Nairaland / General / Insecurity, Oil Bunkering, Militancy And Anambra Oil Economy by Prisschi: 4:11pm On Sep 13
Insecurity, Oil Bunkering, Militancy And Anambra Oil Economy

In 2022, Anambra state was recognised as an oil bearing state in Nigeria and got enlisted as the 11th member of Niger Delta Development Commission or 13 per cent derivation beneficial state.

This followed years of administrative process which involved Environmental Impact Assessment Approval and feasibility to ensure that the mineral deposit in the state was commercially viable.

Effort for effective exploration of oil and gas in Ogbaru dated back to 2010 when China Petroleum & Chemical Company (SINOPEC) crossed the River Niger into Ogwu-Aniocha from Okpai in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State, South-south Nigeria for oil exploration.

SINOPEC discovered some oil wells but could not continue for unknown reasons and left in 2011.

In 2013, Sterling Oil Engineering and Exploration Production Company (SEEPCO) moved in and has maintained a significant presence since 2019.

Their operations later become a window of economic prosperity for Anambra as it earned it the status of an oil producing state and making it a beneficiary of 13 per cent derivation in 2022.

Sadly, growing insecurity in the Ogbaru area has become a threat to the operation of SEEPCO.

The challenges range from sprawling militancy, oil bunkering, communal crisis and illegal refining of crude.

This, according to the company, had resulted in a drastic decrease in the volume of production.

Speaking to newsmen in Awka recently, Mr Austin Brown, General Manager of Community Relations and Security of SEEPCO said the problems they were facing included oil theft, insecurity and Community related issues between Ogwu-Ikpele Communities.

According to him, between last year, 2023 to August this year, SEEPCO has recorded over 25 tapping on its pipeline and uncovered nine illegal oil refineries between Akili Ogidi and Obagwe.

“This hostile development is undermining the economic growth of SEEPCO, Anambra State and Nigeria at large.

“Again, insecurity has become the other of the day in Ogwu-Ikpele and Ogwu-Aniocha Communities, this is currently affecting the smooth operations of the company in the area,” he said.

On the recent attacks in the area, the official said SEEPCO workers under military escort were attacked and three Soldiers were killed, one wounded and four rifles carted away.

He said the attack took place on June 11, 2024 led to the abduction of nine workers and murder of one of the workers by the gunmen.

Brown said Community related issues have also been affecting the operations of SEEPCO in Anambra.

He said “ on Aug. 1 and Aug. 2 this year, some youths from Ogwu-Ikpele Community besieged our facilities and damaged the windscreen of about 12 vehicles and vandalised our offices because they wanted the removal of the Community liaison officer of the Community.

“Our operations were shut down over unnecessary issues at various times. These are major problems SEEPCO in host communities in Anambra,” he said.

Stakeholders say declining production will have negative effect on the revenue from Petroleum accruable to Anambra

They called on the Anambra government to endeavour to evolve a secure and conducive environment for the companies exploring in the area.

They called for effective collaboration between SEEPCO and the government in the quest for safe operation and optimal production in the state.

He said “the major purpose of this event is to Inaugurate this group which is very localised, our objective is to ensure that Mr Governor wins his second term election.

Nwegwu said Soludo had favoured Dunukofia by way of road construction, appointment of indigenes in his cabinet, recruitment into state civil service and youth empowerment.

He said Dunukofia was setting the pace by being the first to set up a support group that was organic and local, formed out of genuine love for the governor by the people.

‘We understand that politics is local and this is the only way we can return the governor for second term, we all shall be at our polling units on the election day

According to him, Nawgu community got the first tarred road for the first time under Soludo, Dunukofia has been lucky under this government with a good number of appointees in charge of

Chief Ifeatu Obiokoye, Chairman of the All Digressive Grand Alliance said the party would encourage all the support groups because it would not be able to do it alone.

Insecurity, Bunkering, Hampering Petroleum Production In Anambra…SEEPCO

The Sterling Oil Exploration and Engineering Petroleum Company (SEEPCO) , an oil exploration company based in Anambra, has lamented the negative effects of insecurity on its activities.

The company disclosed this when it appeared before the Anambra House of Assembly this week .

Mr Austin Brown, General Manager, Community Relations and Security of SEEPCO who represented the company said the insecurity and environmental challenges in Ogbaru Area had caused a significant decline in its production volumes.

Brown said oil theft, illegal refining and increasing militancy by gunmen had resulted in abduction, loss of lives of some members of staff of the company and reduced output.

He said about 11 illegal refineries had been discovered in Ogbaru with over 25 broken points along the pipelines where oil thieves stole crude oil.

He recounted that on June 11, gunmen attacked their workers, killed three soldiers and abducted nine members of staff who were later rescued in Ihiala.

On their role on insecurity and environmental degradation in Ogbaru, Brown said the company carried out Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) and was executing some projects under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

According to him, we constituted the Host Community Development Trust where three percent of our annual budget is being paid, we renovated a primary healthcare centre and we are constructing some roads.

On his part, Mr Chidi Ibeneme, Chairman House Committee on Petroleum said SEEPCO was not complying with provisions of local content act as members of the host communities working in the company were largely casual workers

Ibeneme called on the company to invest more on education and healthcare of the people of the area.

He said the Assembly would ensure that welfare, revenue and development benefits accruing to the state and host communities were guaranteed under their oil exploration activities.

Dr Somto Udeze, Speaker of the Assembly who read the resolution of the House said the invitation was sequel to the huge number of petitions against the impact of the operations of the oil companies by the host communities.

