Nairaland / General / Gully Erosions Swallow Homes, Farms In Ekwulumili, Anambra State(pics) by Prisschi: 8:42am On Aug 20, 2021
Gully Erosions Swallow Homes, Farms In Ekwulumili, Anambra State

People of Umudim village in Ekwulumili, Nnewi South Local Government of Anambra say they are living in constant fear over gully erosion sweeping away homes and farmlands in the area.

They are crying to the international community through the Nigerian Erosion Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), Nigerian Federal Government and Anambra State Government to come to their rescue from the disaster they have lived with for over 40 years.

Ekwulumili is a community known largely for farming and has a with a large population of indigenous people.

Ekwulumili shares borders with Amichi, Igboukwu, Unubi, Akwaihedi and Orsumenyi

Visitors to some of the sites were stricken with awe as the gaping gully measuring over 40 in width and 50 metres in depth continued to expand at an alarming speed.

This natural disaster is has displaced over 500 families with their livelihood and is threatening to wipe out the people from their god given natural habitat.

Some of the people directly affected by the disaster said they have lost their ancestral land where they were supposed to build on and cultivate.

Mrs Charity Ezeoke, who lives on the side of the erosion, said they lived in constant fear of losing their house because it was a few feet away from it.

Ezeoke said the erosion had been there since she was a young girl and that efforts made to correct it had failed.

She called on the Anambra government to relocate them before they lose their lives alongside property.

"Whenever it rains, the way it pulls trees and earth sounds like an earthquake and makes us live in fear all the time.

"Government should help us control the erosion or even come and evacuate us because we don't have peace," she said.

Mr Chukwura Ntagu, an indigene of the town said the gully had cut them off from their brothers and sisters neighbouring Umudim village in Amichi whom they lived and interacted with for ages.

Ntagu said many people had left the town due to the erosion threat while most people were homeless because their lands had been washed away.

"It was not as big as this in the past, we used to pass through this place to Ochi in Amichi where we used to have our match pass but it has continued to grow.

"This place where I am standing is my 'ala obi' (land inheritance) where I am supposed to build and farm but it has been washed off.

"Those of us who live on the bank of the erosion don't sleep whenever it rains, many families have lost their homes and ran to their family members in other locations," he said.

Also speaking, Mr Onyeka Ikejiaku described the situation as a disaster as it had affected their livelihood, economic activities and social development negatively.

Ikejiaku said they were predominantly farmers, their brothers on other side of the gully cannot evacuate their produce because the roads had been cut off

A number of government officials and agencies have been visiting but nothing has been done, that is why we are calling on the Federal Government and State Government to come to our rescue.

All the flash floods from Igboukwu, Oraeri and other communities flow down to the area and empty into 'babuwa river' which goes to Imo state.

"We have been doing our best as directly affected people and as a community to control this but it is not enough," he said.

Chief Clement Ezeifedikwa, the President General of Ekwulimili who led journalists to the sites said it was contending with four massive gullies and few smaller ones.

Ezeifedikwa who was represented by Mr Stephen Okeke, an elder in the community said urgent intervention was needed to avoid total erosion of the area.

According to him, our people cannot build houses or factories because they have lost their lands. A lot of them have left their ancestral homes and relocated to places where they bought land.

"We are in real danger and we are calling on the international community and government at all levels to come to our rescue," he said.

Nairaland / General / Rojenny Says, Nigeria Capable Of Winning 10 Gold Medals In France Olympics by Prisschi: 3:23pm On Aug 16, 2021
Rojenny Says, Nigeria Capable Of Winning 10 Gold Medals In France Olympics

Rommy Ezeonwuka, proprietor of Rojenny Stadium and Games Village, Oba, near Onitsha, in Anambra, says Nigeria can win as many as 10 gold medals in the 2024 Olympics scheduled to hold in France.

Ezeonwuka said this at an interactive session with journalists at Oba, while reacting to the just concluded Tokyo Olympics where Nigeria won one silver medal and one bronze medal.

Ezeownuka said while most sports enthusiasts were celebrating the feat, as Nigeria’s best after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, he was not satisfied because as the giant of Africa, Nigeria should have done better.

He said as a foremost private investor in sports facilities, he was pained that administrators had neglected his ‘Olympics model’ stadium which was capable of producing world champions, if properly utilised.

He urged sports administrators to exploit the opportunities at Rojenny stadium by using it as a closed camp for the training of athletes for the next Olympics, saying that the outcome would not be less than 10 gold medals.

“I don’t understand why Nigerians are celebrating a silver and a bronze when smaller countries packed a good number of gold home.

“We are more than that, we don’t prepare well, the Olympics is a four-year event, you don’t manufacture world champions overnight.

“The Ministry of Sports and sports federations should come and use Rojenny to train their athletes, that is why I built this place about 38 years ago.

“If you bring 100 athletes here and prepare them in training and diet for France 2024, if at the end of the day, Nigeria does not win 10 gold medals, hold me responsible,” he said.

