East Africa is proving to be a boon for Katmerciler. First Uganda and now Kenya.
I feel bad for the guys at OTT: their proposal won the technical evaluation, but lost on the financing of the deal. Between the SA government and the private banks, they really need to wake up and realise structuring finance deals for the defence industry is an imperative.

I feel like SA governments from Zuma to Ramaphosa don't think Defence spending is important, or most likely they consider SA defence industry to be a remnant of apartheid.

The location of South-Africa, the ending of high intensity American wars in Iraq & Afghanistan hasn't helped either.

Chinese defence exports have grown exponentially.

Smaller Nations like UAE, Turkey, are now spending more and more in their defence industries while growing influences in many areas of the developing world.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to compete, on the one hand I blame the government in RSA, on the other, the UAE is spending 23 billion dollars on defence, Turkey between 11 & 13 billion dollars, and quite a chunk go to local companies.

You also add the fact that both governments actively finance foreign sales, also pay top dollar to attract skilled manpower from abroad.

It's a tough road for South-Africa, it doesn't help that the Badger program is routinely delayed either.

I also feel like product advertising from SA is low.

The government needs to increase defence spending, assist in financing, SA companies also need to advertise more.

Majority of the vehicles deployed are either light armored(phantom II) or old MRAPs/APC(Bigfoot/Spartans). Looking at the attacks from the Airforce too, they depend heavily on rockets and canons.
I feel the military is trying to cut cost as much as possible.

Well, I hope you're right.

LTGEN:

Let put a contrary opinion to that last statement about the NAF cutting costs ( not defending them) I kept quiet on the last two videos that the NAF released .
MARTE :
This was brutal to watch and the aftermath showed why they used the 500 kg napalm bombs that was to send an extra ordinary message one picture showed the insidious nature of napalm burned to the skeleton ( 2 bh kia)
TIMBUKTU triangle
At first it showed some rockets being aimed closed to the vehicles ( missing on purposes?) no this was for shrapnel purposes to maim not to kill thereby a liability for bh
In the same video the next strafe it got the next set of vehicles ( spot on) i have also seen some gun trucks with not bullet holes/ cannon but shrapnel that has torn through them.
My critique of the NAF is this :
Not enough MI-171 E
They don't have any future plans to buy the MI-28. This is what they should be planning for ( The future).
the Weapons NAF mi35m dispersed In marte was only cannons... No bomb dropped or rocket

With the way the SA Government embarassed Nigeria during the arms saga i would be wary buying anything from them seriously

LTGEN:

Two scenarios:
1) It is very likely the BIG foot came with a revised contract for spares after the BUHARI ADMIN came to power.
2) After the REVAS were bought and the continuous embarrassing scenarios between Nigeria and South Africa led to a cooling of anything procurement -wise with South Africa.
It is actually pleasing to see that some significant PROCUREMENT between S'Africa and Nigeria has improved to the point of seeing a Trevelo ( spelling) in the hands of an NA.
It is significant because the NA with regards to sniping has stuck to 3 main rifles
2 are from the US
1 is from RUSSIA.

Electronic warfare, EMP guns e.t.c, watch drones fall from the sky.

Yet another counter-UAV "experiment" by the Russian military, now in the Central MD. Three episodes of the exercise:
1) Electronic warfare, detection of control frequencies, and jamming preventing take-off the drones
2) detection, targeting, and imitated strikes by Tor-M1

As a Nigerian and presumably a tax-payer are you happy that:
1) Bags of money are stuffed into a plane and flown away;
2) Customs officials in SA question all involved and detain plane and confiscate funds;
3) Detained persons claim to be on Nigerian govt business but some of them hold Israeli passports, can't produce any proof of any meetings with any arms company;
4) Nigerian officials confirm that the whole thing is highly irregular?

Does none of that bother you? Is it your contention that SA should have broken its own laws to spare the egos of some?

No...But we all are aware of the circumstances that lead to that. As a fellow African Country that supported them through the struggle against apartheid things could have been handled better. They did not have to allow things go South as they did

What circumstances led to this?

Did the Nigerian government willfully do this?

The fact is South-Africa stabbed Nigeria in the back, there are no two ways about it.

If I'm honest, I feel disappointed that Nigeria still buys arms from South-Africa.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, stopped Nigeria from buying arms from South Africa legally. It is illegal under our law to bring bags of undeclared cash. Nigeria bought arms from SA before, and knows the proper process.

The only embarrassment is to the very senior people in your govt who were exposed for this attempted caper. It's your taxes and if you choose not to hold them accountable, no concern of mine.

But you can't go around regurgitating their exculpatory excuses and expect no response.

The incident bothered Me.
It bothered every single right thinking Nigerian.
The Pastor involved has been castigated even 10 years later and the public disgrace that shadowed the GEJ Administration.
The South African Govt seemed determined to humiliate the Nigerian Govt for as long as they could drag it out ( It was a Nightmare scenario) whereby both Govts were quibbling over $10M.
It ( The quibbling) would have long term implications for both Countries especially Nigeria.
Most 99.99% Military deals in Nigeria are G2-G2(2015-Present)
Nigeria has given Military deals to Israel >$100M
Deep Blue Project, NAF SF training.
China $200M+ and counting ( There is a bigger one on the Horizon)
Russia ( $200M+ +++ 5 MI35, 2MI-171E+ parts for Arty Shells , Tank sparesT-72s
This is just over a 5 Year period.
Nigeria and S’Africa should be doing deals of the nature of $200M+
It hasn’t happened.
Nigeria has a up and down relationship with the US
They dropped $450M+ for Planes, Spares, Simulator, sent Pilots to US , brought US Contractors to Nigeria.
My question to you is was the short term embarrassment that was inflicted on Nigeria worth it?
South Africa has the best Missile Technology in Africa.
Open secret : Nigeria is heavily involved in Rocket and Missile technology .
Why haven’t they reached out and touched South Africa?

A little bit of knowledge here .
There are two major parties in Nigeria and some Nigerians are split down the Middle including in Families as to whom to support.
What is not an issue is 90% of Nigerians don’t want their FG buying weapons of meaningful value from South Africa and this is in a G2-G2 deal .
No hanky panky.
Everything 100% Legal.
Because of this one deal.
That went south.
Everyone agreed with legal shady aspect of it .
But what infuriated Nigerians and brought us together ( Rare feat)
South Africa kept rubbishing Nigeria long afterwards.
We are giving you the Nigerian perspective .
It was galling after everything Nigerians did to help the ANC end apartheid.
We felt they went overboard with the legal scolding.

I maybe wrong but my take at the time was that deal was cash based because of EO (Executive Outcomes). The ANC government want nothing to do with them, but Jonathan was using them. If he (Pres. Jonathan) had gone G to G with the ANC govt for weapons to be used by EO. It won't have happened. The ANC fear EO,as the only force capable of bringing about a successful coup in SA.

Make una free ANC/South Africa na. Did Saudi Arabia not sieze the plane conveying weapons to Nigeria. It was a grand plot against the govt of former president Goodluck Jonathan.
If he is wise he would make a strong point in his next 4 years from 2023.