Udeze, who hailed from one of the host communities, said SEEPCO should provide documentary Evidence of the constitution of the host communities trust, EIA, CSR and other claims at their next appearance.

“Provide evidence showing that three percent of your annual budget has been paid for 2022, 2023, 2024 and projects executed so far as CSR as well as document showing needs assessment of Host Communities.

“Comprehensive document showing the EIA, natural gas flare elimination and monetisation plan with respect to Section 108 of PIA and your plans for decommissioning and abandonment after work.

“Evidence of out-put metering regarding the quantity of oil and gas produced daily, list of Anambra indigenes who are staff of the company and evidence of payment of tax to the state from inception till date,” he said .

Politics / Activist Exposes Silent Infrastructure Revolution Under Gov. Soludo. by Prisschi: 4:32pm On Sep 01
Activist Exposes Silent Infrastructure Revolution Under Gov. Soludo.

Some residents of Anambra have commended Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for the infrastructure revolution going on under his administration.

The residents expressed their admiration when an Activist, Mr Osita Obi took some journalists on a tour of some completed and ongoing projects in the state on Friday.

The projects visited were the completed Amansea-Ndiukwuenu-Awa-Ufuma road measuring about 23km and Anansea-Ebenebe-Ugbenu-Awba Ofemili road measuring about 26km, the Government House/Lodge, Ifite road link bridge, Ekwueme Square and Solution Fun City.

The Amansea-Ndiukwuenu-Awa-Ufuma road has now reduced travel time between Awka and Umunze through Nibo-Awgbu-Amaokpala-Oko from 2h:30 hrs to about 35 mins while the communities on the route are opening up to development.

Some residents of Awba-Ofemili in Awka North Local Government Area, the termination point of the Anansea-Ebenebe-Ugbenu-Awba Ofemili road described Soludo as Godsend.

The people of the agrarian community said life was terrible before the road was constructed.

Mr Ambrose Nweke
said the community was far away from modern civilisation as the road leading to it was impossible.

According to him, we will vote Sudo 10 times if he stands for election 10 times, this road has brought life and light to us.

Also speaking, Chinedu Orekie, a community leader said the access road was not done because of their effort as a people but for the benevolence of Prof Soludo.

According to Orekie, a lot has happened in this community since this road was completed, development has come in, our land has appreciated tremendously and people are coming in.

“I am 47 years old now, this is the first time I am seeing a tarred road in Awba Ofemili, We thank the governor for this, he has promised to link this road to other communities around us,” he said.

The team also visited the ongoing Ifite road flyover across the Awka-Enugu expressway.

The project will connect the traffic from Nibo, Amawbia, Eke Awka, and Agu through Zik Avenue to Ifite and divert unnecessary traffick from the popular Aromma Junction.

The massive Anambra Government House/Lodge which has been abandoned for over 20 years is another wonder in waiting.

The project, sitting on 23 hectres of land, promises to be one of the biggest and best government houses in Nigeria.

It houses an executive council chambers, presidential lodge for diplomatic guests, banquets hall, a chaplaincy, governor's lodge, green area with over 3.2 km of internal roads and well paved flood channels.

It is worthy to note that the site of the Government House/Lodge is part of a reclaimed gully erosion site because it sits at the lowest point in Awka with high susceptibility to flood and erosion.

When completed, Soludo would have succeeded in giving Anambra a befitting and permanent governance edifice that will not only her proud but enhance efficient service delivery in the public sector

The Alex Ekwueme Square, the outdoor state event centre is not spared of the infrastructure transformation going on under Soludo.

The arena is undergoing massive remodeling with conversion of one of the pavilion to a state-of-the-art state box, refurbishing of another as well as the construction of a new one.

According to an engineer on site, the project is nearing completion and would soon be handed over to the people of Anambra.

The Solution Fun City within the premises of Old Awka Township Stadium which will have a Water Park and other leisure facilities will be the most preferred tourism destination when completed.

Speaking to journalists, Osita Obi, a good governance advocate said he initiated the project tour to confirm some of the claims himself and communicate his findings to the masses.

Obi said he was overwhelmed with what he saw, and pleaded with people of Anambra to give Gov. Soludo more time to drive his ‘vision of radical transformation’.

We must not disrupt this progress, Anambra is on the part to sustainable, development,

Politics / Anambra 2025: Hunger,  Hardship Now Political Weapons In Nigeria? by Prisschi: 12:13pm On Aug 23
Anambra 2025: Hunger,  Hardship Now Political Weapons In Nigeria?

By Rev Dr Dan Ejianya

Every sane mind following what has been playing out in this our modern political society must have wondered if there's any benefit that comes from having poor and hungry people within the polity.

My rhetorical question here is: are there really people who are benefitting from a poverty stricken society? Can poverty actually get contained in a society such as ours? My worry is that even the poor no longer understand the situation.

It has become an undisputed fact that poverty is now a weapon of control used by some persons in government to perpetually hold the loyalty of the masses as a bond!

This assertion could be justified by the way our political leaders boldly share cups of rice packaged like biscuits, sachets of noodles and even N500 to voters at the ballot, just to win elections.

It must have shocked one to observe that some people go to the polling centres purposely to scramble for these items.

We end up returning the mediocres who loot our treasury while in power, only for us to go back to the church to pray for salvation.

"Nigeria in distress!" Yet, we are the reason Nigeria is in distress. I recently heard a sitting governor compelling the church to continue to pray for the government.

