#Food vendors lament

#Afenifere, PANDEF threaten retaliation

#No going back unless… – Dealers

#We are not part of strike — Southern MACBAN

The strike action embarked upon by the cattle and foodstuff dealers under the aegis of the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN) has driven up prices of beef, food and vegetables in the South.

AUFCDN, an affiliate of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) commenced a nationwide strike Thursday following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum given to the federal government to attend to their demands.

The Union is demanding protection of its members, payment of N475 billion compensation for lives of members and properties lost during the #EndSARS protest and the Shasa market crisis in Ibadan. It also demands the dismantling of all roadblocks on federal highways where their members are harassed and money extorted from them by the authorities.

The strike entails closing all routes between the North and South for vehicles conveying cattle and food items. Such vehicles are stopped from reaching the Southern region.

Butchers in the South who still have stock have capitalised on the strike to hike prices. So have sellers in perishable food items shipped from the North.

Lagos is one of the states worst hit. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had at the commissioning of a new semi-mechanized abattoir for cows and goats in Bariga recently said that the state consumes over 50 per cent of animal production in Nigeria.

A kilo of beef that sold for N1, 200 to N1, 500 before the strike now sells for N2, 000. A basket of tomato, which sold between N4, 000 to N6, 000 before now, ranges between N13, 000 to N15,000.

The chairman of United Butchers of Lagos State Abattoir Complex, Oko-Oba in Agege, Abdullahi Ahmed, said that before the strike, about 1,000 cows were slaughtered daily at the abattoir while close to 1,500 cows were slaughtered on Saturdays.

“Now, we cannot slaughter up to 200 because there are no cows. What we are slaughtering are the ones being reared here and they are small,” he said.

Ahmed told Daily Trust that the three cows he slaughtered on Saturday were bought at N630, 000. “I saw someone buy one cow at N900, 000 on Saturday. The situation is very terrible,” he said.

It was also learnt that less than five cows were slaughtered at Odo-Eran, in Ojo Cantonment on Saturday.

Daily Trust observed that many have turned to fish while those who had planned to buy fresh pepper and tomatoes for storage purposes could no longer do so.

Chineye Okoroafor, a trader at the Agbara market, a border community in Ogun State, said that dealers have resorted to hoarding goods.

We southerners will like to thank the north for this. We have been hoping you take your goods elsewhere, and stop spoiling market for the local farmers.

Imagine, an Hausa seller will not rent a shop. He will not rent a room to sleep in. He will sleep in the open space He will not send children to school and pay school fees.

All these shallow lifestyle makes him feel okay selling things too cheap.

Unlike the southern seller who lives a normal life of renting shop or stalls, proper rooms to live in, send children to private schools, etc.

So take your poor lifestyle elsewhere and stop spoiling business for people down south.

Now, our own farmers can increase their efforts on agriculture, knowing that northerners will no longer come to offer uneconomic prices for the same farm products.

Haba, why are we northerners not thinking straight before embarking on the paths of destruction? Do we think we can sustain this fight against the south and win? Who is advising us wrongly?

Let us stay in our own and support the division of the country instead of this bully tactics we always do.

We should learn to look at options
4 thousand naira meat wey I buy on Friday be like bobrisky blokos. Very small. I no talk. Yesterday na fish I buy. Plenty and sweet. My kids dey do yuck yuck I dey do yummy yummy. Last last we chop am together and slept happily. Moral...look for options. As meat no dey I enter fish. If fish scarce I go enter crayfish. If crayfish scarce na to buy Maggi chicken flavour. The flavour go make believe. Them say onions go scarce I don buy the flavours down. Pepper scarce I don buy plenty ata gungun. If tomatoes scarce we go use tinned tomatoes.
Let's adapt. When their craze come down after hunger show dem kukere dem go sell. We move

The south will surely survive...

But will the North survive when we fight back to stop them from benefiting from our crude?

Because, Buhari with no knowledge on petroleum made himself the minister of petroleum to control out crude..

Go to NNPC, they're all filled up with northerners....

By the time the south will fight back, this country will surely divide on it's own.

Which part of the South? A third of the cows in SW are owned by westerners.... So? Now we move to chicken n turkey....we are also not selling our chicken n turkey to the North. They should feed fat on their miserable cows.

From now on they will grow and eat their own food. This will now make southerners farm and own their own crops. NDDC please close all the petroleum pipes goingbto the north too, immediately. From now on no body should send anything to the north. Divided we stand. In fact start packing all the fulanis you see in sabo markets in the south and send them back to the north. They too should send us our people. Breaking the country is even easier than hoped for. They started it.

If the Biafrans could survive the food blockade during the war time, the southerners would as well survive Just let the herdsmen vacate our forests so that we can go back and farm

We remembered how we use to live as brothers as sisters in our darling nation with these same Fulani herdsmen.
The times we gave water and food to herdsmen journeying across the nation as they go on their business peacefully,
Just with their sticks for their cattles and kettles for their prayers.
May it never be well with troublemakers in our darling nation.
May it never be well with all evil herdsmen and all their sponsors, along with proscribed ipob terrorist organizations and any other persons, group or politicians sponsoring chaos and violence in our land.

No matter all manner of violence or chaos some devilish people are causing all over.

Nigeria is ONE and that IS FINAL.

This too shall pass.....

Hmmmm, this is deep and so emotional.
All of us @ can testify to this too.
This is what politics of hatred and bitterness can do to some evil people.

The problem is not making it permanent... or the strike sustainable..

You see, we cant really invest in Agriculture the way we want to because, before you know it, the strike has been lifted and the new investments catching up would be at a loss rather than rapid with the ongoing strike..

I think if the southern Governors support the move alongside FG, it would raise core Agricultural investors from the south.

Payment of 475 billion naira for what?
They should invest that kind of money on education,
We won't be having their type of menace in the future.

Firstly, Niger and Cameroon combined together do not have the purchasing power of the South. grin The North can throw Chad in the mix and it won't make any difference.

They should continue the blockage until Argentina start dumping their beef in Cotonou and your guess is as good as mine where it will all end?

Or other countries that produce the food we need use Benin and our porous border as a launching pad to sale their products.

Since Nigerians tasted foreign rice they have refused all local rice even with the incentives and gimmicks. That will be the fate of the North once Nigeria taste those South American beef.

"make the North dey there dey mumu themselves"

Please let them continue let them not stop.

Am even planning on how to start importing onions from Germany.

During the last time onions was scarce and costly, my uncle who stays in Germany brought a suitcase load.of.onions, we shared to family and friends during the Xmas.

Interestingly, German onion was fresh, more tasteful and solid than ours.

Am still using it till date and not one has spoilt unlike our own that easily decay when kept for a long period of time.

Please north suspend your onions, time to make cool cash is now.