Ezeonwuka recalled how the youthful Fanny Amun Golden Eaglets, trained at Rojenny stadium for more than two years before going to Japan to win the U-17 world cup.

He said he was willing to go into partnership with government and corporate firms to optimise the use of the facility for the overall interest of Nigerian youths, especially athletes.

“Rojenny is the first and biggest privately owned sports facility in Nigeria today, it is an Olympic stadium because we don’t just have a football pitch here, we have facilities for almost every Olympics sports Nigeria participates in.

“I built it in 1983 because of the vision I have for development of youths in the South East and Nigeria, up till today most state governments don’t have it, but I have operated and maintained it as a private citizen.

” I am willing to work with the Ministry of Sports and Sports Federations to see how we can use this to provide more opportunities for our future generations,” he said

Nairaland / General / Rojenny MD Seeks Partnership To Manage Games Village In Anambra by Prisschi: 3:11pm On Aug 16, 2021
Rojenny Seeks Partnership To Manage Games Village

The proprietor of Rojenny Tourist Games Village, Oba, near Onitsha, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, says he is ready to partner with any local or international investors to manage the facility.

Ezeonwuka spoke during a guided tour of the facility with selected journalists in Anambra on.

He said the facility, located on the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway, is worth more than N500 billion.

The village has an Olympic size stadium, lawn tennis, teqball, table tennis, rugby, swimming pool, field and track events, accommodation, zoo and many other facilities.

Ezeonwuka said he established the facility to ensure that youths ready to achieve their potential in sports got the best training.

“I am the first African to build one of the largest private international stadia in Nigeria that hosted seven continental matches.

“I have nurtured footballers that are making waves overseas from this stadium,” he said.

Ezeonwuka regretted that some Olympic standard sports facilities in the village were under-utilised.

He also said he was greatly pained by the treatment he got during the 2020 Nigerian Police Games hosted in Anambra.

“The police authorities inspected facilities here and approved them for use for the games.

“But midway into the competition, most of the games, including swimming and football, were moved out to other places,” he said.

Also, John Obinwa, Teqball and Rugby-certified coach and Chief Consultant to the outfit, urged government at all levels to step up actions to empower the youths, using sports.

“Government can take advantage of the opportunities in sports to engage the youths and take their minds away from crimes and reckless lifestyles,” he said.

The facility, which sits on a 4,550 square metres, was established in 1982

Nairaland / General / Southeast NMA Task States On Improved Healthcare Sector In Region by Prisschi: 5:01pm On Aug 14, 2021
Southeast NMA Task States On Improved Healthcare Sector In Region

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), South East caucus, says it is worried by the state of the healthcare system and security situation in the region.

The NMA South East Caucus comprising Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo state branches made their position known in a Communiqué issued after its general meeting held Abakaliki on July 25

The Communiqué which was signed by Dr Jide Onyekwelu, and Dr Dubem Awachie, Chairman and Secretary of the South East caucus of NMA respectively was made available to journalists in Awka on Saturday.

The association called on the government of states in the region to be more committed to the improvement of the healthcare system for better service delivery.

The NMA caucus described the condition of health workers in Imo state as 'very poor' adding that the backlog of arrears owed their colleagues in Abia was unpalatable and unacceptable.

It commended Anambra and Enugu state governments for prompt and regular payment of doctors' salary but regretted that the pay fell far short of the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS).

"The Caucus noted with dismay the very poor condition of healthcare
workers in Imo state, they are still being owed several months salary arrears.

"We appreciate the Governor of Imo State for appointing Dr Barth Okorochukwu as the Health Commissioner and hope for a turnaround in the health sector in the state.

"The outrageous salary arrears owed Abia State-employed doctors
remains an unpalatable and unacceptable situation, this has led to
the worsening of healthcare delivery in the state.

"We demand that as a matter of urgency, the Abia Government should pay the accrued arrears of doctors and other healthcare workers, and make urgent efforts to revamp healthcare delivery in the state.

"Anambra State Government has continued to pay salaries regularly, however, it is yet to upgrade doctors' pay adjusted 2019 CONMESS, as is obtainable with their Federal counterparts," it stated.

The Onyekwelu led NMA caucus commeded Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi for his giant strides in the state's health sector and gave Enugu state clean bill of health for regular payment of salaries of healthcare workers,

They said the construction and equipping of a virology center and an accident and emergency complex at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital and other projects stood Ebonyi out in the region.

"These monumental achievements coupled with good road network
and prompt regular payment of salaries of health workers has made
Ebonyi State to stand out in the South East.

"The caucus commend the Ebonyi state governor and encourage him to continue with the positive transformations in healthcare delivery in the state," it stated.

The South East doctors opposed the removal of House Officers and NYSC Doctors from the Scheme of Service and Salary Structure of Medical Doctors

According to them, this action is with utmost bad fate and will seriously jeopardize healthcare delivery in Nigeria and capable of disrupting industrial harmony in the health sector.

