The Ekumeku war was fought by your grand fathers abi?

While the Yorubas practically begged the Colonialists to colonize them, the Aro Confederacy in present day Abia fought the superior British firepower.

Go school, una no gree.

Go and study about Aro, Abam, Edda, Ohafia, Abiriba, Awka these were purely warrior clans.

While your people were busy killing themselves in tribal warfare, Ndi Igbo were busy perfecting the art of democracy.

It took Yorubas 100 years later to cast with bronze after Ndi Igbo achieved the feat. Today, no indigenous sculpt art is more sophisticated than Igboukwu bronze.

Arochukwu used to be an Ibibio land, but today it is Igbo by conquest. We didn't get it by begging but warefare.

Ndi Igbo is the only major ethnic group that didn't lose any part of its territory to an external aggression.

No matter who Igalas tired, no inch of land was ceded to them, today, we Nzam under our full control.

I don't blame una, na FG wey remove History from our Curriculum I dey blame.

Didn't you read where it wrote that the yorubas, nupe and hausas are civilized and should have a better fate than the rest group, it went further to say they shouldn't be used for slavery.

How many Nupes "Nufe" were slaves then? Who wants to buy a lanky Hausa slave?

You are not even known in national and international rating of any kind...
We are not talking about international rating, if you want to talk about that, open a new topic. We are specifically to talk about precolonial kingdoms and empires. So i ask again, mention a single empire founded by Igbo people if any.

We all know about the Hausa empire, the fulani empire, the benin empire, the Old oyo empire and their heros, we all hear about the history of some of their heros, we hear about usman dan fudio, Afonja, queen aminat, Sango and how they went to battle against other empires and defeated them.

But something amazes me, i have never heard about any igbo empire, never heard about any igbo hero, never heard about any igbo wars. other empires organized wars against the colonists, they resisted and fought until they were subdued, never read any resistance of the colonists by the igbos.

The only war, we know the igbos fought was the civil war in which they were defeated by NIGERIA.

The only igbo hero i know was a fictional one in Chinue Achebe book, Okonkwo in things fall apart.

There was no democracy in old igbo land.

There were different unorganised igbo clans scattered in many places. That is why monarchy system couldn't take place.

Every organised civilization had a monarchy, even the Egyptians had a monarchy, the greek had one etc.

In the igbo culture, The head of the house or the clan was the sole ruler( dictator)

No election was ever organised in old igbo land even till today, no election is held when selecting a clan leader, it is mostly by senority.

Unorganized? You are not okay at all.

The Igbo practiced the most complex of democracy that the British couldn't even make sense of it. grin

Monarchy is a barbaric system of government built on savagery, pillaging and invasion. It belongs to dark age of human development.
Its nothing to be proud of.

The Igbo abhorred and rejected monarchy because we could never make sense of the very idea of one lazy man and his family not going to farm like his mates but fully dependent on the farm produce of others in the name of tribute and entitlement. The Igbo mind could and would never accept such an anomaly and the civilized world couldn't either which is why monarchy died.

You know nothing about Igbo culture but you want to blab about. There was no ruler in Igbo democracy. The Okpara ukwu holds the Ofo of the clan, but he doesn't dictate for anyone. He is more like a Senate president and his Ofo is like the mace. His job is to stamp into law with his Ofo decisions agreed upon after deliberation by the whole clan.

Yes! There was no elections. Representation is mainly by age (Okpara) and by achievement(Nze na Ozo and other title holders). But there are a times when elections are held. For example, if a clan wants to send an emissary to deliver a message to another clan, such topic is usually discussed in the village square with selection of who to be sent taken by Democratic voting process after nomination of worthy representatives .

Now you are changing the narrative. kwo?

Nobody would want weak, lanky fellow who can't make it beyond the shores of the niga area. lol

Till today, all you have is empires which contributes nothing to the national system.

Those slaves and their descendant are busy working abroad sending money home...

Every year, they remit average of $8billion yearly of the $18 billion sent by all Nigerians in diaspora.

Hausa and Fulani contribution is less than $1billion.

Don't ask how much the government gets because bank charges from the remittance goes to the FG and bulk of it goes to north to maintain your empires cheesy cheesy.

The Eboes, the Igbos who have no empires are huge blessing to Nigeria...but they are treated poorly.

What is it about empire building to be proud about?

You are proud that your barbaric ancestors went about invading and pillaging neighbouring African tribes?
Killing their young men and taking their women for sex slaves?
What is there to be proud of useless empires that never evolved any civilization and were battered in matter of days by the British empire?

Igbos never had empires, we are not empire builders,we are a people who cherish freedom and never tried to enslave others. We were Republican and Democratic in nature.
The world has realized that monarchy is outdated and are shifting to democracy, yet Ndiigbo had practiced democracy since ancient days. We were ahead of time by a long mile. The Igbo so hated monarchy that we gave our children names like "Ezebuilo" meaning "The king is an enemy". The Igbo has always been against the idea of one man dictating for everyone else, which is what empire is all about.

Despite this, the Igbo mounted the most resistance against the colonists than all the mushroom empires in Southern and Northern Nigeria.

Bro, an empire is not a good thing. Empire means that some people went somewhere to take over other people lands, and it is usually done by war and force. Igbos are not empire builders, they never needed it, they are a highly decentralized and confederate people.

However, Igbos know know to come together and fight whenever their freedom is threatened. Google Ekumeku war, Aro war and Biafran war.

You have changed history.

Igbo people were still naked when usman dan fodio was preaching in sokoto in the 19th century.

Below is a picture of how igbo people were in the 20th century.

Beautiful.

Look how exquisite and colourful the material they wore. Common choices then were delicately patterned linen, cotton, silk and bark-cloth, accompanied by intricate jewellery of brass, bronze and coral.

