Good Morning Carik,

Hope this message finds you well. Almost all schools require TOEFL. However, they will be willing to waive it for you if your previous course of study was taught in English. My wife got accepted to University of Denver and it stipulated on their site that TOEFL is required but I picked up the phone and called them and we were able to get a waiver.

My advise for you is to contact the schools you have in mind via phone or email to see if they can waive the TOEFL for you. Regarding the issue of not been able to afford the test, in Igbo we say, when right hand wash left hand, left hand will in turn wash right hand. What I am trying to say is, contact the school and if you are not able to secure a waiver, touch base with me and I will be more than happy to swipe my card online for you to pay for the GRE (guess its about 300 bucks or so).

No disrespect for offering to pay for the test for you. I know that you are capable but I was offended when someone said "Abroad is not for everyone"

Sorry for the late response; it's been a busy day.

Let's get to it...An undergraduate GPA of 2.5 on a scale of 5.0 seems low for most but not all Petroleum Engineering programs in the US. Like most people have rightly said, though the GPA is a very important factor, it's by no means the only criteria for graduate school admission. The person in question can strive to ace the GRE and TOEFL exams and also come up with a decent statement of purpose. I believe this will boost his overall profile towards getting into a grad school. The letter of recommendation is equally important. Unfortunately, I'm aware most of our Lecturers here do turn-in generic recommendations that don't really help.

The challenge with Petroleum Engineering in the US is that there are few schools offering the course when compared with other disciplines. By my estimate, there are about 18 Petroleum Engineering programs in the US. With his profile, the first 10 or thereabout might be too ambitious for now. The problem is not with the GPA alone but also his Geology background, from which he had an average grade point. So, I doubt any of the top 10 programs will grant him an admit. I'm sure he'll find a couple of schools that will admit him albeit conditionally. In my opinion the school you attend doesn't really matter if it's not in the top three. I try not to dwell on that because all US PE programs are arguably better than what you have in Petroleum departments in Nigeria. His geology background will require that he enrols for Undergraduate courses in Drilling, Reservoir, Production and probably formation evaluation. These prerequisites might take two semesters because I don't think one course from each of the aforementioned areas will suffice. He's looking at spending an estimated 36 months for his program. I won't advice changing schools because I don't think he can transfer the credits from those prerequisites courses; in-fact the grades won't count towards his MSc. degree. He could aim for a better school for his PhD. That seems fair enough.

1. Geologist and aspiring to do Petroleum engineering in Masters and PhD: It's doable though challenging coupled with long program duration

2. Very poor GPA: Ace the tests and apply to a lowly-ranked less competitive program. Are you sure it's "very" poor? Maybe not...

3. Another undergraduate entirely in PE?: No. No. I won't advise he does that. It's better he aims for a masters in Geo-sciences instead. I believe he'll find a school. I don't think it's worth going back at that age. PE is sometimes over-hyped.

Bitterness is an ass, peeps are really bitter towards other people's success, how can somebody ever reason that Arthur's money is illegal, Arthur that lives such an open life, even the smallest person you can think of in his office have access to his bedroom, he is with hundress of people surrounding all around 24/7, in fact sometimes I wonder if the man can survive a day without people around, like crowd oo, in Abuja his house and offices na same compound.. I ve worked for him for years and I can tell you the man is a God sent to the human race, what this man gives out in charity, what Emeka offor, Dangote and the likes gives cannot compare, the sweetest part is no one hears, no over bloating of such actions, it's just part of him. People under his payroll that does nothing for him or earns money for him That he still feeds daily and pay monthly are relatively uncountable, is it old people that he pays monthly.... You don't get to read anything about him or his business and profile anywhere cause he is just like that, sometimes people don't even rate him among the rich in Nigeria and Africa cause they don't have any info about him(even when they does, he sees and laugh over it, 'how do they even measure these things, they are talking Nonsense') Meanwhile he has oil blocks and businesses in almost all the west African countries and beyond sef, you know how many country's government writes to him to come do business in their country, some he refuses, some he goes... Only prayers people pray for this man is enough to make him richer... I am also praying more for him, God continue to bless him, make him Richer cause he is serving you with it, putting smiles on people's faces, may he never lack, may no evil come near him, bless his kids awesomely to continue from where he might stop, and make people like us wealthy like him and serve humanity more than he does, owh Lord this is a sincere prayer from a grateful heart... Amen
And by the way, Triax air is still existing till now, it is a private airline now, solely for his travels and for hiring to close associates (not the public)

2.5 on 5.0 is equivalent to 2.0 on 4.0, that's a third class in my school. Anyway all hope isn't lost. The person must be able to ace the GRE very well and if he has any work experience or past achievements. it can help.

I'm heading to Texas Tech for PE. The tuition is pretty much affordable if you get the scholarship that'll qualify you for instate tuition. You might not get RA/TA from the outset. Most departments have the policy that you must have spent a year on campus and taken the International Teaching Assitanship workshop if you want a TA position.