"We demand for the immediate withdrawal of the obnoxious circular altering the scheme of service for doctors," it stated.

The NMA said the Federal Government and various state governments of the states in the Southeast should do more to protect the lives of the people of the region.

"We noted with sadness the worsening state of insecurity in the South East and in Nigeria as a whole.

"The increasing spate of killings, banditry, kidnapping and disruption of socioeconomic activities, portend grave danger to the health service delivery of our people.

"The safety of healthcare workers is paramount in ensuring their continued sacrifices and unhindered service delivery," it stated.

The Caucus noted the healthy progress being made with the construction of our National Secretariat in Abuja.

Anambra Erosion: Popular Ekwueme Square May Cave In Soon

A massive gully erosion is threatening to destroy the popular Ekwueme Square used for most official state functions of the Anambra State government in Awka, the Anambra capital.

Other prized state assets in the vicinity are the Federal High Court, State High Court, Federal Secretariat which is still under construction and some private properties.

Though the Nigeria Erosion Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) had carried out remedial work in the vicinity which saved the federal high court from caving in, the danger was not totally averted.

Our reporter who visited the area said the bludgeoning gully erosion is now a few meters away from the rear fence of the Square.

It will be recalled that the facility has recently been converted to sports arena as facilities including a standard swimming pool, Handballcourt, Volleyball and Basketball courts have been built in it.

Concerned residents of Awka have raised alarmed that the whole place was becoming an ecological disaster zone.

Mr John Okoye, a civil servant said he was not aware of the erosion threat to Alex Ekwueme Square but said every effort should be made to save the facility.

Okoye said apart from the man whom the Square was named after, it meant different things to different people due to its multipurpose nature.

According to him, I am aware that there are erosion challenges around that area but I am not aware that Ekwueme Square is in danger, the government must act fast to save it from destruction.

Also speaking, a staff of Anambra judiciary who pleaded anonymity said the threat was not only on the Square but on all the structures in the vicinity.

The staff said though efforts had been made in the past to rescue some structures in the area, there was need for a holistic intervention.

"The erosion has been there, at a time the Federal High Court building was almost collapsing but NEWMAP did something which is why the edifice is still standing.

"What is needed there is total erosion control, not the makeshift remedy and tipping of sand they have been doing, by the time the rains come heavily, the entire area will be no more," he said.

An official of the ministry of said they were aware that there was gully erosion activities in the area but did not know that Ekwueme Square had become seriously threatened.

According to the official, we know that there are erosion issues around the Ekwueme Square, Federal High Court and State High Court area, but I did not know that Ekwueme square is in serious danger now.

"NEWMAP had done some palliative there and at a time we agreed that they will do the entire job that is why the Ministry of Environment pulled out.
"We cannot lose Ekwueme square, that will be devastating to the state," he said

IPMAN Suspends One-Day Strike Eastern Zone Over Police Harassment

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has resumed distribution of products in Eastern Zone comprising Port Harcourt, Calabar, Aba, Enugu and Makurdi after a one-day strike.

Alhaji Sanusi Fari National President of IPMAN had directed members of the association at the depots within the zone to suspend dispatch of products effective Monday to protest alleged intimidation by the Nigerian Police.

Fari said the indefinite strike would subsist until the leadership of IPMAN Port Harcourt depot led by Dr Joseph Obele which was forcefully sacked on July 30 under the protection of Police was restored.

But a Statement made available on Tuesday said the leadership of IPMAN at the depots within the zone should resume normal operations.

The Statement signed by Fari confirmed that the Obele and members of his leadership had been reinstated in office on Monday and that the strike was called off with immediate effect.

"The National Executive Committee of IPMAN wishes to inform you officially that our members have resumed loading and operations in the Eastern Zone of Aba, Calabar, Enugu, Makurdi and Port Harcourt Depots Units.

"The respective Chairmen are directed to start operations immediately," he stated.

The Statement a meeting had been scheduled with the Inspector General of Police over the leadership crisis in the association on Wednesday and that the outcome would be communicated to members.

"In the interest of the public as patriotic Nigerians which we clearly stated in our open letter to Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali on the 12th July, 2021 National Newspapers, we have restrained our members in the face of all provocations from withdrawing their services.

"But, this time around, for no just cause, there was peace, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State brought illegal people who are not even our members and put them in our Port Harcourt Secretariat.

This action provoked general anger on the members who refused to work.

One Elder Okoronkwo has asked our members to go back to work which nobody answered him.

"This has confirmed our position that he has no member supporting him, he remains a pretender to the leadership of IPMAN and my office has communicated same to all concerned government departments and security agencies severally.

"The association therefore states that operations have resumed in the Eastern Zone based on the directives of the IPMAN NEC under my leadership.

" It is our firm belief that the next line of action shall be determined by the outcome of the meeting with Police headquarters tomorrow," Sanusi Fari Stated.
