PIC Microcontrollers
There are a variety of microcontroller chips available. A large number of manufacturers like, ATMEL, STC, MOTOROLLA, MICROCHIP and many more manufacture these chips. Each manufacturer has his own unique design and architecture. Nevertheless idea is same, but the internal architecture is different, just like Apple and IBM, both are making personal computers, doing similar jobs, yet the programming methodology and structure is different. Same is the case with microcontrollers.
Microchip (www.microchip.com) is one of the leading and experienced microcontroller manufacturer. It produces a large number of microcontrollers, all varying in the level of resources available, like amount of RAM, EEPROM and variety of peripheral devices supported. However the programming and architectural structure is similar at all levels. Therefore if you master one MCU the knowledge will be applicable without modification to the next higher MCU.
The microcontrollers manufactured by microchip, are named as PIC (I don't know why, microchip never used this for the controllers). This stands for Peripheral Interface Controller. Originally designed to control peripheral devices in a computer, so that the burden of CPU is shared. However now these devices are self-sufficient and can work independently without the need of another CPU.
PIC microcontrollers are very popular among students and hobbyists because of their easy handling, portability and wealth of peripheral devices built right into the chip, requiring very little supporting hardware.
A long, long time ago General Instruments produced a chip called the PIC1650, described as a Programmable Intelligent Computer. This chip is the mother of all PIC chips, functionally close to the current PIC16C54. It was intended as a peripheral for their CP1600 microprocessor. Maybe that is why most people think PIC stands for Peripheral Interface Controller. As far as I know Microchip has never used PIC as an abbreviation, just as PIC. And recently Microchip has started calling its PIC microcontrollers PICmicro MCU's.

Ok, lets start with PIC microcontrollers, but before then, let us introduce what microcontroller is all about.

Introduction To Microcontrollers

Welcome to the wonderful world of microcontrollers. You are reading this thread, because you are interested in the fascinating world of electronics. This document assumes that you have basic ideas about electronics, and are able to build simple electronic projects. Although microcontrollers are hi-tech devices, yet they are extremely easy to use. Once you have mastered the ideology behind and know the procedure to control various devices, a whole range of applications is open to you. Devices which required a large number of components and skillful logic design can now be built with almost no or minimal components. One of the greatest advantages of microcontrollers is that they can reduce the hardware requirements dramatically. The logic which was going to be implemented using a number of devices and components can be replaced by software in microcontrollers. Truly speaking microcontrollers are small, one-chip computers. As opposed to microprocessors, which require a number of peripheral devices, like, memory, I/O etc. Microcontrollers have all the necessary peripheral devices built into it. However the scale is small, memory is limited, so are other features.

Remember Microcontrollers were designed to control small peripheral devices, and as such these applications do not require megabytes of memory or the entire power of your PC. Whatever memory and peripheral devices that have been integrated into the package are enough to handle the job. A large number of microcontroller units are available, each differing in terms of memory available, and the number of peripheral devices integrated on the chip. Therefore once you have mastered, how to use these devices, it then remains a matter of choice for a particular application, which microcontroller to choose. Since basic ideology is same, if you master one chip, it is very easy to migrate to another. Moreover if you tend to stick to one clone, they are all upwards compatible.
In a nutshell we can say that a microcontroller is just an integrated circuit which is programmable. Unlike most other digital ICs, which have a designated function, like NAND gates, Flip-flops, Oscillators, 7 segment display drivers, arithmetic calculators etc. Microcontroller has no designated function. If you have a Microcontroller (MCU) chip in your hand and ask what type of function is it going to do? The answer would be I don't know! It can be used to control a motor, or an LCD display, or a 7 segment LED display, or can perform mathematical calculation, or control an infra-red remote control or what else? This is such a surprise that a single chip can do so much. It is versatile, in a sense that you can get a variety of jobs done by this chip, if properly used.
In order to get a job done by this chip, you need to program it first. This program will control the various I/O lines of the chip, and these I/O lines in turn control the devices like motors, LEDs, Infrared sensors etc.
Thus in order to control a device you need to know, its control structure, for example controlling a simple DC motor is different from a stepping motor, and this in turn is different from servo motor. It is therefore essential before starting an application to understand the control requirements of the device. Then you program the microcontroller accordingly, and this makes a complete application.

