For example, the Saudis are trained by the Americans, yet they still put on such shows.

The various acquisitions make sense to me. The M346 is a Lead in Flight Trainer/ Light Attack.
Your pilots need to transition from your Pakistani basic trainers to jet aircraft.
If NAF is smart, a squadron will be made available as CAS support, and the rest to train future JF17 pilots.

Then again, I might be projecting: we in SA use our Hawk LIFT as a precursor to the Gripen. Hell, our Hawk cockpits have been Gripenised to ease the transition.

I was thinking the JF17B version would serve in transitioning.

The B version is finishing school for the guys who've gone past the LIFT phase.

If the M346 purchase is confirmed, here's the logical progression as I see it:
1) basics in Pakistani Mush;
2) intermediary/advanced in other props like King Air;
3) intro to jets/ mid- aviation in LIFT M346;
4) final / ace in JF17.

But as I said, my logic is based on SAAF, and NAF might think differently.