After collecting their thanksgiving and offering, the church would compose a prayer that make things happen and share to the congregations, and even at that, preach to them to regard all earthly things as mundane and "vanity upon vanity - all is vanity" while the leaders return to their milking creek called the government house.

Hunger seems to have become an intractable social phenomenon that has perpetually come to stay in Nigeria. The more we cry, the worse it rears its ugly head and gets compounded.

This is simply because we have ignorantly continued to sacrifice our social values and entitlements on the alter of immediate political gains, thereby continually mortgaging our collective destinies.

Until our children begin to accuse us of being cause of their woes, Nigerians would never learn their lesson.

HE. Mr Peter Obi would always say, " the society we abuse today will take revenge on our children in future". Many have never pondered on the meaning of this quote.

What we do today is just like a parent who after retirement, collected all his retirement entitlements and squandered all on "stomach infrastructure" leaving their children wandering in total despair.

Most of our political leaders are not just corrupt, they are also irresponsible, heartless, and have no feeling for Nigeria and Nigerians.

Who is that responsible father and head of a house where there is no money for the children's school fees, hospital bills and even food, who will - in spite of the situation - go to the bank to borrow, NOT for investment, NOT for any of the problems of the household, but for his personal pleasure - cars?

Where on earth is such a father found? But that is the quality of persons that are managing the affairs of Nigeria today!

Yes, Hunger is a weapon and they are effectively using it. According to Maslow, if a man's deprivation reaches up to the lack of the three Basic Needs of food, clothing and shelter, the person ceases to be a normal human.

All his attention is directed only towards satisfying those basic needs and nothing more. Such a person could do anything to satisfy immediate needs. He could even sell his voter card for a plate of food! And our politicians know this very well.

This is where they have successfully reduced the very weak and vulnerable Nigerians to.

As we are battling for hunger and hardship artificially imposed on us by these unscrupulous rulers, they are busy battling for the next election.

Yet, some of their brainwashed and uniformed foot soldiers would still dash off their pit of hunger to sing their praises. The day of reckoning is indeed near.

Governance is far different from administration. Some persons are destined with the gift of administration, while some are gifted with leadership skills and capacity.

But everyone is rushing for a shot at governance. No one can offer what he does not have.

A governor ought to be someone who must have managed human resources both in the private and public sector.

His experience in the private sector would help draw his attention clearly to the possible conditions of people outside the corridors of government.

This is necessary because it has been observed that some political leaders seem not to understand that there are people who earn less than one dollar per day.

The seat of government ought to be occupied by someone who has printable investments to prove his capacity to invest the state's resources properly.

Everyone today talk about Peter Obi because even little children can today read his history as an investor. That is the same reason we ought to consider people who are in the same political vehicle with him.

Though not all that glitters are gold, our sense of judgement must not be drawn from the line of deceit and needless bias.

Every other candidate for the Anambra gubernatorial election, including the incumbent may demand support, but may not have it since we in Anambra are as we are: we don't need a society where property would matter more than people's life.

The man UGO IGBO is another personality who can lift Anambra to enviable heights again.
Chief Engr. Bart Nwibe (Ugo Igbo) is truly an exemplary product of liberalism.

His records of achievement is built on his chronicles of investment.

Anambrarians are business centered, we need a governor that has investment foresight. We need a governor that would convert our empty bushes into a business hub.

We need a governor that would connect ideas to practicality. Chief Engr Bart Nwibe is indeed a man to reckon with. Ndi-Anambra are special people, we therefore need a special leader. So, we move with Ugo Igbo.

Rev Dr Dan Ejianya from Nnewi

The stakeholders made the call at a summit entitled “Combating, Preventing Violent Crime and Menace of Cultism in Awka Metropolitan City” held in Awka on Wednesday.

Nweke, a private security experts called for a more robust relationship between security agencies and the community for a more effective outcome in tackling the insecurity in the capital town.

He advised that families of victims of cult killings should stop burying them in a hurry so that police could do a post mortem and prosecute cases.

“The unemployment in Awka is worse now than it was before, poverty is responsible for the crime taking place today.

“Our farmlands are being used to build public infrastructure and we are losing our livelihood, successive governments did not have any programme to compensate these people for their losses,” he said.

In his lecture, CP Itam Nnaghe of Anambra commended Awka Community for their bold step towards finding solution to the insecurity.

Former Anambra Guber Aspirant Urges Government To Address Hardship On Birthday

Chief Rommy Okoli, a former governorship aspirant in Anambra has called on politicians and governments at all levels to be responsible and responsive to the needs of the masses when making their policies.

The Elder Statesman made the call at a news briefing in Awka as part of the activities to mark his birthday.

The Messenger as he is fondly called said the level of hunger and poverty among the people was worrisome, noting that it demanded an urgent and deliberate policy measure to address them.

He appealed to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to make the country's refineries functional to address the problem of petroleum supply and price induced inflation.

He said Nigeria was richly endowed that no citizen should be in poverty if they were properly harnessed and prudently managed.

Okoli also expressed concert with the security situation across the country and urged the security agencies to rise to the occasion.

"The high price of fuel is making it difficult for free movement of persons, goods and services and people cannot do their business effectively, farmers cannot go to farm for fear of being abducted, these are twin factors the government should work on immediately.

"The arms of government at various levels should collaborate to make Nigeria work, it is not enough for them to be living in affluence and opulence while the majority of the populace are wallowing in poverty and squalor," he said.