Microcontroller Applications

Due to the versatile nature of these chips, they have found applications in almost every electronic device today. Think of any device which seems to be computer controlled, it will have a microcontroller working in it.
For example a microwave oven, has a magnetron gun, which heats the food, a motor which rotates the plate, and a display to show the time and cooking parameters etc. Now on the basis of cooking parameters selected by user, the microcontroller inside will be controlling the plate motor, as well as the magnetron gun, turning them on and off periodically to heat the food.
Think of a temperature regulator in your air-conditioner, the microcontroller is sensing the room temperature and according to the selected options, turns the compressor on or off, and the wind swivel motor on and off. So it has a microcontroller as well.
Think of traffic lights, they have to be turned on and off in a set order, it is easy to make them using logical gates, but what if we need to change the order and timing? A microcontroller can do the job easily.
Think of your car, it has microcontroller sitting in it, which is controlling the fuel injection, monitoring the engine RPM, tyre speed, engine temperature and many other parameters. On the other hand it is controlling the amount of fuel to be given, adjusting the appropriate gears and displaying various engine parameters on screen to driver.
Think of an industrial automation system, where small robotic arms are being used to assemble the product, all this automatic process is being carried out by microcontrollers.
Think of the moving sign-boards on airport terminals, the LEDs in them are being controlled by the microcontroller to display messages.
In short there are literally thousands of applications including cell phones, personal and industrial robots, security systems, data logging systems and what not all have microcontroller application.
So if you are interested in electronics as a hobby, or as a professional, it is mandatory to know how to use microcontrollers.

Having a basic idea of electronics, and programming is all that you need to enter into this fascinating world.
This course will take you from beginning to an intermediate level, where you should be able to design your own applications.

It all depends on the type of microcontroller you wish to start with(such as 8051,PIC or AVR). Where is your location? You may try to contact them for one-on-one practical and intensive training on any of the microcontroller family you want to work with.

I may create a new thread on embedded system design tutorial, but before then, I will like us to vote on the type of microcontroller to use. If you want us to use 8051 reply with "8051", if you want us to use PIC micros reply with "PIC" and if you prefer AVR reply with "AVR".

Food / The Sudden Increase In The Price Of Beans by princejude(m): 12:00pm On Sep 14, 2012
I went to a market in KADUNA to buy some foodstuffs but was surprised at the price of beans. One mudu (about 8 cups)of Brown beans = N500, white beans = N450 and rice = N300. Which States in Nigeria produce beans and why the sudden rise in price(more than 200%). I hope this was not caused by all these bombing in the North.

Be Courageous For The Gospel · Friday, February 17th · Page Visits (1,151)

Pastor Chris

Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ (Ephesians 3:cool.

The verse above lets us know our calling, as ministers of eternal verities. We’ve been ordained of God to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ; we’re to tell the untold about Jesus and reach the unreached. It’s a task for everyone who is in Christ; you have a ministry to your world. You’ve been charged with the responsibility to minister life, and the power of God, to the lost and hurting in the world. The Lord knows you’d require courage to achieve this, hence He gave you His precious Holy Spirit, to strengthen and empower you for the task.

To be an effective witness for Christ, you need courage—the boldness of the Spirit in increasing measure. It brings to mind the charge the Lord gave Joshua as he was about to launch out into the ministry; He said to him, "Only be thou strong and very courageous…" (Joshua 1:7). Courage is the ability to face danger and opposition fearlessly. It’s also the will and ability to stand for what’s right in spite of opposition. So being courageous for the Gospel means being willing and ready to do what’s right and necessary for the propagation of the Gospel, in spite of opposition.

What is needed in the ministry of the Gospel today are men and women of courage; courage to affirm your faith in Christ, no matter the adversity. The Lord Jesus, the apostles, and the early Church stood their grounds for the Gospel in spite of oppositions. They didn’t chicken out. They withstood kings and despots of their time; they weren’t scared to die for the Gospel. This positive courage and passion to minister life, to strengthen others—bring them into God’s light—and lift them out of the thralldom of spiritual darkness should spur you on for the Gospel.

Have that inner motivation to make the Gospel known at all cost. That’s the spirit that makes you do anything for the propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Your highest pursuit in life should be making the Gospel known; it’s the greatest cause to live for.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank you for the privilege given to me to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ and minister life to those in my world, through the Gospel. Thank you for empowering me for this glorious task which I’m glad to carry out today, by the power of your Spirit, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live] (Ephesians 2:10 AMP).

