generates to difficulty breathing, sweating as well, she becomes restless and it lasts for like 3hours when it's 3am or 4am, she gets better and better till the morning.. As i am typing this!(02:10am) we just left her room.... It happens twice a week and at times more, always in the middle of the night.

I beg of you, please what can we do? I am not asking for money, i just want her to be fine

Please, help me push this to front page I beg you in the name of God, you could save a life.

No, sir or ma, it is not covi 19.. It happens only in the middle of night and we have visited the General Hospital before corona started last year in Nigeria.. Her coughing is not much, it is when the thing wants to start she coughs.
Thanks for your concern

I am not a doctor but I have seen this before, difficulties In breathing, coughing without mucus, sweating, unable to lie down flat on your back, unable to hold down urine and collapse of vein at chronic stage.
Pls and pls don't joke with this you have to take her to a specialist hospital with a cardiologist if possible, they will run an x-ray and ECG on her and start proper treatment. I am in no condition a doctor but don't let it get to the chronic stage and make sure she gets enough of fresh air, avoid smokes and dusts as the attack is being triggered.
Pls tk care and all the best .

You do understand you are on Nairaland where a Mechanic can criticise prescribtions from a Medical Doctor.

I am sorry to hear about your predicaments. You mentioned she in your write up thus I am guessing the patient is most likely your daughter. You left out many vital information. How old is she? Did you see a specialist for her condition. If she is a baby in this case a pediatrician.

I didn't read you mention a fever. During these episodes does she get a fever? How long has this been? Did the medications prescribed give some temporal relief. Which medications were prescribed. What tests did you do and what was the doctors diagnosis.?

Despite all the information you will get on this thread a good hospital and specialist is still the best bet for your child's health. The symptoms you gave are generalised vague symptoms that need other physical and medical acessments to give a proper diagnosis.

Was your baby routinely vaccinated for DPT and BCG.? Is there a tuberculosis patient in the family. Have screenings for HIV been done.? Any history of asthma in the family?

With the symptons you gave which like I said will need other additional accesment, a doctor will be looking at Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, Asthma, Foreign Object Inhalation, Heart Failure etc.

Each of the above can only be investigated in a hospital and not on nairaland. Several other factors in addition to what you gave can only be noticed by a trained medical practitioner. Tachycardia, wheezing, oxygen saturation, feeding or drinking, fever, chest movements, breathing rate, swollen abdomen etc.

No sir/ma, she's my mother, and she's 67 years old.
We don't have history of HIV, asthma or tuberculosis. It is a strange sickness.
I took her to general hospital early last year, they did tests on her, like sugar test and scan. But the drugs they administered at the hospital was not effective enough.

My sister being a nurse, suggested it could be asthma, and the drugs she prescribed for her was franol, superpet, procasonone.. She takes it when she wants to sleep and it works temporarily, it doesn't work perfectly for it still,
I went to get the drugs for her this morning, although it has been long she took the drugs, because someone said it was chronic typhoid and we treated her of typhoid last month, she has stopped using the drugs until now that the sickness resurfaced again last night 11:45pm to 2am.. And once it is 3 to 3 and half hours, it reduces and vanishes eventually.

Thanks for your concern sir/ma

You welcome sir, I can't say as only upon consultation with a specialist will you know the exact test followed by medication to be administered, no matter what don't just take her to any random hospital or nurse.

Chronic typhoid...Hmmm...

In the absence of an age in your previous post I thought the patient is a baby. With regards to the medications from the hospital sometimes it takes a while for things to get normal. How soon did you guys stop the medication prescribed by a doctor. She would be better off seing an Internist. (Specialist for adult illnesses).

I am not familiar with two of the medications your sister prescribed. Procasonone and Superpet look like Nigerian brand names. I am from Cameroon. I am familiar though with franol which is Ephredine hcl amd Theophylline..

Please if you share the names of the medications prescribed in the hospital by the doctor I should be able to get a better idea of the suspicion and diagnosis of the doctor.

Asthma or Heart failure comes to mind. Are her legs swollen especially around the ankle.
A more effective medication for adult Asthma is a discus called Seretide. However I can't say if your mum actually has asthma. Please do share the names of the meds prescribed at the hospital.

It could be symptoms of athsma, sometimes it doesn't have to be when someone has asthma in your family b4 u get it, because it happen to so many people, I am talking from experience because it happened to someone.

During the case of that person, it started with heart burn like ulcer then later on, the person use to get attack for like 30 to 40minutes for that day until tomorrow again at thesame time mostly in the evening, then it start to skip after some days either in the late evening or night.

The very time they got to realize that it was asthma, the person had attack from 2am till morning and when taken to the hospital because the person was still on attack when they got to the hospital, the doctors did their diagnosing and realized it was athsma because they gave the person that injection they use to give asthmatic patients so after few minutes he got relief.
For all these while any time the person go to the hospital after they do their tests they couldn't figure out what exactly the problem is until when the person was on attack and luckily at moment they reached the hospital.