Okoli, a former executive chairman of Nnewi South LGA said the Supreme Court judgment which granted financial autonomy to councils was a welcome development.

He pointed out that the financial autonomy will empower the Local Government Areas to be effective.

"We all know that local government areas are the closest to the people, with the financial autonomy, councils will become more proactive and capable of taking care of the immediate needs of their people.

"I am calling for peace in Nigeria, we need peaceful co-existence of all the ethnic nationalities in Nigeria which would engender and quicken development," he said.

before the autonomous status, Fr Chinazo is the first downhill, that is, Akama n’Ubaha and Urualla.

His priestly ordination is coming at a time when all the bond that held the communal and social fabric of Eziawa together seem to have broken and the community looking like the proverbial carcass of her old serene, tranquil and peaceful self.

Fr Chinazo, like his name connotes, (God Saves), looks like a rallying point for the disoriented people of Eziawa, a people struggling with identity and leadership crisis as a result of disillusionment occasioned by absence of known traditional and then union structure..

No wonder, for the first time in a very long time, men, women, youths and children who were at the Cathedral sang and danced in joyful jubilation when Fr Nazo was led from the Bishop House by Fr. Raymond Ihenetu, the Parish Priest of St Anthony's Catholic Church Eziawa to the reception organised for him by members of his community.

Furthermore, Fr Chinazo was ordained at a time when the eyes of many were wet with tears and hearts heavy over the tragic loss of loved ones through gruesome murder with the state keeping a straight face as though nothing happened.

The ceremony was not just significant but momentous as it provided the disoriented people of Eziawa an opportunity to celebrate something that was excellent, ennobling and objectively sane.

Fr Ihenetu in his short remark congratulated the people of Eziawa prayed that the ordination of Fr Chinazo would be the beginning of recovery for the town.

The proud but forlorn Priest said he wished and prayed that God would use the ordination of Fr cleanse the land of Eziawa and grant her peace, security and restitution.

According to Fr Ray, “today is the end of the years if training and the beginning of another journey.

"We do not know how many of them that started this journey but we are happy that our brother is one of the succeful few who were ordained today.

“So, I pray that through this ordination, God will bring peace to Eziawa, that God will bring security, bringovd to Eziawa and heal the land,” he said.

On his part, Fr Chinazo thanked God for being with him all through the journey as well as those who were instrumental to ceremony.

He prayed that God will bless his fatherland and grant the souls of the dead, eternal rest.

In a special way, the new priest Commiserated with families that have list their lives ones in the way of recent killings including the chairman of the local organising committee of the ordination ceremony.

Rev. Fr Chinazo Ogoh celebrated his first Mass and had his ordination thanksgiving at St Anthony's Catholic Church Eziawa on Sunday Aug 18. 2024.

ARD-NAUTH Protest Against Continued Detention Of ‘Ganiyat’ Seven Months After Kidnap

Members of the Association of Resident Doctors(NARD), Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Centre appealed for an urgent and unconditional release of their colleague, Dr Ganiyat Popoola.

The doctors held solidarity walk around the Akammiri permanent site of the teaching hospital in Nnewi with visits to some wards and ended it with a prayer session at the main gate.

They bore placards with varying inscriptions including ‘’Free Ganiyat From Kidnappers', ‘Save Ganiyat’, ’Help Save Ganiyat' among others.

Dr Chiemezie Agbanu, President ARD-NAUTH who spoke to journalists said the solidarity walk was to join voices with the rest of Nigerians especially doctors to call for the freedom of Ganiyat from kidnappers den after over seven months.

Agbanu who was represented by Dr Adeyemo Adebiyi, chairman ARD-NAUTH Strategy and Mobilisation Committee said urgent steps should be taken to stop the spate of kidnap of doctors.

This solidarity walk is to call for unconditional release of one of our colleagues, Dr Ganiyat who was kidnapped at the National Health Centre Kaduna and still held in captivity about seven months and 20 days ago.

“It looks like doctors are now an endangered species, they are people who care for the environment and community.

“Once doctors are living in this type of danger, it means the health sector will collapse and brain drain will increase,” he said.

Also speaking, Dr Onyinye Ifezue, 1st Vice President ARD-NAUTH said they were worried about the mental, psychological and physical health of the woman who had been in the captivity of unknown gunmen.

Ifezue said Ganiyat's case was worse because she was a woman with numerous vulnerabilities and pleaded with the authorities and captors alike to free the doctor.

“We are worried because we are doctors and the victim is a woman. Only God knows what she must have been passing through in the hands of those kidnappers for almost eight months.

“We know that if she was a politician, more would have been some to rescue her, she has been exposed to physical violation, mental and psychological torture as a result of being sroersted from her family,” she said.

On his part, Dr Nnaemeka Sibeudu, 2nd Vice President ARD-NAUTH said doctors were condemning kidnapping of any Nigerian irrespective of their trade as it was a violation of their freedom to movement.

Sibeudu commended all those involved in the process of securing Ganiyat's release for the efforts they had made and wondered why the victim was still being held by her captors.

“We want to call on the Federal Government, the National Assembly, the security agencies and governors to ensure Ganiyat is release immediately and unconditionally,’’ he said.

Catholic Medical Practitioners Seek Immediate Release Of 20 Medical Students

The Association of Catholic Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (ACMPN) has called for intensified effort towards securing the freedom of 20 medical students who were kidnapped on Otukpo-Enugu road on their way to the annual conference of the Catholic Medical students' Association in Enugu on Aug. 16.

