Politics / Osinbajo Blasts Judges For Unlawful Detention Of Nnamdi Kanu, Others. by prince9851(m): 1:54pm On Feb 01, 2017
Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday, accused the Nigerian Police Force and judges for keeping suspects in prison custody longer than is legally permissible without trial.
The Vice President made the accusation during the opening ceremony of the two-day Stakeholders’ Summit organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, where he was represented by Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
At the summit, holding at Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotels in Lagos, the Vice President said suspects are kept in prison custody for as long as three years without being charged to court. The situation, he explained, has left over 47,000 suspects still awaiting trial in prisons across the country.
“As at 2017, we have 47,229 “unsentenced” detainees awaiting trial out of a total prison population of 67,586. It may interest you to know that Lagos State has the highest number of unsentenced detainees in Nigeria, according to a recent statistic released by the National Bureau of Statistics and Nigerian Prison Service released in 2015,” said the Vice President.
He noted that 85.9 percent of the Lagos State prison population is made up of yet-to-be-charged detainees, adding that the time spent in detention is dependent on the length of proceedings, which are usually extended because of incessant adjournment or lack of diligence by investigators.
As solutions to lengthy prison custody periods, the Vice President called on the judiciary to embrace a daily trial system and sanction lawyers, who deliberately delay proceedings with the intention of stalling trial. He urged the judges and other relevant stakeholders in justice administration to diligently discharge their duties.

Politics / BIAFRA: OUK Urges IPOB To Join Igbo To Agitate For Fair Share Of National cake by prince9851(m): 11:14am On Feb 01, 2017
Former governor of Abia State and a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has advised Igbos to concentrate their efforts in agitation for a fair share of the national cake. He also said Igbos have what it takes to produce the president.

Kalu, who spoke in his country home in Igbere, Abia State recently, said Igbos need to work together to get what they truly deserve in Nigeria. He urged members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to join other Igbos in this regard.

He said former Biafra leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, had told him years before his demise that if he were to fight the Biafra cause all over again, he would have handled it differently.

The former governor said: “Severally, I was with the late Ojukwu in this house before his death. I can’t disclose in public everything we discussed, but If the leader, who pressed for Biafra went to contest for Senate, went to contest for Nigerian president, we should define what our Biafra should be. Our Biafra should be good roads, equality in the nation, respect for human rights, atmosphere for respect for the rule of law and not killing people unnecessarily without the rule of law,” he said.

On the Presidency, he says the South-East has what it takes to produce it.

According to him, the greatest thing anybody can do is to give the Igbo the Presidency of Nigeria after President Muhammadu Buhari.

Giving an appraisal of the media, Kalu said: “The Nigerian media had been very vibrant and this has made us one of the strongest in Africa.”
