Seun: When Nigerian journalists want to make you look bad, they may add grammatical errors to your quotes. They've done it to me before.lol |
Finally, Seun has shown his Neutrality by pushing this thread to front page. Well done Sir! |
Princess2be: Story! Why has no thread on Iyabo made front page?... Sentiment aside, this trending issue in the country now should have made front page. Despite all the confirmations, no thread on Iyabo has hit the front page yet. I've been following one thread on that which has been trending since yesterday till now. It's now on the 3rd page and yet has not made front page. See it here:Seun has woefully failed to provide answer to this question which many on NL have asked. He even answered the one asked after this. Cheers! |
Seun: APC isn't paying me any cash; I'm sure that PDP has far more cash than APC. I simply made a mistake when I posted that old thread.Story! Why has no thread on Iyabo made front page?... sluggers: What is so nice of her giving a physically challengedd person her finger to kiss? Why can't she give the girl a hug?U sound so frustrated with her gesture. If she had hugged the lady, U'll still complain. Why not commend her first for the one she did? Anyway, human beings CANNOT be satisfied. |

Sambo denies blocking El-Rufai from speaking at memorial lecture. The Vice President, Namadi Sambo, and former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasir El-Rufai, are engaged in a war of words over the alleged blockage of Mr. El-Rufai from speaking at the memorial lecture organised to mark the one year anniversary of the late Governor of Kaduna State, Patrick Yakowa. Mr. El-Rufai told journalists recently that the family of the late Governor invited him to the remembrance lecture but alleged that the presence of Mr. Sambo made it impossible for the former minister to speak. However, Mr. Sambo, in a statement by his spokesperson, Umar Sani, on Tuesday, said that the former minister was using the memorial lecture as a platform to renew his usual verbal vituperation against the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, this time, specifically directing them at the Vice President. Mr. Sambo said he needed to respond to the allegations raised by Mr. El- Rufai to set the records straight. He insisted that the lecture was organised by the Yakowa family and that all those who were billed to speak, going by the programme, spoke. “For someone who was invited by the family to speak, one wonders why (Mr. El-Rufai’s) name was conspicuously absent in the programme. Why would the presence of the Vice President generate any problem for him? Was he not aware that the Vice President was a Special Guest and was billed to speak at the event, which was widely advertised in our national dailies,” Mr. Sani asked. Mr. El-Rufai said he had wanted to talk about developments in Kaduna State, from where he and the Vice President hail. “My intention was to honour Yakowa and raise fundamental issues affecting the development of Kaduna State presently. I was invited by Yakowa’s family to attend the memorial lecture, and I was billed to speak there. But when Vice President Sambo and the PDP national chairman arrived, I knew there would be problem,” Mr. El-Rufai said. He also said that he had wanted to raise questions on how the late governor’s legacies were being destroyed. “My task was to eulogise Yakowa and what he stood for, then raise fundamental questions regarding present situation of our state. Are they really preserving Yakowa’s legacies? What about local government funds? The 23 local government areas of the state are in bondage; their finances are being withheld and public funds are being mismanaged. Was that what Yakowa did? Absolutely no. This is why they are afraid and they stopped me from speaking but they cannot hide the reality of our predicament,” he said. The Vice President’s spokesperson, in the his statement, asked if the memorial lecture was the only platform were Mr. El-Rufai could have raised fundamental questions on the current events in the state “As a concerned Nigerian, does he not have other avenues to air his views on the happenings in the state? We believe that this is the cacophony and the ranting of an Accidental Politician who savours the joy of echoing directionless vituperations at responsible citizens. We believe the idea was to embark on a wild goose chase aiming to attack the Presidency for political expediency. Succinctly put, we hasten to say that no such thing happened at all,” Mr. Sani said. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/151788-vp-sambo-el-rufai-tangle-speaking-slot-yakowa-memorial-lecture.html

ceo4eva: Iyabo ObasanjoMods, kindly move this thread to front page. It's been Confirmed! |
ceo4eva: To be Honest, I doubt Vanguard can publish such a letter against OBJ if it's not true. Considering the background of Vanguard (South West) Newspaper and the courageous way they have continued to defend this story, It's likely to be TRUE. We all know OBJ is NOT a Saint, even though APC remains supportive of him. There are some contents in the letter that need to be addressed especially Corruption, but don't forget GEJ is/was a product of OBJ. I guess he's annoyed because he no longer controls and dictate to GEJ. GEJ on his own part has refused to respond, thereby further annoying OBJ. Why is OBJ ranting over his daughter's 12-page letter when he wrote an 18-page letter to GEJ?Kudos 2 u. This is one of the best unbiased posts I've seen on Nairaland in recent times. I like the way u analysed without sentiments. |