The Catholic medical professionals in the Statement signed by Prof. Hadiza Agbo, the president condemned the kidnap of the students as an atrocious act and a dangerous signal for the nation's health sector.

Excerpts of the Communique:

Association of Catholic Medical Practitioners
(ACMPN) at the end of an
emergency Board of Trustees (BO) and National Executive Meeting (NEC), unanimously
expresses its deep resentment and outcry over the kidnap of twenty Catholic medical students and a doctor, who were abducted while traveling to attend the annual conference of the Catholic Medical Students Association in Enugu.

This atrocious act, will not only affect the mental health of these students but will have a negative impact on the health as these young
ones will neither desire to study nor work as medical doctors in Nigeria (thus a further cause
for the push-factor "japa syndrome" out of the country).

This abduction, has the ability to reverse all the efforts made at keeping medical professionals to work in Nigeria.

Tragically. these students were forcefully abducted from the commercial vehicle on a major road along Otukpo-Enugu road on Friday 16th August, 2024 and are still been held captives leading to an unimaginable toll on the physical and mental health of their immediate family,
colleagues, friends, teachers and the school authority.

The ACMPN commends the efforts of the Benue State Police but calls on the Nigerian government and all the other appropriate authorities to take immediate, urgent, proactive and decisive action to secure the release of these students.

The Nigerian government should make the safety of medical students and doctors is its top priority if holistic health and well-being of its citizens is to be achieved.

The ugly incident has the ability of demoralising their
colleagues, on-coming students, parents; and collectively will have an untoward effect on
literacy rate and worsening health indices which will jeopardise all efforts geared at improving health.

What then will a country boost of when it's younger and promising generations are studying in utmost uncertainty and amidst top notch insecurity.

The Association empathize with their parents, friends, colleagues, we understand the pains in your heart, the nightmares and sleepless nights, and we assure you that you are not alone in this, we empathise with you all.

We urge every concerned Nigerian to join us to pray for the safe release of these students and doctor.

We appeal to governments at all levels to ensure a safe and conducive atmosphere for learning.

Regina Caeli Hospital Committed to Quality Healthcare Despite Challenges…Fr Affusim

Rev. Fr Innocent Affusim, Manager, Regina Caeli Hospital Awka says the establishment is committed to delivering top notch quality healthcare services to the public despite the increasing cost of operation.

Afusim said this in an interview with newsmen in Awka while reacting to the newly introduced utility bill fee for health insurance policy holders at the hospital on Sunday.

Some members of the public under health insurance at the hospital had expressed outrage over the introduction of N1,000 utility bill fee for every patient.

Affusion lamented cessation of foreign aids to the mission hospital making the establishment to rely solely on internally generated revenue.

He said that healthcare services were becoming increasingly expensive and that additional measures had to be taken in order to prevent the hospital system from total collapse.

He said charge for utility bills was an internal policy of the hospital for health insurance policy holders who did not pay for registration and consultation adding that it could not be factored into their bills for clarity purposes.

He said in spite the challenges, the Regina Caeli remained the biggest privately owned hospital in Awka and environs and that the church was non compromising on standards and high quality healthcare services.

The priest commended the church and philanthropist who had been supporting the hospital assuring that the target was to make Regina Caeli a frontline multi specialist private hospital in Nigeria.

“Initially, the church was aided externally by some donor agencies but those foreign donors have all pulled out, whatever we are doing here is through internally generated revenues, though once in a while a philanthropist can intervene.

"This is one of the cheapest privately owned hospitals in Awka because, as it is a mission hospital, we try as much as possible to render the best meduack services at the lowest rate possible but we are not running a charity organisation.

"As for the utility bill we charge, it is a normal thing in the hospital environment which is factored in the bill payable by the public in various ways, some call it consultation fee others call it registration fee..

"Ours is different because those under insurance do not pay consultation fees, but they enjoy all the quality and standard services we provide, so for us here, the utility bill is to cover the cost of facilities and services we render, " he said.

Afusim said health insurance was a great intervention in the nations' health delivery system as it afforded a greater number of the public to access healthcare at an affordable rate.

He however called for a review of the coverage scope of the scheme to accommodate the prevailing inflation and market prices of approved drugs to enable policy holders enjoy wider services under the scheme.

"I think it has become necessary for review of health insurance coverage, most of what it allowed years ago had been taken out by inflation, I do not know how they will do it but I think policy holders need wider cover,* he said.

*We gave some of the best diagnostic equipment, an automated filing and queuing system, we have decentralised operations to reduce patent movement and tried to make the place as conducive as possible for workers and patients," he said.

Ezeonwuka Says Soludo's Palm Revolution Will Transform Economy Of Households

Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, Founder of Ogilisi Foundation, an Igbo Socio-Cultural organisation has commended Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for reintroducing the palm and coconut agro revolution.

Ezeonwuka who spoke to newsmen in Awka said the two cash crops had the capacity of transforming the economic fortunes of families in there years if properly implemented.

He said palm oil sold higher in the international market and had the capability of sustaining the livelihood of families in the long term.

“I want to appreciate Gov. Soludo for distribution of millions of palm seedlings to Anambra families, this is a pleasant return to the Micheal Okpara era which sustained the former Eastern region at that time.

“It may interest us to know that a palm tree yields 40 kg of palm oil per annum, not considering other derivatives and 20 trees will be about 800kg which when sold at three dollars and eight cents amounts to over N1.2 million per family in a year,” he said.