One of the biggest and most inspiring truths of the Gospel ever to be communicated to us is that as Christians, we’re actually God’s reproduction; His handiwork! You’re His excellently created masterpiece. This ought to stir faith in your heart and make you value yourself more. To think that God created you, and ordained you to a life of eternal fruitfulness and productivity, even though humbling, is absolutely worth shouting about!

God has never made a failure; that He gave birth to you means you’re a success already. Sickness, poverty, disease, death and defeat are not consistent with your life; they’re not part of your "spiritual DNA." God made you for His glory; therefore your life is to the praise and glory of His Name; never look down on yourself.

You’re the glory of God. It doesn’t matter what your experiences may have been; believe and receive the Word of God to you today. Refuse and refute any description that tends to portray you otherwise. Call yourself what God has called you. He has made you healthy, victorious, super-intelligent, prosperous, strong, influential and rich! Therefore, say "Yes, Lord, I’m what you say I am. I’m healthy, victorious, super-intelligent, prosperous, strong, influential and rich!"

Believe and keep talking like this everyday! Some people may say you’re boasting, but as Pastor Chris always says, "Keep saying it; don’t stop talking it!" Keep declaring who you are; you’re God’s best. He gave birth to you to show you off as first-class and the crown of all His creation (James 1:18). You’re called to display the virtues and perfections of divinity! You were made for His glory and perfected for the good life!

Confession

My life is for the glory of God! I’m created for success and the good life; I have in me the indestructible life, therefore I can never be defeated! I walk in health, victory, prosperity and strength today, because the Greater One lives in me!

Believe And Do The Word · Tuesday, February 14th · Page Visits (1,064)

Pastor Chris

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves (James 1:22).

Some people are puzzled as to what to do to make the Word of God effective in their lives. Their concern is similar to the question the Jews put to Jesus in John 6:28-29: "Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent."

To believe the Word is to believe in Jesus, for He is the living Word. Doing the Word of God is proof that you believe it. Jesus said if you love me, keep my commandment; that means do my word. The Word of God has the ability, potentiality and capacity to produce what it says. James, in his epistle describes the blessedness of the one who hears and does the Word: "But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed" (James 1:25).

The blessing is in doing and not just in hearing the Word. Be sure to provide a good ground in your heart for the Word of God because the Word will naturally produce results once it’s sown in good ground. What guarantees its effectiveness in your life is your faith-response. Faith is action added to the Word that you heard; it’s the response of your human spirit to the Word of God.

For the Word to be effective in your life you must mix it with faith; you must believe and act on it. The Bible describes some in whose lives the Word wasn’t effective, not because the Word was void of power, for no Word from God is void of power, but they didn’t mix the Word with faith: "For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it" (Hebrews 4:2).

Prayer

Dear Father, thank you for sowing your Word into my spirit; your Word is working mightily in me today, producing in me what it talks about because I’m a doer of the Word. With faith, meekness and gladness I receive and act on your Word to me today, to build me up and catapult me to my next level of success, victory and prosperity in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Strengthen The Inner Man · monday, february 13th · Page Visits (934)

Pastor Chris

For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man (Ephesians 3:14-16).

Man is a spirit and he dwells in a body. That spirit or inner man is the real you. As the body or outward man can be weak, so can the inner man be weak if not properly nurtured spiritually. Your inner man must be strengthened with might—miracle-working ability—at all times for you to be able to deal effectively with the crises of life.

Food is to the physical body what the Word of God, prayer, and meditation are to your inner man. Your inner man is strengthened as you spend time studying and meditating on the Word, and praying in the spirit, in other tongues. You also develop the right character and are able to do the things of God more effectively.

Christians who vacillate, not being able to do the things they should do, or strong enough to refuse those things they shouldn’t do, demonstrate an inner weakness. When the inward man is energized, he’ll make the body do what it’s supposed to do, and refrain the body from doing what it shouldn’t do. You need that divine inner fortitude and strengthening in your spirit to forge ahead in life.

You may say, "I like to pray, but sometimes I just can’t get myself together to do it"; or "I want to win souls, but somehow I feel too shy and intimidated to speak." Such things happen when your spirit is not energized. When your inner man is strengthened, you become fervent in the things of God all the time. You’ll love to pray and praise God; studying the Word will become an exhilarating experience for you! It won’t be hard for you to talk to somebody about Jesus; because you’re energized for the Gospel from within; you’re on top every day, bubbling for the Lord!