samuelkaykay: We have to applaud vanguard and brave Iyabo.OBJ should know that when you point one finger on someone ,four will point at you. This season, anybody, power, spirit that said you will not succeed, may God frustrate them and give you victory in JESUS name.ON POINT! I admire the courage and bravery of Vanguard Newspaper on this issue. They are not yielding to threats and intimidation. They have published their story and still standing solidly behind their report, by providing more evidence and backup. Kudos to Vanguard. We Call it 'Investigative Journalism'. |

THE United States has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to fulfil his promises to implement developmental projects in the troubled states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa in order to curb Boko Haram insurgency in the region. The three states have been under the emergency rule since May. US Permanent Representatives to the United Nations, Samantha Power, who said this in her opening remarks at a meeting with some civil society organisations in Abuja on Wednesday, also expressed worry about what she called uncoordinated security crackdown on Boko Haram members. This, she noted, had resulted in loss of lives of many innocent people. She said, “The United States is concerned by some of the stories we hear of inhumane detention practices in Nigeria, and I have discussed this with officials here. Security crackdowns that do not discriminate between legitimate targets and innocent civilians are both counterproductive and wrong. “We know how hard it is to fight insurgency and terrorism, but we have also seen how much more effective we are when we put the welfare of the local population at the heart of our efforts.” The envoy, who regretted that the US and Nigeria had been targets of terrorists, said the Nigerian government must implement policies that would help lay a foundation for longer term progress. “I was pleased to hear President Jonathan’s announcement earlier this month of his development plan for the North-East. Efforts to fight poverty, create jobs, and respect the dignity and rights of all people would help lay a foundation for longer term progress. My government will be urging President Jonathan to fulfil his commitment to implement his plan as soon as possible,” she said. Power said the meeting was called to have a candid conversation with civil society organisations to know the challenges confronting them in promoting free, fair, and transparent elections, fighting corruption, advancing responsible, effective, and rights-respecting approaches to insecurity. She observed that the US and Nigeria shared much in common because they “both have vibrant civil societies, whose promotion of civic engagement was key to advancing important reforms and making government accountable to its citizens. Power said, “In Nigeria, civil society organisations like yours have tirelessly advocated for increasing the credibility of elections and citizens’ participation in the electoral process, which is so vital for any democracy. You all have also worked to highlight the impact of poor governance and public corruption on the average Nigerian citizen who wants to contribute meaningfully to society. “Tragically, we have both been targeted by terrorists. The brutality of the attacks against your people is shocking. In responding to these attacks, it is essential that we do so consistent with the most fundamental of international human rights norms.” She said efforts of the civil society could help Nigeria to empower women, create new opportunities for young people, expose and curb corruption, strengthen democratic institutions, and ensure that the electoral process became free and fair. Expressing the US concern over the irregularities in last month’s governorship election in Anambra State, Power said her country would follow closely the next governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states. “The 2015 election will draw global attention and can – if you push hard enough – prove a model for all of Africa, if they are free, fair, and transparent,” she added. http://www.punchng.com/news/bharam-fulfil-promises-to-borno-others-us-tells-jonathan/

President Goodluck Jonathan remains the best President Nigeria has ever had. Ride On Sir! |