Ezeonwuka called on Non Governmental Organisation and wealthy citizens of the state to support the effort of the governor by donating high yielding palm seedlings to members of the public and ensuring every household had at least 10 palm trees in their compound.

He said Anambra could earn more from palm oil than oil and gas if the initiative was proper harnessed.

He said while it was important for people to engage in farming practices that could sustain them in the interim, there was a need for strategic measures to guarantee their economic security in the long run.

How Anambra Journalist Survived Armed Men Attack,

Story of Izunna Okafor

Yes, it was exactly one week yesterday, on August 4th, 2024.

My friends and I had finished a gathering we had somewhere in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, which though didn't start early enough on Saturday, August 3. We broke the day there, as the gathering officially ended at about 2.am.

Awka had been revered as a ‘happening city’ where activities, especially nightlife, remain never go off, till almost the following night.

Being an Awka-based practicing journalist, I had also attended many other functions, meetings, and media-related assignments in the past, especially during emergencies and political periods, from where I safely returned home late in the night, even at such odd hours as 2.am, 3.am and so on, without anybody or group interfering with my movement.

These, and other heap of confidence so far built over more than ten years of my stay and practice of journalism in the city made me have less anxiety over my safe return to my residence that fateful Sunday night after our dismissal. Although I hear of and also write many news of the various crimes and security happenings in Awka on a daily basis, I never knew that the city had currently grown to be in its most unsecured status in the history of human existence.

So, as usual, after our gathering, I saddled on my somewhat new ride and mounted the road, after my friends and colleagues had taken their own direction. I was the only one among us going to my side.

And, as is usually the case, some streets were still on, especially the ever-busy Abakaliki Street (Club Road), as at that 2:09 am when I took off and was cruising to my residence.

It, however, became unusual, as I bent towards the direction of my destination, Off the Abakaliki Street before the Queen Suit Hotel, as a yellow-coloured tricycle (Keke) double-crossed me, with three ferocious and cantankerous men onboard.

That area is known for its quietness, darkness, and loneliness, especially in the night, and early hours of the day when the shop owners in the area are closed or yet to open for the day.

“Come down from the bike,” one of the boys said, brandishing a gun in his hand.

As I was trying to resist, question, and understand what was happening, the other one among the two persons who alighted from the tricycle drew closer and leveraged the tool of hot slap to order me not to waste their time.

As the slap was still echoing some bee sounds in my ear, the third person who remained inside the tricycle joined his voice to warn me not to delay them further; even as few cars that approached the area at that moment all reversed upon seeing the tricycle standing at the center of the road, with armed men standing by.

With courage and instigation that came from nowhere, as this was going on, I immediately geared up my motorcycle in a bid to flee, while one of them immediately cocked his gun, and the other pushed me down on motion, together with the motorcycle. And we crashed.

As I was struggling to get up, one of them grabbed up the motorcycle, saddled on it, and zoomed off in the company of the Keke, in which the other two had already mounted; and they sped off.

Immediately after the scene cleared, some people rushed to assist me, as they comforted me and stopped a tricycle for me, which I boarded in the company of some people, and was ridden home, after I declined to go to the hospital that night.

As I got home, and even while still inside the Keke, I started making calls, beginning with informing the friends I had just finished staying with before the incident, and then calling the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam; the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, and some other security personnel I could reach on phone then, notifying them of what happened. I also requested their assistance in facilitating the apprehension of the hoodlums and recovering my stolen motorcycle — a ride that had been of great help to me in meeting up with my various journalistic engagements, both timeously and economically.

It was not until later in the morning that I clearly saw and began to feel the real pains of the injuries I sustained from the incident the time hoodlums pushed me down when I took the highly regretted dangerous risk to escape.

While I could not comfortably sleep that night, the following morning, as early as 6:30 am, I was already dressed up for church. But the pains couldn't allow me. So, I had to begin finding transportation means to a hospital for urgent medical attention.

However, on second thought, I decided to trek down the axis where I had been attacked the previous night, though still making some phone calls and raising alarms.

Moments later, I was already at the Abakaliki Street. Lo and behold, a motorcycle that looked exactly like mine was dumped along the roadside.

“Could this not be my bike? Or, are these criminals relaxing and drinking somewhere around here in celebration of their successful ‘outing’ last night?” I reasoned aloud.

As I drew much closer, with some premeditated phone numbers in mind to call immediately if something strange was encountered, or if the men were drinking there; lo and behold, it was my motorcycle; abandoned, without anyone in sight as the parker.

What could have happened that led to the motorcycle being abandoned there?

The carburetor of my motorcycle had developed a fault a few weeks ago, such that it usually overfloats most times when I park it, especially when there is enough fuel in it. This made me start locking up the fuel tap each time I park the bike and unlock it when I'm about to go.

Now, this mechanical fault has believably become my saving grace this time; little wonder why I had been reluctant to go fix it since about two weeks ago it started.

Now, before taking off from the venue of our gathering that night, I forgot to unlock the fuel tap as I usually do; and so, the only fuel inside the carburetor was what sustained my ride to the point where the hoodlums robbed me. Unknown to me and them, the carburetor fuel was almost finished, even though there was enough fuel in the fuel tank.

So, men and brethren, it was this remaining fuel in the carburetor that eventually finished up along the road when the criminals were fleeing with the bike, and then, the motorcycle locked up without any sign. Because they obviously could not begin to look for the fault (being a stolen bike), for the fear of being apprehended in the process; they disappointedly dumped and abandoned it there along the road, which was where I saw it the following morning, to the glory of God. This occurred just a few treks away from where the robbery occurred, implying that they didn't even go far with the motorcycle before it locked up — a miracle I believe they might suspect to be a security lock, as it usually happens without giving signs.

