Jobs/VacanciesRe: What Digital Skills Can A 32 Year Old Learn? by princely4ever: 12:37am On Sep 17, 2024
Jashub is right. It won't happen overnight although just keep hoping.

But now, here's my own take, not much of telling you what digital skill to learn though.

If you really indeed want to learn a digital skill, learning one isn't enough, you need to acknowledge and consider some things. It's like some scientific theory involved but it's true. Once you've understood this, landing clients and opportunities becomes easy else you find yourself struggling like some do who don't get the point.

Factors involved are the gig economy, starting capital, your purpose and prospectus including your vision and strategy and not to forget the problem solving mentality and how much value you offer in the market etc. These are almost the instruments for measuring success even before jumping right into the market. You can therefore tell how learning a digital skill may work out for you, and even which. My point anyway is not to think about the digital skill alone, think about how you can make it work out, if not, at least make sure you're very good in that skill area which can help you stand out. A professional portfolio can help as well. Good luck.

Sorry you had to go through all that, unfortunately Nigeria isn't a place where employees have rights, you're just going to get exploited and you will have to put up with the horrible treatment, your friend did the right thing, invest the time you're burning to support someone's dreams for peanuts on yourself because you can't put a price on that, your freedom and most of all your mental well-being.
thanks man...

dauntless15:
His story doesn't add up, any fool can see he's just deflecting, I see no correlation between the lens and whatever he's been incarcerated for, just a disgruntled employer trying to oppress an employee, I say this because back then when I was working for someone, he really used me to the point my self esteem dropped drastically, from the verbal abuse to the mind games to the threats, untop one paltry sum he call salary which he withholds when he feels I misbehaved, this can range from not arriving somewhere in time, not doing what he says immediately he says it, and the worst crime of all is he made me do the work of two people for one pay for months, he keeps promising he will hire someone else soon but he never did, I was the cashier, I was the secretary I was everything, when he should have hired different people for different positions he leveraged my hardworking nature to do what he likes and at the end he will still withhold my salary, working for someone in Nigeria is the perfect definition of slavery, he almost accused me of stealing when I quit as well but I was vindicated before he could even start, that was the first and last time I worked for any idiot, I've been my own boss ever since, earning online and living anyhow I want, rubbish.
I had very similar experience. I don't want to narrate the whole story, because it almost feels epic until, for now, I decided to let it go following someone's advice... I had gone to the police for mistreatment, harassment, threats and threat to life.

I was cheated, used etc. Like you, I suffered verbal abuse, and made to feel like someone without any dignity.. which all came from a deluded, self-seeking, and bitter miscreant, and someone who didn't even know me as, if God permit, hope I'd land him a total shock his life

Because you offered time to work but what for what gain?

There were false claims, accusations, invented stories and lots and lots exaggerations... which all didn't add up alongside his pointless evidences

I wasted a lot of my resources working, because in the end, I was cheated and owed till today, two months salaries. And if I knew he was good-for-nothing, I wouldn't have let him go with the money I should have been paid one particular period where I helped him on an agreed task because he was understaffed... who does that? I was foolish to let it slide until out of the blue the signs started to appear. This reprobate and frustrated fellow started his passive aggression, wanting to get rid of me after using me. Because then, I noticed when he eventually managed to find one or two workers, that's when he started until it became a full-blown aggression and I started demanding my money. But this was unpaid salary of the previous month and the weeks were going by.
I can tell you, I was used and really taken advantage of.

The man's employment was especially fraudulent which I had later on discovered in the process. The working terms was what was fraudulent to be precise yet he has the effrontery and kept on ranting a working agreement we never had, written or verbal. If other prospects who would be working for him don't know this, unknowingly, they're working at their own risk and making them work at the detriment of getting paid, but it's left to them even though wanted to raise an alarm about this.

For now, I have decided to hold my peace and stick to that friend's advice and whole lots of other things he let me know which, without them, I wouldn't be listening to an advice as simple as "just let it go" which sounded like a song title from a boring singles album of a debut artiste. Meanwhile saying that isn't about the good friend who gave me the precious advice but about the villain whom I was burning resources on not only seeking justice for his offenses against me but also the amounts of money I was owed.

I got some others' advice to focus energy somewhere than him. Meanwhile that friend's really sounded like the worst advice, and foolish, but then, I knew he was right. And I wasn't one to allow someone's cowardice to overpower me or cloud my judgement. I loved being productive rather than burn energy on matters that did me no gain or aren't worth it.

It was stressful a moment, and I'm glad about sticking to the advice even if I still feel the pain of that man's wrongdoing. He truly might be a saint on the outside, but is grievously wicked, and the devil's advocate. I can say this because I wasn't the only one who got affected. I'm speaking of those who had left him understaffed. Unfortunately, I was the only one who fell into an unforeseen trap and who couldn't get paid after resigning.

Right now, being productive and moving on is all that matters. I'm glad I can actually live independent of and beyond that experience. It always turns out right for good people for good ...especially when we don't allow behaviours of bad people dictate our direction.

Depending on the kind of your project or its concept, there should be existing apis you can leverage and integrate into your app or you might need to develop one for your app from scratch. This also means you can help other developers integrate the same api of your reference

Have you built one before? This doesn't matter anyway, start with researching if that api exists otherwise consider steb B: building your own api from scratch. Regardless of any tedious effort, it's a win-win situation.

Thanks boss. Fortunately, I was able to resolve this problem the next day after I made the post, thanks to the documentation... One thing I did was to tune the connection, which provided results meaning the server selection error got fixed. Although, I encountered another error, feels less complicated to fix/less of a problem. Still I don't mind seeking help around in case it becomes challenging.

Sometimes, these errors are favourable as I document them along with their solutions. Without facing them, it would be impossible to gain problem solving skills.