President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday hit back at his critics and opposition parties, accusing them of painting his administration “bad before the global community.” He therefore warned that he would not allow their selfish ambition for the 2015 general election to destroy the country. His warning is coming six days after an 18-page letter in which a former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, made scathing remarks about his administration was made public. It also came less than 24 hours after the opposition All Progressives Congress called on the National Assembly to immediately commence impeachment proceeding against Jonathan for alleged gross misconduct. Although he has yet to personally respond to Obasanjo’s letter and the APC’s call for his impeachment, the Peoples Democratic Movement and the Nigeria Labour Congress on Monday, said he needed to do so because the allegations levelled against him by the former President were weighty. At a lecture and award ceremony in Abuja on Monday, Jonathan told his critics to be cautious in attacking his administration because it was the selfish ambition of some politicians that led to the “wrongful overthrow” of the Shehu Shagari administration in 1983. He was represented at the annual lecture, the third in a series by Nigerian Pilot Newspapers and Nigerian Newsworld, by the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku. The President claimed that the criticisms against his administration were not constructive enough to challenge his development strides. Jonathan, who said he had developed a “thick skin against such criticisms”, however advised politicians to thread with caution as their actions could destabilise the democractic structures already in place in the country. He said, “There is a difference between ambition and reality. Go for your ambition, nobody is disturbing you because it is a free world. Go and compete, but don’t pull down this country called Nigeria because of your personal ambition. It is unacceptable. “I think there is a difference between debates and insults. I reject insults and the fact that I am a public officer doesn’t give anybody the liberty to insult me. Most of the time you cannot detach the Office of the President and honour of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “There are people who are honestly trying to put things down for this country to move on. I think we can see the difference between facts and fiction. “Let us not continue to behave as if we can pull down our own house; we as politicians and public servants should not behave as if we were picked on the streets. You don’t just go and pour acid on the faces of public officers. “When Shagari was overthrown in 1983, there was a lot of noise that the government was not doing anything and nothing was not said about Shagari’s regime. “Shagari was overthrown amidst lies….The greatest shame of this country is Ajaokuta Steel Complex. If Shagari was there, by 1986, he would have completed Ajaokuta.” But Maku took a swipe at the media, stressing that on a daily basis, they were awash with highly fictional information. He said, “If you look through our media reports today, we see insults and abuses, every day. If somebody did not abuse Mr. President, it will look as if there is no journalism on that day. “We are talking about our country, our nation’s institutions and democracy; we are talking about setting standards for this democracy, standards of behaviour, standards of conduct and standards of principles of behaviour and every democracy must be parliamentary. We should not go personal, but we are going too personal.” Maku compared the media to a mirror, which when broken, gives a false image. He said, “We must not destroy the mirror and present the image as ugly. “The mirror is very important in conveying the good image of our people. We have completely ignored issues on the ground and we are embarking on personality debates. “The way we are sensationalising the development of this nation in public debates, is so annoying and it is not supposed to be so. I am a big time journalist. “But there is a difference between reporting events and articulating a position because the media are supposed to articulate public debates. When the media embark on abuse and insults, the people will be confused.” He also stated that the liberty being enjoyed by Nigerians had been taken for granted simply because “the President believes in the rule of law.” But as he spoke, the PDM, like the APC, called on the National Assembly to impeach Jonathan if he failed to defend himself against the allegations by Obasanjo. It also advised Nigerians to stop trusting him since he had been unable to do so. The party argued that the allegations contained in the former President’s letter were earth-shaking. In a statement on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ahmadu Abubakar, the PDM listed all the allegations in the letter and said the President, in his interest and that of the country, must address them. It said it was bad that Jonathan , instead of addressing the issues, resorted to crude means of answering them. The statement reads in part,” If the President cannot defend himself of these allegations, he should come clean and openly say so instead of resorting to the dubious tactic of non response. “If he cannot defend himself against these grave allegations levelled against him by no less a personality than … a person who knows fully the implications of what he says, there is no reason why Nigerians should trust him a day longer than necessary with the fate of their country. “In which case, he should either promptly resign or be impeached.” It also called on the National Assembly to fully and painstakingly investigate Obasanjo’s allegations by first, asking the President to fully explain himself. Also, the NLC called on Jonathan to respond to the “weighty” allegations against his administration. The congress, through its Acting General Secretary, Mr. Chris Uyot, told one of our correspondents that Jonathan’s response was