Because I couldn't find the key on the motorcycle, I rolled it to a place and parked it there; then went back home, brought the spare key, and started it, after having switched on the fuel tap and given enough time for the carburetor to absorb fuel. Men and brethren, that was how I miraculously recovered and regained the ownership of my lost motorcycle, all to the glory of God.

With that accomplished, the next concern was seeking urgent medical attention, because the various degrees of injuries I sustained on different parts of my body were still very acerbic, which include part of my cheek, part of my eyes, and limbs. Consequently, therefore, I mounted my motorcycle and hurried off to the hospital to take care of myself. And since then, I have been on medication till date, with many significant differences showing already on my body.

Many of the people I have encountered since the day of this incident have shown concern, empathy, and sympathy, but not without asking me what happened to me, especially given the degrees of injuries and scars on my body.

However, because of the blame I perceived would trail me when I should tell the people the real story, especially that aspect of the daring and highly regretted risk that I took by staking my life to drag a motorcycle with armed hoodlums; and because of my reluctance to be recounting the same long story to different people over and over; I decided to be telling them that it was just an accident that I had, whenever anyone asks me what happened after seeing the injuries all over my body. In fact, I even started this the very night the incident happened.

So, as it stands today, many people, including some of my biological relatives, still hold the belief that it was just an accident that I had, as I told them, without knowing yet the real thing that happened to me. Although it's also an accident, to some extent; only a few persons I told know the true story. Meanwhile, some are not even aware that anything happened to me at all.

Howbeit, now that I have almost fully recovered; with appreciation to God, and with sincere apologies to those I somewhat lied to about that; I have finally made up my mind to tell the world the true story of what actually happened to me.

So, men and brethren, this is my story!

Join me to thank God, especially for sparing my life this time again, as many have died through this kind of incident and still lost the dragged item.

It is indeed a testimony and a great lesson to me.

The Lord's name be praised.

Nairaland / General / Regina Caeli Hospital, Awka Where Patients Pay UTILITY BILL Before Seeing Docto by Prisschi: 5:44pm On Aug 05
Regina Caeli Hospital, Awka Where Patients Pay UTILITY BILL Before Seeing Doctor

Regina Caeli hospital, a missionary hospital established by the Catholic church has provided medical services to the public in and around Awka for decades.

It is undoubtedly, the favourite of most families, this may include the fact that they have equally quality services and that the people feel comfortable with them. It is owned and managed by priests under the supervision of Most Revd Dr Paulinus Ezeokafor, the amiable Bishop Catholic Diocese of Awka.

The management of the hospital possibly in a bid to maximise return on investment seem to have lost touch with the vision of the founders of the hospital which in line with the hippocratic oath of doctors is to worship God through service to humanity.

It is sad that health insurance holders at hospital cannot get as little as malaria medicine of less N2,000 from the hospital pharmacy because according to them, the scheme does not cover it, the just have to go to neighborhood shop to buy same.

Today, they compel patients whether in-patient or out-patient to pay UTILITY BILL of N1,000 per head before they can access medical service.

Upon enquiry, the nurse who could not explain the charge to the patient said, that was the new normal at the hospital according to management.

When asked if it was a one-off payment, the source said no, that a patient whether on health insurance or not would pay the utility bill for as many times as they came for healthcare service.

The masses are not that the hospital should not collect money for services rendered as it is not a charity organisation but the worry is that payment of utility is not the responsibility of the patient

Utility be it water or electricity is part of the cost of services just like the expertise of the doctor or labour of the cleaner, so, why should it be a condition for accessing services instead of being part of the bill

It has become necessary that Bishop Ezeokafor takes special interest in the capitalist and exploitative antics of the managers of the hospital which has etched it's name in the hearts of the people moreso, when it is a collective project of the faithful.

The hospital should not be made to take undue advantage of the people or begin to see itself as a
devil's alternative to fully privately owned individuals' hospitals or government owned but laissez faire general hospitals.

Institutes Of Architects Says Omission From ACTDA Building Team Erroneous

The Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) has described the omission of architects in the ACTDA team for maintenance of building regulation standards in the capital territory.

Dr Ikenna Onuorah, chairman of NIA Anambra Chapter said this on Monday said architects remained critical in the building industry who should be part of any team that was conscious of beauty and safety.

Recall that ACTDA had last week set up a team for maintenance of building regulation standards as part of measures to forestall building collapse in the capital territory.

Onuorah said the omission of NIA members who were lead consultants in the building process was a procedural error which should be corrected without much delay.

He commended ACTDA for its proactive step towards ensuring an organised building approval, construction and control is laudable as it conformed with standard form of building contract and National Building Code.

Onuorah said the duties of the architects ranged from pre-contract, contract, and post contract stages of building production.

He said architects conceive building projects as prime consultants and were the last to leave after practical completion.

“He visualises all aspects of the project ranging from spatial, material, finishes, strength, estimated cost and also initiates the engagement of other professionals after the signing and acceptance of his presentation drawings by the client.

“The architect leads the consultancy team in the supervision of the contractor coordinating their inputs to his design with an eye on quality and project cost while avoiding clashes.

“He issues a certificate of practical completion to the contractor and coordinates the post occupancy evaluation of the building after it must have passed the defects and liability period of 6 months across all seasons,” he said.