Confession

In the Name of Jesus, I’m strengthened with divine enablement in my inner man by the Holy Ghost. I function today with the Spirit of might, dominion and excellence, as the Word of God gains the mastery in my spirit, soul and body; dominating my thoughts and actions, in Jesus’ Name.

Pastor Anita

Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours; Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours (1 Corinthians 3:21-22).

Everything you need for life and godliness has already been granted you in Christ Jesus. Our heavenly Father, through Christ has given you the best life—a life of victory, success, authority, joy and laughter; a life void of sickness, diseases, poverty, defeat and death. Some people believe they have to suffer and settle for the lesser things in life. For them, it’s wrong to look good, wear nice things and live in a good home. They’re of the notion that if you live in poverty, you’ll go to heaven; but if you have all the nice things of life, you’ll probably go to hell.

That you have good things and enjoy a prosperous life on earth doesn’t mean you won’t make heaven. Some of the greatest men in heaven as revealed to us in the Word were men of means and of great substance while they were on earth. Talk about Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and David; these were no paupers! They enjoyed their lives and subdued the world of their time. Living in poverty, sickness and defeat is not at all the yardstick for those who’ll go to heaven.

Understand the will of God for your life; He made you after His own image and likeness, to live in dominion and exercise divine authority in the earth. The Bible talks about the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow (1 Peter 1:11)! That means now that you’re born again your life is for glory. There’s absolutely no need to live a defeated or miserable life. The Lord has perfected everything that concerns you; so go ahead, relish the moment and enjoy your life in Christ.

Prayer

Dear Father, I thank you for giving me all things to enjoy, having supplied all my needs according to your riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Thank you for giving me such a glorious life of joy, peace and laughter! I’m reigning in life by the power of the Holy Spirit, conscious that your divine power has given me all things that pertain to life and godliness, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

No one is questioning the spiritual benefits of ROR, no spiritual issue has been raised. If i understand correctly, they are asking accountability questions which has to do with human beings, except Pst. Chris is no longer human. Then someone else made a[b] false statement about the ROR being the most circulated book on earth after the bible. [/b]

These are the issues that need to be directly addressed. All these lengthy copy and paste essays and other things posted here are beside the point.

@Moodie
Who are they to ask about ACCOUNTABILITY questions in the Gospel? Are they God ?

If ROR being the most circulated book after Bible is a false statement, which one is the most circulated?

If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small (Proverbs 24:10).

Is it possible for a Christian to be attacked by the evil one? Yes, but it makes no diference. The attack or onslaught of the enemy against you will not amount to anything, because you’re more than a conqueror: "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4). The Bible however talks about "the evil day" (Ephesians 6:13) or "day of adversity," as read in our opening verse. It’s not a day to dread, but the day when your faith is tested.

Your faith must remain unwavering and resilient in the face of adversity; that’s what matters—not whether or not Satan and his cohorts are against you. Isaiah 54:15 (MSG) says, "If anyone attacks you, don’t for a moment suppose that I sent them, And if any should attack, nothing will come of it." Here the Lord describes the futility of the enemy’s onslaught against you; nothing will come of it! No attack, ploy, maneuvres or machinations of Satan can work against you when you stand your grounds in faith: "…Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" (James 4:7).

The word "strength" used in the opening scripture refers to your faith. When your faith is little or weak, it means your strength is small, and will not be able to withstand in the day of adversity. The cure for this is to feed more on God’s Word and put the Word to work in your life; that’s how to build your faith strong.

God doesn’t think Satan or his cohorts are factors; the factor is your faith. Ephesians 6:16 says "Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked." That sickness has attacked you is not a problem; the question is "Where is your faith?" It’s not about how bad the situation is. With faith in your spirit, every adversity will be a walkover. Your faith is the victory; so get into the Word and meditate on it consistently, and faith will be stirred in your spirit to walk through every adversity or opposition.

Confessions

I’m not moved by the physical circumstances, but I stand firmly on God’s Word, taking advantage of the faith that has been imparted to my spirit to ward off the fiery missiles of the adversary. I declare that the power of God is released to cause a desired change as I put my faith to work. Hallelujah!

Give Him Your Cares! · thursday, february 9th · Page Visits (872)

Pastor Anita

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? (Matthew 6:25).