needed because the allegations bordered on national security and the management of the nation’s economy. It also urged the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to ensure that its lingering internal crisis did not engulf the country. The labour group argued that since the letter by Obasanjo became public knowledge, Nigerians had patiently waited for a response from Jonathan. It said, “The issues raised are weighty enough for the President to respond to. One of the issues borders on national security while another is on the management of the economy. “As far as we are concerned, Obasanjo wrote a letter to the President and made those allegations, and Nigerians want him to respond to the said letter. The NLC would respond to the controversy at the appropriate time.” Obasanjo had in the letter dated December 2, 2013 and titled, “Before it is too late,” accused Jonathan of taking actions inimical to the well- being of the nation. The former President also alleged that the President was committing anti-party activities against the ruling PDP because of his political ambition. Obasanjo, who accused Jonathan of training snipers and putting 1, 000 politicians under watch, alleged that he was also dividing the country along ethnic and religious lines. But the NLC said that the ruling class in the country had been engulfed by a war which Nigerian workers must avoid. It said that workers should be watchful and vigilant enough to avoid being drawn into taking sides in the fray among the ruling elite. The congress added, “This is not the time for sentiments; it calls for reflection, we all know the problem of Nigeria. Let the PDP not make its problem a national problem.” http://www.punchng.com/news/apc-others-attacking-me-because-of-2015-jonathan/ |
The two best graduating first class degree holders of the Lead City University, Ibadan Oyo State, share with TEMITAYO FAMUTIMI the secret of their academic success For recording outstanding academic success, two female students of Lead City University, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nafisat Olabisi and Izojie Imafidion have again lent credence to the maxim, “What a man can do, a woman can do better.” The duo emerged the best graduating students, beating 1,819 others at the university’s combined fifth and sixth convocation held on Friday. While 22-year-old Olabisi of the Department of Economics garnered a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.72 to emerge the best student for the 2012/2013 set, Imafidion (24) of the Department of Mass Communication and Media Technology clinched the overall best award in the 2012/2013 set, scoring a CGPA of 4.78. Following this accomplishment, the two received the prestigious Chancellor’s Prize amid a rousing ovation from members of the university community and other guests on the occasion. Besides, they took home departmental and faculty prizes for academic excellence. But apart from having the common gift of academic excellence, the two see life, particularly social life, from the same prism. In separate chats with our correspondent, they explained that they shunned “campus love” during their undergraduate days. That singular decision, they acknowledge, helped them greatly in the pursuit and accomplishment of their success. Sharing her survival strategy, Olabisi notes that the issue of campus love never occupied her consciousness. According to her, instead of expending time and money on keeping such a relationship, she gave special attention to her books. But were there male admirers coming her way? To this, she answers in the affirmative, noting that pressure from the male folk was always there. Olabisi explains, “There is nothing bad in going into a relationship in school, but you must know how to balance your love and academic life. However, I was not into any relationship while I was at the university. To me, relationship is all about money and time. “From my observation at LCU, if you go into a relationship, you will expect so much from your boyfriend while your boyfriend also expects much from you too. How much was I collecting as upkeep allowance, that would make me buy between N7,000 and N10,000 gifts for my boyfriend in a month? “I had so many male friends that hanged out with me and, in fact, six of them walked up to me and asked me out. But I rejected their proposals. The financial implication and commitment was scary and I stayed away and they said so many things to me that I was too harsh. I just told them no and stayed away.” On whether she ever had a crush on somebody before, Olabisi declares, “I had a crush on someone but he was not a student of the school. We met in Ibadan and we were at some point intimate as we once kissed. Although we are still friends, the crush is all gone.” For Imafidion, an indigene of Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, who lost her father at age eight, doing her mother proud was her preoccupation and not playing the campus love game. She notes that the opportunity to pursue her programme was precious to her, so much that she “did not want to waste my time on one particular person” on campus. She explains that despite being in a relationship with a guy, who was not a student of the school, she still managed to keep him at bay and refused him to pay her a visit on campus. She