– Olisa Agbakoba has stated that President
Muhammadu Buhari led federal government has no-
clear economic policy
– Agbakoba however praised the President Buhari for
curbing corruption in the country and degrading the
strength of Boko Haram terrorists
Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Olisa Agbakoba
Popular Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Olisa
Agbakoba, has stated that the President Muhammadu
Buhari led federal government has no-clear economic
policy.
He said due to this, Nigeria is no more in recession,
but in depression.
Agbakoba stated this in Lagos yesterday, May 26 at a
press conference while accessing the one year
administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“We are no more in recession, we are now in depression
because five consecutive quarterly growth which Q1 2016
shows a negative balance is a depression. Technically
speaking, you calculate growth rate by GDP over
population, goods and service produced over population.
Do you know the current growth rate for the Q1?
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, it is 0.34.
The last growth rate was two., so we lost two. “Therefore, we are now at the depression stage. Also, if you look at all the critical indexes, you will find out that things are really bad, foreign direct investment is zero, stock market is down, petroleum prices are up, in fact no good news,” He said. He however praised the President for curbing corruption in the country and degrading the strength of Boko Haram terrorists to carry out attacks on the people. According to him, there is no doubt that Nigeria was in a state of chaos and disorder before 2015 elections, loaded with massive insecurity, weak political structure empty treasury and corruption, but after 365 days, how has the president handled these issues? He urged Buhari to look back in history and borrow a leaf from President Roosevelt of the United States whom he said ably dealt with the shock of the great depression that ravaged the country in the 1930s. “And in appraising the one year of President Buhari government, we must also acknowledge the crises of the old order. So all I am saying is the crises of the old order and the hope of change, and now what has happened? “The crises of the old order meant that things were very difficult, there was high rate of corruption, insecurity occasioned by Boko Haram among others, so how has President Buhari handled all these? “In the beginning, I was cautiously positive, but now, I am cautiously negative. I am waiting to see what will happen, but in fairness to Buhari, he has been challenged by the envisaged crises of governance that he found. These crises meant that he was bucked down. Also, more credit should go to him in respect of the anti-corruption war but the anti-graft programme is a rigmarole, and like I said, if you keep looking in the rear mirror, you don’t move. READ ALSO: EXPOSED: Increased fuel price is an Indirect Tax imposed on Nigerians – Fayose “The anti-corruption programme is suffering from the equivalent of a driver who is looking in the rear mirror on what has happened behind, he is not going to move forward. We know that many people have stolen money, but what we want to see is an aggressive action plan. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other law enforcement agencies clearly don’t have the resources, capacity and skill, so the resources we could have gathered (at least 3 to 4 trillion naira from the anti- graft war) are not coming in. “We hear a lot about corruption, although quite agreed that there have been strong action from the government in respect to corruption, insecurity has had flip flops-Fulani herdsmen, kidnappings, Niger Delta militancy, and the suppressed Boko Haram-with all these, and we need a new anti-corruption apparatus that can deliver results but let’s also agree that something has happened in the anti- graft war,” the senior advocate said. |

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural
Gas Workers (NUPENG) said it supported the
petrol price increase because of President
Muhammadu Buhari’s sincerity towards
infrastructure development and oil and gas
policies.
The Chairman of the union in South-West,
Tokunbo Korodo, told the News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday that his
union and the Petroleum and Natural Gas
Senior Staff Association of Nigeria
(PENGASSAN) endorsed the price hike.
He said that although the Federal Government
consulted the unions on its contemplation on
the price increase, they had not taken the
message to their members before the
announcement was made.
Mr. Korodo, however, said, ‘’it was a big
shock but as shocking as it was, we cannot
throw away the baby with the bath water’’.
He said the country was at the verge of
economic stagnation, and that the only way to
move the economy forward was to support the
government’s move.
“We met and x-rayed the problem confronting
the oil industry at large.
“We considered the sincerity of the
government as it relates to infrastructure and
some policies in oil and gas industry.
‘We also put into consideration the plight of
Nigerians. After putting all these forward, the
two unions, after a strong deliberation, arrived
at a conclusion.
“We came to support the government and the
policy of price modulation.
“We believe that if the market is opened a
little, it will create more room for investment,’’
he said.
Mr. Korodo added that “foreign investors with
genuine gesture will come in with their
products and this will create more jobs for the
jobless.
“The foreign investors will not rely on foreign
exchange from government.
“So it is a bold step in the right direction.”
He urged Nigerians to support the price
increase, adding that it was a bitter pill the
country had to take.
The chairman said that the two unions would
not be part of the proposed strike by Nigeria
Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union
Congress (TUC).
“We have informed our members to work and
ensure that nobody intimidates them while
doing their work,” he said.

