There are some skills on upwork that are already saturated ( too many freelancers have the skill) , my advice to you is to learn a skill that's uncommon then create your profile using that skillset, there are high chances upwork will approve the account, when they do, update your profile with your main skillset. I am a software developer and some of the skills that i know aren't saturated on upwork are :- machine learning, deep learning, rust, julia, R. I know it's not easy learning this languages but you can create an upwork account with this languages the day you start to learn them ( then update your profile later to reflect your strong hold)

Upwork is one of the best freelancing platforms i have come across, in the past i tried fiverr, peopleperhour but bleh.

I don't really like programming apart from C and small website design I can't bear to waste my time because I have a ton of things to do, I don't even have a laptop anymore so to hell with them if they can't accept writers they should shift, not like they have anything over fiverr, freelancer and others.

Since you know c you should try toptal. That c would be good to pass their codility data structures and algorithms test grin

What is your niche?
software development
Re: Upwork Thread (Questions/Help/Advice) by qtguru(m): 10:29am On Feb 13, 2021
Upwork is tricky, you have to serve a niche when starting, trying to get Frontend jobs like Angular is like OYO. Look for niche services. These days platform skills earn more money than tech skills. Magento developer, Moodle Developer, people want to operate things on their platform so if you can learn a d extend those platforms you are in money. Thats my honest advice. I've only done few jobs on Upworks but haven't earned as much as others sha. Laziness na my case, still on 800$ but like I say if you can sell directly you will make much more. Its just you have to build something which takes time. Some of you can partner up and sell items on Envato. I'm saying this, because I often research Envato authors and I notice they work in team but some are single. When I settle down I'll write something here

Welcome back based on your signature; I was already like it's been a while I read your post.

Please would you mind sharing tip for this platform developer stuff. I am more interested in Moodle. In one of my former place of work, I use Moodle, just installation, configuration and using it to organize Computer based test. Nothing more.

I don talk tire but people no dey hear word. Once you have learnt the basics find a niche. General software development doesnt pay except you are willing to go deep into two and start practicing all the data structures and super algorithms.

I am a jamstack Developer presently and have a full time job but I got a 1000 USD contract from upwork this past month for that jamstack. My own senior developer at work also gives me gigs outside work which he pays me daily for.

My own now na even to learn Salesforce because if I can get certified I can be earning as much as 2 million naira a month if I stay in Nigeria and target remote but I don't want to stay here.

not much to say other than i applied, getting jobs on upwork is not so difficult if you have a strong profile ( with good reviews) and you can write good proposal. One mistake a lot of freelancers make is that they apply to jobs with template proposals, a serious client will definitely know that you made used of a template.

I am trying not to diverge from the main topic, symfony has a steeper learning curve than laravel, You don't really need to know the core of PHP to be a laravel developer but if you dive into symfony with little knowledge of PHP you might struggle.
Laravel itself uses 16 symfony components, if you ask me which i prefer I will say symfony, I like how it makes me the boss of my own code. If you ask me which i will advice a dev to learn i will say laravel, there are more laravel jobs than symfony and it is also easier to learn.

A typical dev job on upwork always have an average of 20 proposals, if you don't have a strong profile ( not top rated or don't have many reviews) and you are applying to job that already has 5-10 proposal ( i won't advice to apply to job with more than 10 proposals if you are just starting up) your proposal will be kicked down by upwork algorithm, meaning your proposal might not be the first 5 the client will see when he checks proposals for his job posting if your are lucky the clients scrolls down and see your proposal, One thing i always do is try to capture the client's attraction in the first sentence of my proposal, upwork will only show the first say 15 words from your proposal so you want to make sure that your first 15 words of your proposal is spot on, don't go beating about the bush listing your experience, sure you can do that but save it for the next paragraph, Your first sentence should show that you actually read the client's job description, to me i think that's what most client looks for first, someone that actually read the job description and not someone that is sending template.

I thought the possibility of proposals been seen is how fast one submits it. I didn't know the top guys are favoured irrespective of their proposal being submitted late.

If you are interested in Moodle, then you should start learning Moodle now, because you can use your PHP Skill, I am working on a Moodle theme, but now that I am fully settled I will also create some Youtube videos.