adds, “At the university, a student has to decide what he or she wants to do with his or her time. For me, I came here (LCU) with a particular purpose in mind and that was to make the best out of the opportunity I had. So, there was no time for partying or campus relationship. “I did not just have time for a relationship on campus. Even when I had a relationship with someone outside campus, I practically had no visitor, except my sister; not even my boyfriend. My dream was just to come out with a very good grade and make my mum proud.” Imafidion, who gained admission to the university via a diploma programme, explains that her first task on resumption in the school was to reach out to some of the then best students in her set. According to her, after identifying the high flyers, she resolved to be among the best and the decision propelled her to seek and secure a spot at the Mass Communications library and the school’s main library. She adds, “I must say that coming out with a first class and as the overall best graduating student in my set was challenging and fun at the same time. I was not the only one topping the class, as my classmates were extremely good. For me to top the class, it took a lot of hard work and dedication,” the 2006 graduate of Ekpan Secondary School, Effurun, Delta State, notes. Declaring that her social life at the university was nothing to write home about, Imafidion says she only once attended a party throughout her three-year stay in the institution. Even at that, the party, she quickly adds, was the departmental Awards Night during her final year – in which she was deeply involved by virtue of her position as the general secretary of the departmental association. Imafidion, who completed her National Youth Service Corps scheme in September, again acknowledges that her experience as a teacher during the compulsory one-year programme has reinforced her drive to become a university teacher. “The classroom is the only place where I feel very comfortable. I find fulfilment in the classroom cum school settings. I will be furthering my education by pursuing a Master’s degree at the University of Ibadan as soon as the Academic Staff Union of Universities suspends its industrial action,” she notes tingling with sensation. On the possibility of her getting married soon, Imafidion says, “I wouldn’t want to dwell on this because I am a very private person.” Also, Olabisi, an indigine of Saki, Oyo State, who secured university admission the same year she completed her secondary education at Tower Gate Private School, Ipaja, Lagos, is used to academic success. With four distinctions from the core subjects she sat for at the Senior School Certificate Examination in 2009, and a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination score of 256, it was not difficult for her to secure a spot to study her dream course. The Economics graduate, who notes that private university education in Nigeria is rigorous, says her stay in the LCU was not a walkover. For instance, she explains that Financial Accounting courses, which are general courses for all business- related disciplines in her faculty, gave her tough times, forcing her to consult her lecturers, who assisted her in solving knotty areas of the subject. She adds, “The number of students in my class was sizable, making the facilities on the ground go round – unlike in public universities where students unable to get themselves a sit hang on windows or stand while lectures are ongoing. “Besides, I had easy access to my lecturers to ask questions on difficult aspects of my courses. I read for a minimum of four hours in a day but during examination periods, I could go all out and read all through the day. A corner of one of our lecture theatres was my favourite spot,” she adds. Olabisi, like Imafidion, wants to pursue a Master’s degree in Economics in the United States as soon as she completes her NYSC programme next year. But unlike Imafidion, she remarks that the Master’s degree is to enable her to fulfil her dream of working in a multi- national corporation rather than becoming a university teacher. Besides Olabisi and Imafidion, 23 others bagged first class grades, while 427 had second class Upper grades. The university also bestowed its academic honours on some eminent Nigerians, including, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade (D.sc Business Administration); seasoned physiotherapist, Dr. Thompson Oshin; a banker, Falil Abina (Dsc. Banking and Fiannce); and the Group Managing Director, Odua Investment Company Limited, Bayo Jimoh (D.Sc. Business Administration). The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Olufemi Onabajo, who tagged the graduands as “enterprise graduates” urged them never to allow themselves to be “overwhelmed” by challenges. He urged them to utilise the knowledge garnered from the school to create jobs and be employers of labour rather than job seekers. The VC adds, “It is no mean feat to pass through our academic rigour. You have been trained with a difference as we have instilled in you courage and boldness. You have been taught never to be overwhelmed by any situation, no matter how intimidating it may appear. Go and excel like your predecessors.” http://www.punchng.com/education/we-shunned-campus-love-first-class-graduates/