Boko Haram has been forced to produce its own fuel to power its motorbikes because of an acute petrol shortage caused by a military squeeze on supply lines. A senior military source said the Islamists were paying huge sums of money for jerrycans of fuel while a woman who recently escaped from the group said they were making groundnut oil into biodiesel. “Boko Haram were paying outrageous sums to get fuel and the incredible profit margin made young men defy the risk and take fuel to them,” said the source in the Borno state capital, Maiduguri. “The cutting off of fuel supplies has badly crippled Boko Haram and that has been made possible by blocking all identified supply routes and the crackdown on the suppliers,” he told AFP. Fuel vendors seeking to exploit the group’s need for fuel could sell each 25-litre jerrycan for 50,000 to 70,000 naira ($250- $350, 222-311 euros) each, said escapee Ya-Mairam Ya-Malaye. A jerrycan of fuel in Maiduguri costs only $13. But the risk of being caught up in a military aerial bombardment on Boko Haram positions has forced the vendors to stay away, said the security source. Babakura Kolo, a civilian vigilante assisting the military against the Islamic State group affiliate in Maiduguri, said the militants would pay any amount to get fuel. “It was a lucrative business for the fuel vendors,” said Kolo, who was involved in the crackdown against Boko Haram suppliers in the city. “But we have taken care of them and Boko Haram are feeling the crunch because they are out of supplies.” Previous reports have indicated the rebels are also running low on food. – Groundnut oil – Nigeria and its neighbours Cameroon, Chad and Niger began a concerted fight-back against Boko Haram in January last year, recapturing territory lost to the militants the previous year. President Muhammadu Buhari has said the rebels, whose insurgency has killed an estimated 20,000 people and forced some 2.6 million to flee since 2009, can no longer fight conventional warfare. Instead of its trademark hit-and- run attacks using pick-up trucks mounted with heavy machine guns, the insurgents have even mounted strikes on remote villages on horseback, bicycles or on foot. Ya-Mairam Ya-Malaye, a 57-year- old mother-of-eight who was among hundreds of women and children abducted from the town of Bama in September 2014, managed to escape Boko Haram last week. She said the group has devised a crude way of adding salt to oil extracted from groundnuts to make biodiesel for their motorcycles to mount attacks from their Sambisa Forest enclaves in Borno. “They confiscate the groundnuts (that) farmers in villages in and around Sambisa cultivated all- year-round from their farms and irrigation fields,” she explained from Maiduguri. “They crush the nuts using diesel- powered grinding machines to extract the oil to which they add salt to make it light and combustible.” Boko Haram had been getting fuel from young men who would bring the petrol to designated points near Sambisa (forest) for the fighters to pick, she added. Ya-Malaye said she was taken to Sambisa Forest from Bama and moved between camps as troops pushed further into the former game reserve in pursuit of the militants. The offensives and heightened border security made it difficult for the militants to receive deliveries from fuel vendors from Maiduguri and Cameroonian border towns, she added. Naija is kinda making a difference from other country despart what people say against naija but they still remove singlet for us as a sign of respect.... History was made in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, South-East London after a Nigerian man became the first elected African mayor of the community. 59-year-old Nigerian born Mayor Olugbenga Babatola, who has lived in the UK for decades, had previously served as a councillor in the Greenwich district – a position to which he was elected in 2014 for his inspirational leadership style. In 2015, he became the first African to be elected as deputy Mayor and served alongside current Mayor, Norman Adam. Babatola will be inaugurated into office as the first African Mayor of Greenwich on May 25, 2016. “Looking around Royal Greenwich there’s much to be proud of. The physical regeneration of our community continues apace, while there are many developments in our economic, social and community life,” Council leader Denise Hyland said. “I was determined that we should open the inauguration ceremony to more local people to reflect on the role our community plays in achieving the successes we have enjoyed over the past year. It is also a way to welcome Cllr Babatola to his new role as Mayor, and to thank Cllr Adams for his hard work and service during his tenure,” she added. The mayor is elected by council members at an annual meeting and the position is held for a year. He or she is the first citizen of the Royal Borough and acts as an ambassador at public affairs and at civic and ceremonial events. Nigerian forces have freed more than 800
hostages being held by the radical Islamist
group Boko Haram in a number of villages in the
country’s northeastern state of Borno, the
military said on Thursday.
The military rescued 520 hostages from the
village of Kusumma on Tuesday after clashes
with Boko Haram and 309 hostages from 11
villages elsewhere in Borno state.
“The gallant troops cleared the remnants of the
Boko Haram terrorists hibernating in Kala Balge
general area,” army spokesman Sani Usman said
in a statement released to AFP news agency. He
added that 22 “terrorists” were killed in the
operations and they had retrieved some of the
group’s weapons and a motorcycle.
The rescue came on the same day that the
radical Islamists kidnapped 16 women, including
two girls, from the northeastern state of
Adamawa.
“We received reports of the kidnap of 14 women
and two girls by gunmen believed to be Boko
Haram insurgents near Sabon Garin Madagali
village”, Adamawa state police spokesman
Othman Abubakar told AFP.
The group, which pledged allegiance to the
Islamic State militant group (ISIS) and rebranded
itself as the Islamic State West Africa Province
in 2015, has killed thousands and displaced
millions of Nigerians in a seven-year-long
insurgency that is attempting to create a radical
Islamic state in northeastern Nigeria. The
insurgency has also affected surrounding
countries, drawing in Cameroon, Chad and Niger
into the conflict.
Boko Haram’s elusive leader Abubakar Shekau
on Thursday appeared in a new video, which
could not be independently verified, for the first
time since March 2015, when he made the ISIS
pledge in an audio message.
The video, shared on social media and
distributed on YouTube, shows Shekau holding
an automatic weapon next to an ISIS flag. He
appears to signal that it may be time for change
at the top of the militant group’s leadership
seven years after he took over from the group’s
founder Mohammed Yusuf.
“This is my desire: that whoever sees this will
hear nothing but greetings between me and you.
Only Allah knows the rest, as you believed [and]
as you submitted. For me the end has come,” he
says in the poor-quality video. |