The verse above is an invitation from the Master for you to trust Him with your life. He wants you to have no care or anxiety whatsoever about anything, because God loves you greatly, and tenderly cares for you. He’s saying to you "Give me your cares!"

As a child of God you must come to the point in your life where you know, without a doubt, that God is not only big enough to take care of you but equally willing to do so. He’s more willing for you to live and enjoy life to the full than you could ever be. This takes the stress out of life; knowing that you serve a loving and compassionate Father, whose desire is for you to live a victorious life. The reason many people in the world are unhappy and burdened with lots of worries, being surfeited with the cares of life is that they’re yet to accept His invitation: they haven’t given Him their cares.

1 Peter 5:7 says "Casting all your cares upon him; for he careth for you." God cares for you personally; that means He knows you and He’s concerned about you, therefore trust Him with your life. The Psalmist knew what it meant to trust the Lord this way; he was so sure of God’s ability and willingness to guarantee his safety hence declared with all certainty: "Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me" (Psalm 138:7). This should be your attitude as a child of God.

Too many are focusing on the challenges and problems they’re facing, and as a result, lose sight of God’s grace and presence with them. By meditating on their challenges they short-circuit the power of God from working on their behalf. Refuse to dwell on whatever challenges you may be facing right now! Rather, think about the ability of the Spirit; He’s all-great and powerful and can put you over every adversity.

Prayer

I refuse to fret or worry over anything because God loves me and He’s big and powerful enough to take care of me! Therefore, I live victoriously in rest today, having cast all my cares upon Him. Blessed be His Name.

Believe And Receive Love · Wednesday, February 8th · Page Visits (1,086)

Pastor Chris

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins (1 John 4:10).

God created man with the ability to love and receive love. So love is not only meant to be given, it’s also to be received. Receiving love is equally as important as giving it. Some people struggle in their relationship with God and with others because they don’t know how to receive love. Imagine a wife who says to her husband, "I know you really don’t love me." Such a woman is unknowingly dousing the love her husband has for her. The man may not be able to explain it, but he’ll gradually tend to love her less. The same will happen with the man who thinks his wife doesn’t love him.

Love has to be believed and received. It has to be acted upon. The Bible tells us about one of the disciples of Jesus named John. He described himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved (John 21:20). This doesn’t suggest that the Lord loved John more than the other disciples; He loved them all equally. Any one of them could have placed his head on the Master’s chest (John 13:23), but only John believed and received the Master’s love enough to do so. That’s the right response to love.

John’s boldness to describe himself as one beloved of the Master wasn’t rooted in pride; rather, it was based on complete trust. He caught the picture of the Master’s love and dared to believe he was the object of such unfeigned and unwavering love. The Bible says the love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). It’s however up to you to choose how much of that love you’re going to receive and express. It’s a personal response which, when understood, attracts even more love to you.

Prayer

Dear Father, I thank you for lavishing your unconditional love on me, and for sending Jesus to be the propitiation for my sins. My lips shall praise you, my King, for I see from your Word today that I’m the object of your love and apple of your eyes. I love and adore you in return, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Politics / Is Nairaland On Twitter ? If No: by princejude(m): 5:15pm On Feb 02, 2012
In one of the past posts, some people were asking what is twitter ? Make I try answer the query small. Pls me I no dey work for twitter(I don't even know the owner) but I dey enjoy am well well. So this is not advert but to share my 50 kobo idea about twitter.

Twitter is a social network site (www.twitter.com) that helps you to find out what's happening, right now, with the people and organizations you care about - such as the current news updates about the people, places or organizations.

If you are using Airtel(Zain) line, you can sign up to be receiving the tweets through your phone FREE.
To sign up with your Airtel line, do the following:

1. Send "SIGNUP" as sms/text message to 40404 then wait for their reply. In the reply they will ask you for your username.
2. Send your username to 40404. If your username has been taken by someone, they will suggest one for you, use the one they suggested and wait for their reply.
3. Send "follow NigeriaNewsdesk" (this handle with update you with the latest Nigerian news like Boko Aharamu, politics, bombing, etc

Note that each of these 3 sms you sent to sign up will cost you N10 each (totalling N30) and all their tweets/text to your phone is free.

With this Airtel setting you don't need to be online before you can hear what is happening around you.

I will like others to share their own idea with twitter.

