WHY YOU SHOULD INSTALL A BOREHOLE ON FARM.
Considering all the environmental impacts that influence our water supply, farmers need to plan ahead for water alternatives that can support their farming needs. Apart from well points and Grey water systems, a borehole is the ideal groundwater system for farming because it reduces the usage of potable water.
A ‘borehole’ can be described as a deep hole intended to tap water. It’s used in place of municipal water, and the most common use of boreholes is a self - sufficient water source for businesses and without a good quality water solution, the lack thereof will become detrimental to your farming businesses.

Here are two main benefits of drilling a borehole on the farm:

1.Helps you to become more self - sufficient with your business
A borehole is a resource that your business can rely on, whenever the municipality has water problems. It allows you to be more self-sufficient with your business, because you have total control over your water supply and will not be inconvenienced by any restrictions, unless vital. A borehole requires very little to maintain, in terms of ongoing costs, besides an electrical pump to power the water. This makes it a financial asset that will bring your business years of production.

2.Economic advantages

Over the years, water prices have risen and the more you use, the more you pay. With borehole water, you are not spending massive amounts on water bills, as it accesses an existing supply of groundwater which is accumulated over the years. For watering purposes, this water can be used as is, but if you require filtered, clean water, you can insert a filtration method that makes it ideal for drinking too. Along with an economic advantage, having a borehole on your property will help to add value to your property.

WHAT ARE THE BOREHOLE DRILLING PROCESS.

One of the questions we get asked a lot at Southwest Drilling, after we’ve explained a little about what we do, is how we do it. Installing a borehole can take up to one week from start to finish, though the majority of the work takes place over 2 weeks.
Here’s how the Southwest Drilling team will install your new water borehole:

Step 1

Our team will carry out a geophysical investigation /survey on your location using geology reports and local borehole. This gives us a good idea about how viable your borehole is, the depth we’ll need to drill to.

Step 2

If the results of the geophysical investigation /survey are good, we’ll pay your site a visit to get an even better idea of what we’re working with. After that, we’ll be able to give you an official estimate based on your location and specific needs.

Step 3

Once you’ve chosen to go ahead with your borehole, give us a call to arrange a time to install it. We’ll make sure it’s a convenient time for you and then we know everything we need before we start.

Step 4

When the day comes, we’ll arrive at your location with our drilling rig. We use rotary drilling rigs as well as drills that use compressed air or drilling fluids, depending on the material. Our trained, license drillers will then drill to the planned depth and install a casing that supports the well. We’ll then add gravel to prevent any surface water from seeping into your borehole . Once this is done, the team will cover the hole with a manhole cover that lies flush with the ground. This process usually takes us around 1-5 days depending on the soil formation.

Re: Geophysical Investigation And Borehole Drilling For Farm by Odbas(m): 4:27pm On Jan 31, 2021
Step 5

Our install team and an engineer will arrive to put a pump and control panel into the borehole. We’ll leave it for a week or two until the borehole is producing consistently clear water, and then take some to test so that you’ll know if your water is free from minerals, metals and other contaminants.

Step 6

Once we’ve the results back, our engineer will come back to finish everything off. You’ll have a holding tank that ensures you have a consistent supply of water that is filtered and sterilised, ready for your use. If the tests came back positive for contaminants, we’ll be able to install a treatment system that will purify it.

Talk to the Southwest Drilling team today 09136061266 to get started on your own borehole. You’ll save money on your bills, gain independence from the water company and be in control of your own water supply.

WHAT ARE THE GEOPHYSICAL METHODS

Exploration geophysics is an applied branch of geophysics and economic geology, which uses physical methods, such as seismic, gravitational, magnetic, electrical and electromagnetic at the surface of the Earth to measure the physical properties of the subsurface, along with the anomalies in those properties. It is most often used to detect or infer the presence and position of economically useful geological deposits, such as ore minerals; fossil fuels and other hydrocarbons; geothermal reservoirs; and groundwater reservoirs. Exploration geophysics can be used to directly detect the target style of mineralization, via measuring its physical properties directly. For example, one may measure the density contrasts between the dense iron ore and the lighter silicate host rock, or one may measure the electrical conductivity contrast between conductive sulfide minerals and the resistive silicate host rock.

WHY THE DECREASE IN BOREHOLE WATER ?

Let’s consider some of the possible reasons for water delivered by a borehole becoming less and less.

It could be that the pump’s inlet has been blocked by a plastic bag, cable ties or other foreign objects in the borehole. There is also the possibility that the pipe in the borehole carrying the water to the surface has developed a leak. However, these reasons are more the exception than the rule during times of drought. The more likely explanation is that due to the very low rainfall, not enough rainwater was added to the aquifer. The term "recharge" is used to describe water on the surface of the ground percolating downwards into an aquifer.

Groundwater can be compared to water in a sponge. It exists through rainfall that happened recently or many thousands of years ago and is stored in various types of formations. The type of formation determines how quickly water moves through it. Water moves very slowly through clay or fractured granite but a lot faster through loose sand. This affects the rate of recharge of an aquifer. Other factors such as tarred roads, paved areas and large expanses of rooftops reduce the ground surface area. Rainwater ends up in storm water drains and does not reach the aquifers in the area.

Pumping too much water out of your borehole without adequate rainwater to recharge the aquifer will result in your borehole delivering less water. The dynamic becomes quite simple: no rain plus high abstraction rates equals a diminishing (or vanishing) resource. In the case of the borehole owner with the ‘weak sprinklers’, a few weeks after the rains returned, the sprinklers miraculously returned to their expected performance. Personal experience with numerous commercial installations have shown how quickly water levels in boreholes can recover after a few good downpours.