It shows the connection with Igboland and Ancient African civilisations like Egypt below whose styles were influenced by their humanistic values and climate.

Igbos back then were fiercly proud and considered their fashion the standard. Due to this, they greatly looked down on the weird clothing choices of mohammedian tribes. Much like Americans look down on blanket-wearing Arabs or Burka -wearing muslims today.

Sadly, today some are bragging about completely abandoning their traditional dress for wearing Arab clothing. Suited particularly for the Arabian desert and not the stifling West African humidity.

Igbo man don't go to another mans land to conquere them....we practice native Democratic system of government.

Few people or king never make decision in Igbo land....we don't have igwe(king) is not our system of government

What we have is elders(every family picks an eldest son in their family to represent them in a meeting and when a decision is to be made the majority Carry's the vote) there's no palace... what we have is OBODO(EZI) WHERE EVERYBODY CONVENES WHEN THERES IMPORTANT MEETING

IF YOU ASK THE COLONIALISTS THEY WILL TELL YOU IGBOS WERE THE MUST STUBBORN, MOST STRONG RESISTANCE AND MOST INTELLIGENT TRIBE THEY MET IN WEST AFRICA

Btw, thebosstrevor. Just stop. There is no way a person like you can even hope to understand Igbo history and values.

For someone whose ancestors were semi-slaves under a mere mortal masquerading as an 'Emperor', the freedom and confidence that the average Igbo-born has is something not just anyone can experience. Or don't you know to be subject to a human being for centuries is a generational curse?

Even in the hebrew bible, God didn't approve of the hebrew kingship. In fact, if you're trying to figure out Igbo societal structure, it bears similarities to the divine-sanctioned societal structure of the Hebrews before they decided to ignore God and create their own Monarchy.

As a result of their ultra-egalitarian societies, they were able to quickly organise and adapt to change in a paces that could be quite frightening.

It is why Igbos are heading the largest freedom fighting organisationin the world, and were able to launch one of Africa's most dangerous security outfits under the noses of a blatantly hostile power.

The true making of greatness is decided when people can fight against oppression and yet practice a civilized system of republicanism without sheepishly following some barbaric "emperor" around. There's a reason why the Igbos are celebrated today globally (especially in the USA, Carribeans, and parts of South America and Europe) were trans-athlantic slavery were most prominent. The most popular slave rebellions and leaders who led uprisings to usurp the slave ships, plantations etc and wipe out the white slave masters were mostly Igbo or were of Igbo origin... the most successful slave rebellion in black history ( Haiti revolution) were instigated and led by many Igbo self-liberated slaves. The Bussa rebellion in today's Barbados which is the largest uprising in Barbadian history was led by a freed slave by name of Bussa (who was of Igbo heritage)... needless to mention the much celebrated Igbo landing which has become a source of pop culture and renaissance in the fabric of black consciousness across the United States. Where I'm I going with all of this? it's quite simple, Igbos hate oppression, we're not a sheepish people who bow down to just any man, you've got to earn that leadership and trust by your proven records and qualities. The greatest black abolitionist today is Igbo (Olaudah Equiano).

Igbos didn't need an empire to produce beautiful artworks like Igbo Ukwu. Igbo-Ukwu is notable for three archaeological sites, where excavations have found bronze artifacts from a highly sophisticated bronze metal-working culture dating to 9th century AD, centuries before other known bronzes of the region.

We didn't need an empire to resist the British colonial forces for 34 years in the Ekumeku war fought by the Western Igbos and their Aro allies... today the Ekumeku resistance has become the blueprint of research into African resistance against colonialism in many British libraries and research institutes today.

We didn't need an empire to have a powerful theocratic civilization in the Nri kingdom, and without war and subjugation the Nri civilization had a greater sphere of impact on most so called empires like the Benin kingdom etc.

Meanwhile the Oyo empire was once sacked by the Nupe and Fulani alike, under the very watch of the Oyo empire Ilorin fell to the Fulani, and the status quo remains the same till date. The so called empire also failed to stop the yorubas from butchering each other for years in the Kiriji wars, so much that the yorubas had to beg British to come colonize them after they had become so disorganized and vulnerable.

The Benin kingdom abi "empire" fell to the British forces in just 2 days or so of fighting with all their artifacts plundered and looted, and the their King sent into exile where he lived out the rest of his days.

Essentially the only effective empire in Nigeria was the Karnem-Bornu empire, then at large the British empire of modern times remains the greatest and most significant empire... of course we had other great empires like the Songhai, Mali, Kingdom of Aksum, Ethiopia etc

Oh. And another thing.

One of the worst thing a person could ever try to say is that Igbos are disorganised. Unfortunately, it might quickly alert others of one's stupidity whether falsely or not.

Igbos were admired and held in envy across West Africa because many were in awe of their ability to form cohesive and disciplined groups to immefiately in ingluence their environments.
In fact, at particular points in time the Igbo Union was one of the most powerful societies In Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria and the Cameroons.

It wasn't magic or juju as some particularly envious elements concluded, it was literally how their societies ran.

Because there was no 'overseer' that imposed their will and lorded over the inhabitants. Igbo society comprised of a very complex web of societal contracts, principles and organisations that emphasized and sought progress and achievement.

The British were regularly frustrated coming to Igboland, as they used to the more simplistic styles of governance in other parts of Nigeria.

The whole 'Igbos are disunited' is just lame propaganda after the Biafran War to defame the 'defeated' by suberting what was considered a well-known fact, and has no basis in truth. Something many Nigerians sadly realise immediately they step outside their house.

An example: in response to the herdsmen menace Igbos developed an advanced security force.
On the other hand, more disorganised groups are being slaughtered in mass graves or pursued to Benin republic because they were unable to unite to a common goal.