The Roadmap to Africa’s Technology Revolution

0. Introduction
You know it is difficult to convince a lot of Nigerians that Nigeria is a poor country. Most of us
believe that Nigeria is rich and the only problem is the misuse of the wealth. While I agree that
we have the resources that can make us into a rich country, I must however say that there is a
difference between having a potential and actual wealth.
Of course we have a large GDP - the second largest in Africa. But our GDP is small compared to
our population. Hong Kong is a city smaller than Lagos but their GDP is on par with the entire
country of Nigeria. And of course we have misused our oil wealth. We have failed to invest in
infrastructure. Prove? Egypt. Egypt’s GDP is roughly the same as that of Nigeria, but you cannot
compare the infrastructure in cities like Cairo and Alexandria with any place in Nigeria.
Proof that we are a poor country:

1. The richest man in Nigeria is not as rich as one 26 year old guy in America. I am talking about
Mark Zuckerberg the founder of Facebook. It is not possible to be as rich as Bill Gates in a
country where the GDP is only about 200 billion dollars. Unless if Nigeria is a kingdom and you
are the king!

2. Absence of Mega projects.
Our gross domestic product of 200 billion dollars implies that each Nigerian is producing,
saving/investing and spending about 16000 naira per month. Of course this is not shared equally.
Some have access to billions while others are getting hundreds of naira or nothing. So if your
approach to riches is to get a bigger slice of the national cake, then you getting rich will
definitely lead to more poverty.
But there is another way: Making the cake larger, by creating wealth through production. We
will reduce our dependence on imports and we will even have excess to export. This will lead to
job creation and an increase in investment and economic growth. You will become rich and at
the same time you will be helping to eliminate poverty.
We need to grow our economy to half a trillion dollar economy (equivalent to 45000 naira output
per citizen per month). This would have more than achieved the vision 2020 plan to make
Nigeria among the top 20 economies of the world. According to our roadmap, this will happen
by 2025.
Lofty dreams and visions are nothing new in Nigeria. We had similar promises in the past:
Education for all by the year 200; Vision 2010; Vision 20 2020. We are very good at shifting the
goal post when the target is approaching. So why should Nigerians bother with the roadmap
when all previous attempts were only monumental failures that failed to leave behind any major
impact?
The roadmap is different. It is not a promise. It is not even a plan. It is a resolution and a
commitment. Similar to when JFK made a commitment to put a man on the moon within a
decade. It is a challenge we have given ourselves as citizens, engineers, academics, and
entrepreneurs. That it is possible for a Black nation to be one of the most developed countries in
the world. And that we can achieve this in a few years. We are sure that it is possible, but the
only question is how? Sincerely we have no detailed answer. We only have two things: the
roadmap which is a map to our destination with signposts along the way to reassure us that we
are on the right track. The second is the scientific method. We shall employ the scientific method
to discover how to move from one milestone to the next until we get to our destination. So we
are going to experiment a lot. And we will keep an open mind - ready to discard any ideas that
prove to be a failure in favor of anything that works.
Africa faces an uncertain future in a rapidly changing world. The world is at the threshold of
rapidly accelerating technological development. The coming revolutions in biotechnology,
robotics and artificial intelligence will render most of our current sources of wealth such as
natural resources and even labor insignificant.
So why did we fail in the past?
Africa has always been an isolated part of the world. We have never faced any major military
challenge from the outside world. So there was no real incentive to develop technologically.
Most of the technologically advanced countries today owe their technology to their efforts to
fight foreign domination or to dominate others. The parties to the two world wars emerged to be
the big super powers. Even the vanquished; Japan and Germany are among the 4 largest
economies today. Necessity indeed is the mother of invention. The space race was as a result of
rivalry between the USA and the former USSR. The growth of Silicon Valley is one of the
products of this competition. (DARPA was created in response to the Soviet lunching of the
Sputnik)
China has a very long history of fighting against foreign aggression. The great wall was built
over a period of about 800 years to keep the Mongolians out.
And because we were not technologically developed and our warfare was primitive, it was not
possible for rival kingdoms to dominate one another. So we ended up with relatively small
kingdoms. As a result it was easy for the colonial masters to defeat us. And even after the end of
colonization, there is little that holds us together as a country in terms of history, culture, and
language. Unlike in Britain for example where the English dominated. Similarly the Han
ethnicity is dominant in China.
The result is we have adopted foreign culture and unfortunately we have no sense of respect for
that culture. So at the end we are a people with no respect for any culture. For example, most of
us insist in teaching our children our mother tongues as their first language. But when the kid
starts going to school, he is taught in English, a language he does not understand. This is why our
children struggle with education. At secondary school they are still learning to read, while his
mates in other parts of the world are already engaged in problem solving and creative thinking.
Why it will work this time:
Most of our previous developmental programs were planned from the top and based on models
developed in the western world. It did not take local realities into consideration. For example,
there is no merit in too much emphasis on intellectual property protection at a time when we are
at a disadvantage. Our emphases right now should be on how to disseminate knowledge even it
means we trample on intellectual property of other countries at times. Also some western
business model that places a lot of value on design and development may not be workable at the
beginning. For example, if a customer asked us to design a product for them we cannot charge
him say 4 million naira for such an intangible thing as files in a computer. The model that can
work in Africa is that of partnership, where the designer is entitled to royalties.
Our approach is grass roots oriented. We will provide knowledge to the masses and show them
how they can use knowledge to generate wealth. Our program will use the scientific method and
control theory to socially engineer a change. We will use positive feedback to create a runaway
growth in the economy. We will discuss this in details later when we present the signposts of the
roadmap.

