Like Doc mentioned, there are other qualities other than just being solid in front of the backline.

Can he find searching passes accross the midfield?
How does he function when opponents forms low block.
Is he good on the ball?
There is a big difference between playing in a team with double pivot and one that will try to unlock defence, we are complaining of AWB's attacking ability because he plays for Man utd, if he plays in West Ham everybody will be hailing him

4 times out of possible 8 since he joined the team in Jan 2020 and that is super impressive when you consider that Aguero has the most wins with 7, and he has been at Ciry since 2011.

Replacing Matic will be very difficult, people sometimes do not see the most important side of Matic's game. He is very press resistant, excellent passing range and takes up intelligent positions in the midfield.

As pointed out by Doc we must not sign a CDM that is not used to playing alone, covering spaces, playing progressive passes in a high to mid bloc system.

Mind game is one of the tools in EPL if you can't do it on the pitch, you've to learn how to talk subtly with the media so that what you can't achieve on the pitch, you've created an environment for you to thrive. That's why José Mouhinro is good at. Take a jab at your opposition, talk to your team to play dirty or provoke someone then leave the rest to the referee and fans to decide.

Olè is learning his ways. At least, he will tell us to be expecting VdB, Mata and Ighalo to play just to confuse media, opposition team and fans only for you to see Matic, James and Cavani.

My bad, I thought he did. The midfield was well co-ordinated. Trossard and co (that left footed RW, is it Tau?) just decided to be unfortunate on that day.

Very diffficult to get a 8/10 DM like Matic, the only thing missing in his game is speed......his excellent positioning covers that.

DM is the hardest position in football, so it's normal not to have world-class DMs available in the transfer market.

Percy Tau was quite good in that game, It was Trossard and Davy Propper that played nonsense. I still don't understand how Trossard is playing regularly for an EPL team, dude is at best Championship level a lá Dan James.

I trust our scouts and data science team will come up with an excellent CM that can do an excellent job. I like Ibrahima Diallo at Southampton but he is quite green and needs to show more in the next 18 months.

I’m surprised at his performance. Maybe he was good in the past or something or they don’t have a proper replacement.

Trossard killed many attacks yesterday and was generally rubbish. Tau himself didn’t start the game well with his misplaced passes and whatnot but he grew into it.

Maybe we shouldn't copy other team's setup and play as we want?

Moreover, Pep usually plays Rodri at CDM and supports him with 2 8s- Gundogan, Foden, or KdB. He only sacrifices one of the midfield positions for another DM (Fernadinho) when he perceives that the opposition will be tough.


Man Utd have been using a midfield duo since SAF's days with one of them more advanced than the other but currently we don't have the personnel to play like that. And it doesn't make sense to use two players to shield the defence AND play out from the back only when one player can perform that duty. The extra player who partners this mobile, agile DM can contribute more offensively against parkdebus teams.

If McFred can shield the defence, play out effectively from the back and distribute the ball very well there won't be a problem. Same with the Matic-Pogba combo.

If Pogba and Matic are as mobile and agile as McFred, there'd be no problem. Same with if McFred have the passing quality and creativity of Matic-Pogba.