Particularly, you're right about checking and restarting the server. I've learned to manage this problem too.

@PulsingPurple thanks though. At this juncture and moment, I'm using the docs and this has some info about tuning mongoose and its connection using certain options I haven't considered yet. This kind of error comes with some ambiguity. Somehow, the mongoose docs online seems to reduce it to a degree, and hopefully, I'd come to the end of it.

For now, any suggestions are welcome, would try it and see what works. Thanks again.

I don't get it. I've been stuck on this error for a while. Gladly, I was able to fix about 2-3 of them which is a relief, and I sure can't wait for another round.

The whole job is a basic test project (with mongo db). Users submit their information such as name and email, and the server processes this input/data and parses it into json format. I don't need to explain this to the experts but just so that anyone can help follow though and fix the problem...

When I first cooked with this paste, imagine my big scoops. I never knew how powerful this paste was until I saw the food I had put on fire after using the paste.

Although I felt wasteful with my scoops from the can, I knew using the paste was endless or felt as if would never be able to use it up because of its grand quantity. We're talking about a 3.15kg tomato can. Quantity aside, its quality is brilliant too, taking after its brand name. Sincerely writing this, the paste is long-lasting and highly effective for anyone who knows its power. Although, you'll learn your big lesson the first time you use it. One scoop from its can with a dessert or dinner spoon is five scoop from other pastes. Not hyping nor exaggerating, pls. If you believe these kinds of pastes exist, then you're seeing one now. It is 5x thicker, 5x richer.

The paste is refrigerated for preservation after opening.

Its price is 40k if you want to buy wink

ProgrammingFinally Got My Electron APP Running!! by princely4ever(op): 3:50pm On May 20, 2024
To be posting this right now means I'm on cloud 9 (not really into posting right now...could keep my story to my self & face my biz as I just wanna stay focused rn )

it all goes like this;
wasn't just learning how to use electron, was trying to work on an urgent project, fulltime & fullstack. At the initial stage was the concept, I didn't know what exact stack to use or even where to begin in real fact, until I did my research. my project was a software/desktop app.

(just a little backstory):
And then, I found electron which I already heard of in the world of programming - something of when I was still somewhat of a newbie. anyway, I didn't exactly know much, as I was still randomly learning programming basics, and randomly trying out different languages & technologies. You, know how as a newbie you're randomly searching things and you have so many tabs opened just to understand what you're trying to learn, lol (eventually had to focus on one thing even if most things felt interesting & exciting which were the basics of webdev; html css & js)

Moving on, months/years later when I rediscovered electron while on research for my project, and what exactly it was for ( as I was getting attuned & accustomed to very technical concepts unlike the newbie I was when I started, one who could hardly grasp those huge grammar in most websites and their documentations and could throw in the towel at anytime when I got frustrated) I decided it was exactly what I need after much study and comparing with other tools I initially wanted to try like python's tkinter. what mattered to me in essence was the gui not exactly how difficult the technology really was. I wanted to build a software, but I wasn't impressed with most tools I found. python's tkinter would have been my last option but until I found electron and settled with it.

(Here's where the story really begins, sorry I had to beat about the bush):
while starting out with electron js, things got pretty rough & challenging. one of my first aim was to load the electron window, of which without, I had made zero progress, meanwhile, for me, accomplishing it means around 50% progress of the project even thought it's not ready to be packaged as a software which is no problem as ordinarily loading windows takes almost same process with with "cmd'.

did lots of research and research, debugging after debugging. I was restless, and days turned into weeks and weeks, months. As time flew, somehow, I lost the frontend I already did for the project while still fighting on the aspect of loading electron window. I finally relapsed on the project due to some ongoing circumstances.

SO many months have passed, and finally back to it even if I lost t+he first project. It's still not a bad thing if I had to start afresh. (I've learned the essence & necessity of backups too with a strong & portable external hard-drive)

FYI, it didn't take me much time & effort to finally load my electron window. here's fact: not long did I find a video for step by step guide to watch than I finally had the app running. this meant that I didn't have to watch the tutorial again.

the whole step was really.. (don't know what to even say)... as it involved installing modules & libraries thru npm & nodejs, the backend aspect. I also noticed that while installing those modules & libraries, I had done so in God knows where instead of my project directory and a lot other issues that were both hidden & obvious (just to load a window)

meanwhile, the only issue I had in my comeback was fixing/including the 'start' keyword in my package.json file that could enable me use the "npm start" command. notice how a small issue of this kind can create big problems which had happened in the first instance.

now, what changes did I make when I decided on a comeback and second try? Here's what:

1. had to be patient (at least, better than the last time ... cos what took weeks & months took less than 24hrs to accomplish)
2. read & scrutinized docs almost carefully & thoroughly than randomly
3. one step at a time.

perhaps, nothing may have been that difficult if I had done these.

For anyone who doesn't know much about electronjs, electronjs helps build desktop apps that run on all OS including windows, mac and linux. most tools that help build and package these apps don't have this ability. the most interesting thing is how you can build using simple html, css & js but particularly how you can build along with multiple frameworks/libraries like tailwind, react etc.

Right now I am open to mentor anyone and have been thinking about developing an online/offline course for anyone interested in learning electron or want to build their own desktop apps 😉 (my experience has paved way for this grin)

sorry, you peepz had to put up with my grammar, I'd come back for editing later.

while that's a great idea, what's the point? there's clearly no huge difference, even if i actually used to do so. from experience, doing such leaves you bombarded with lots of code that may put you in a state of disarray esp. when you eventually have to debug lot of errors in your code. imagine you have to debug a 1,000 and something line of code instead of maybe a 300 in a separate file. easily navigating your code is something to talk about, too.
my piece of advice- while your friend may be right, just assigning each code to their respective files may save you the stress