1. Microscale Embedded

The ultimate goal of Microscale is to use technology to address the problem of poverty in Africa.
Africa’s poverty is due mainly to the limited level of skills and usable knowledge among its
population. Most goods and services consumed in Africa is either produced outside of Africa or
requires the presence of foreign expatriates to produce.
Africa’s raw materials alone are no longer enough to solve its myriads of problems. Today’s
economy is often referred to as a knowledge driven economy. And rich countries are no longer
those that have natural resources, but those who possess the know-how and expertise to manage
information and use knowledge to produce innovative products and services.
Information technology is the backbone of the knowledge economy. It runs the computers and
the networks that enable people create and process information and collaborate with one another.
Embedded computers give intelligence to our factories and they form the nucleus of our gadgets
like phones, mp3 players and cameras. They can be found in even traditional home appliances
like the TV and washing machine.
Therefore if Africa is going to solve the problem of poverty, it must master Information
Technology not just as a user or consumer of its products but also as a producer.
The strategy of Microscale is two faceted. One, Microscale will be a model of how to start-up a
small hi-tech business in Africa. The aim is to show the viability of hi-tech business in Africa.
Secondly, Microscale will provide services that will enable other hi-tech companies to get
started.
The goal is to have a critical mass of SMEs that will transform Africa’s business environment
into an ecosystem suitable for hi-tech manufacturing and to make it possible for Africans to
participate in the 21st century global economy as a contributor.
Microscale’s slogan is “sowing the seeds to Africa’s Technology Revolution”. And we hope to
be the seed that germinates and gives rise to many trees that will become Africa's Microsoft,
Intel, Apple and Google of tomorrow. Governments have a large role to play in this effort. But
we believe, we as technologists, academics and entrepreneurs, we have to take the first steps.
Let’s sow the seeds first. Then we can call on the governments to help with the watering.

2. The signposts on the Roadmap
Signpost 1: the year 2011. Hi-tech products introduced
Microscale Embedded ltd introduces the first hi-tech products that are engineered by local
workforce. The CDM event of 2011 introduces some of the products and opens the eyes of
participants to the possibilities. What is new in Microscale’s approach is the use of local talent at
the design and engineering level of product development instead of the usual approach of merely
assembling in Nigeria while the design is done overseas. The Ovim tablet, which is jointly
developed by Microscale and Fasmicro, is a good example of this.
The result is a rise in local talent and a plethora of innovative products that were inspired and
developed locally.
A number of hi-tech businesses will be established and a semiconductor association of Nigeria
formed. The availability of design and manufacturing services from Microscale will enable many
graduating students to startup their businesses with minimal funds by relying on these services.

Signpost 2: 2012: Innovation springs from University students
An innovation award is introduced by Microscale in 2011. The award is given to the most
innovative project presented by a graduating undergraduate in a Nigerian university. The main
criteria for the award are its appeal to the Nigerian market as we will be looking at projects that
can be converted into products to be sold in Nigeria.
There will also be a TV show dedicated to the competition in order to inspire others and to
popularize innovative thinking among students.
