It is the New Year and we are super excited. Many of us have created a list of goals and resolutions for the New Year. Have you considered creating our financial goals and assessing our financial health?

You probably spend a lot of time thinking about your physical fitness; with questions like how often should you work out? What type of diet should you be on? As nice as these are, have you ever spent time thinking about your finances? Have you calculated how much you saved or spent last year? What is your current net worth? What are your financial goals? How do you hope to achieve your financial goals for this year? grin

Romance / Cooking, A Cultural Requirement For Women? by princesspeju(f): 4:44pm On Oct 18, 2017
And Thou shall therefore know how to cook for thine future husbands---11th Commandment

Recently, we had an argument at the office over cooking being the major criterion on marriage checklist. After a very impromptu survey, most men agreed to this standard and proceeded to give other criteria they expect their woman to have.

Understanding the context of the African culture we live in, there are specific gender-role expectations within the institution of marriage. Imagining a man as a househusband is extremely difficult to wrap our minds around. “What! He must have clearly been bewitched by his unfortunate wife”, everyone would be sure to ask. In fact, just the amount of prayers rained daily on him would make him realize his mistake. A man who is not capable of financing his home is another type of scum according to our society. Men are allocated roles that are considered to be masculine, such as providing for and protecting the family. The reverse is unthinkable.

Women are generally given roles that are primarily household and nurturing, and cooking tops that list. According to Wikipedia, cooking is the art, technology, craft of preparing food for consumption with or without the use of heat. As a little girl, a woman is trained to cook for her household, while some fall in love with the art of cooking, others don’t. The Science and lore of the kitchen appeal to many ladies and is relatively done with ease and a great deal of comfort. It should however not be mistaken as something every woman loves to do.

Mageirocophobia, the fear of cooking is clearly a word that does not exist in our context. What does it even mean for an African woman to be afraid of cooking? This and many more questions would be asked.

It is generally assumed that a woman who can’t cook is lazy, and no matter her educational qualification or attainment of success, she is looked at with a disdain. Arguments occur even in using technological advancement to enhance her cooking, as she is faced with much adversity.

Not even cases of health-related issues, for instance, asthma, or pregnancy or even eye challenges prevent these women from this divine call. While giving them their rightful due, many men compromise and assist in this household chore. Some do when they have their various reasons, while some men just love to cook.

Not going against the ethical codes that have been laid down, talk of gender equity will surely have my head bitten off. Breaking the silence on households that operate against the norm would be sacrilegious.

In all, it's best to abide by rules that will not rock your marriage and not be stiff in asserting roles.

Romance / The Untruths About Truth In Relationship by princesspeju(f): 5:03pm On Sep 11, 2017
A healthy relationship is one when they are mutual respect and understanding. Being honest in a relationship is accepting responsibility for self, admitting when you are wrong, communicating openly and honestly, keeping your word, not making excuses for your partner’s or for your own actions. A relationship is built on truth rather than game playing. However, when do you draw a line in saying the truth in a relationship?
When does one separate between facts, beliefs and truth? if falsehood is the opposite of truths, what then is this truth? Can Truths be the evidence of what we see, or hear, or the absence of such evidence falsehood?
Let me go back to what I know best, Literature, Othello accuses Desdemona of cheating based on Iago's testimony, hey, everyone claims Othello is just a jealous hothead, but really, the facts were evidently evident for anyone to see. Too bad it ended up as a sad story, but if facts are always true, how does one dilute the falsehood surrounding the truth.
The relationship is always based on belief. Agreeing to go into one, should be to build trust and respect your partner's truth if not why waste your time. If you notice you are with a serial untrustworthy species, maybe you should wait for that ship out.
For I know my truths may be your untruths but can two walk together except they are agreed? Honesty and Trust in a relationship are when people can tell each other truth even when the situation is difficult. The undead cannot hide from the dead at his gravesite because surely that which is hidden would be uncovered. A tale like a white lie happens to be the last straw that breaks the camel's back. Somethings are better not said, it's not lying it just sweeping under the carpet. Well, I sincerely hope the carpets don't get cleaned up.
One reason why it is difficult, to be honest with each other is simple, lack of trust leads to avoidance of truths as a result of worry and jealousy. Jealousy is a natural human feeling but the way we handle jealousy matters a lot. Many a person allows jealousy to get out of hand and become obsessive, control freak robots.
Sometimes our fears cause us to flee from listening and communicating with our partners, we speak surely, but what we do most times is grunts and nods our anxiety, because we fear our fears would drive us apart without noticing the lacuna we have created.
Our Truths may correspond with our realities but that does not mean our reality is the truth. If we feel Truth is the absence of falsehood, perhaps we may have to rethink those grey edges staring at our opinions. Bottom Line: Honesty and Respect are the only way to be comfortable about telling our truths in our relationship.

Music/Radio / Nigerian's Love For Music And Nation Building by princesspeju(f): 4:49pm On Sep 11, 2017
That feeling you have when you find your feet tapping to that song beat you've argued that you couldn't be bothered with. Whether we ignore or observe trends, we are going to be bothered by our airwaves' playlist. You can educate your mind or your children not to listen to them, but you will have to bite your tongue when the lyrics start echoing from your lips.

Argue as much as you want, but the stirring or animating power of music entails emotional arousal. We turn to music because we need it; because of its ability to move us; to induce feelings and moods and states of mind.

In Nigeria, our songs somehow 'reflect' or 'represent' the people, the era and the generation. Music as a bedrock for popular entertainment serves as a vehicle for national identity and nation building in a multicultural setting such as Nigeria. Ask any young adult on the streets about the President, he/she may be in a dilemma over the answer but interrogate about a street anthem and be amazed.

I have met many two-three-year-olds who cannot recite the country’s anthem, however, they know the lyrics to songs. Some parents would ban their children from watching contents with secular music but forget that their children would interact with the society at one point or the other.

Music is an important element in every society. It is a powerful language that can transcend certain barriers and bring people together. Lusensky (2010) attempts to explain the importance of this notion when he writes: Why is music such a social force, especially among the youth? Perhaps it's because music is so closely tied to our sense of identity and self. Therefore, Music has substantial social benefits because it can display a person’s sense of self and uniqueness while also providing him or her common ground with others with similar musical tastes.

Here are several ways our society has been influenced by our secular musicians:

Last week, some youths took to social media to protest the rumoured ban of Olamide’s “WO” by the Federal Ministry of Health. The Ministry had banned the video for promoting smoking of tobacco which is alleged to cause millions of deaths. While the matter has been resolved, this drives the efficacy of music as a powerful message tool. Millions of young Nigerians smoke tobacco daily, there are even adverts of them, but a music video is what draws the attention of the Ministry of Health. grin
