The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, has said Nigeria needs to reform its electoral system by adopting electronic voting to help in eliminating the errors caused by human factors in compiling election results.

Onu said this when he paid a facility visit to the Electronic Development Institute (ELDI) in Awka, Anambra State, yesterday.

The minister, who was confident that when Nigeria reforms her electoral system by adopting e-voting, malpractices, fraud and less credible results would be a thing of the past, added that more Nigerians would be willing to participate in the electoral process.

According to him, the nation’s democratic process will experience tremendous improvement when these reforms take place.

“Democracy is like a living organism that grows like humans, animals and plants, for this to happen we need electronic voting, as this will reduce malpractices associated with human errors,” he said.

Until it is hacked or people start adding ghost electronic votes from villages and hamlets.

Paper and ink is still the most precise. Look at America; they have returned to default settings too.

What I agree is electronic transmission or result so we can all see it in real time but votes? We are playing with trouble

Nothing works in Nigeria. An election cannot give a country a firm sense of direction if it has two or more national parties which merely have different names, but are as alike in their principals and aims as two peas in the same pod.

I don't see this electronic system working, I see it being hacked like a Facebook or WhatsApp account. This I have seen.

My problem with the country is that we always find loopholes in the system and exploit it for personal benefits.

Since the present system has been hijacked , my the electronic system can be used

But it is not the voting that matters, it is those who count it and proclaim winners and losers that we should focus on, there should be checks and balances to prevent the contestant from choosing the umpires

A constitution that gives the executive powers to chose who would head the electoral body has already programmed the process to be biased

Even many developed and sane climes are not using electronic voting presently..
Let us take things one step at a time.
This is an old rule in computer security that we first learned in the many many years ago, and it is no less true today.
And that is : the biggest threat to all of our systems is not the outside hacker but rather the fact that there are lots of perfectly honest normal people making errors.
Very soon we will get to the time of electronic voting in our darling country, most def not now.

God bless Nigeria.

Electronic voting Is a big No. Electronic validation (two way authentication, finger print, face scan etc) of voters and electronic transmission of vote should be made mandatory it should go hand in hand with the manual process. If the result counted and announced at the polling unit is greater than those obtained from electronic validation, then the result is cancelled.