Onuorah said there was need to strict adherence to principles of division of labour in the building industry in order to achieve optimal result

Chukwebuka Obaelue, the Coordinator of Ikemba Front Atani Ward 2 Coordinator, said they were pleased to have the privilege of hosting the Ubah and the national leadership of political group.

Obaelue said APC had become the only option for Anambra people and that they were embracing the party to align with its members whom he said had contributed to the development of Ogbaru LGA.

He said the Chief Arinzechukwu Awogu, the National Coordinator of Ikemba Front who hailed from Ogbaru had by his activities compelled everyone to begin to adjust towards APC in Ogbaru.

He pledged the group's support for Ubah's candidacy whom he said had contributed immensely to sociopolitical development of the people of Anambra.

Awogu who received the award on behalf of Ubah described the reception accorded to Ubah by Ikemba Front, Atani Ward 2 as a mark of the people's acceptance of APC and Ubah for 2025 Anambra governorship.

He decried the condition of Ogbaru roads particularly, the Atani-Ossomala-Ogwuikpele road which had almost been cut off at Idemili and Deeper Life-Junction sections of the all important Ogbaru road.

Sir Awogu, a former Ogbaru local government council chairman, queried why the people of Ogbaru should be made to pass through hell in accessing the only road that served as their link to the world.

"It is inexcusable for that road to deteriorate to impassable condition while the state government watches standing akimbo, but rakes in hundreds of millions monthly from Ogbaru.

"Will Isuofia road be that bad without the state government doing palliative work on the immediate to ease the daily anguish of motorists and other road users?

“The abandonment of that road is akin to wickedness and an obvious sign of the placement of Ogbaru in the eyes of the Anambra State government of the day,” he said.

Awogu called on the people to remain resolute while assuring them that the government of APC under Sen Ubah would be a true government of the people.

He welcomed the new 500 members into Ikemba Front saying their entry into the APC would better the electoral fortune of the party.

“We have to stand firm and fights for the victory of the party in the coming Anambra State governorship election,” he said.

Awogu, the National Coordinator of Ikemba Front was also bestowed with an honour by Atani Ward 2.

Other national leaders of
Ikemba Front were Mary Onuorah, Women Leader, Lady National, Dr Henry Obiozor, Media and Publicity Secretary, Mr Ike Obiegbu, Ex-officio, Obidi Nwabueze, Contact and Mobilization, Inno Nwanta, Intra Party Affairs and Nwafili Emezina Admin Secretary.

ICAN Seeks More Role For Members In Public Sector, As Awka Exco Holds Retreat

Dr Joseph Aroh, 3rd Chairman of Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAN), Awka and District Society has decried the non appointment of sufficient number of members to head accounts departments in public service.

Aroh, a retired Chief Lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic Oko made the observation at the 2024 annual leadership retreat for newly elected executive of Awka and District Society on Monday.

He said having professionals in such strategic positions would strengthen the public sector accounting system as they will detect and raise alarm as appropriate in line with their training.

He said the role of accountants by their training was to check, detect, introduce controls that would reduce fraud because they had proper understanding of accounting books and the integrity to act.

“challenge is that most cases, professional accountants are not employed in the public sector, there are more of us in the private sector

“But those in the public sector also have rules and guidelines which place authorities over them, thereby limiting their capacity to perform their roles.

“Because of these factors which are largely political, their reports and whistles they blow are not considered by the officer who is supposed to act on them but when you have a professional at the helm, there are usually some impact,” he said

Aroh commended the Mr Francis Ezenwa led Executive Committee for eagerness to improve on the leadership quality in the district by organising the retreat to know and learn from past experiences.

He urged the Chairman to be courageous enough to carry the members of Exco along and ensure they worked harmonuosly.

“It is a step in the right direction, they are less than two months in office and now, they are holding this retreat just to learn from last experiences and improve on it.

“My advice is that the chairman should be humble and focused while others be

In his remark, Ezenwa who is the 9th chairman of ICAN, Awka and District Society said the retreat provided the 15-man executive committee to tap from the experience of its past leaders who were lecturers of the day.

He said members of the district would continue to uphold the founding principles of the institute which were accuracy and integrity by reporting accounts that would not mislead the public.

“This event is the 2024/2025 retreat which brings together all the newly elected members of executive committee to get guidance and inspiration from our past leaders who lecture us on those ingredients which are not in our bylaws but necessary for our success,” he said.

The retreat was themed “Succeeding Together: Collaborating Towards the Common Goal, Adhering to the Byelaws and Having Members Interest at Heart”

Other lecturers at the events were
Mr Obi Okechukwu, 2nd District Chair, Mr Kingsley Dim 7th District Chairman and Dr Seyi Olanrewaju, Awka District Council Coordinator/ Honorary Treasurer of ICAN.

Tension As COOUTH Resident Doctors Set To Down Tools over Unpaid Allowance

The current industrial harmony at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka may be lost if the grievances of Resident Doctors at the hospital bordering on non payment of allowances and poor medical infrastructure in the institution are not urgently addressed by the Anambra State government.

The doctors under the aegis of Association of Resident Doctors (ARD)-COOUTH said on Monday that they would withdraw their services without further notice if the harsh and poor working conditions persist.

Dr Onyebuchi Ichoku, President ARD-COOUTH who spoke to newsmen said the decision was reached at the Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) following the expiration of a 21 working days ultimatum issued for the government to intervene.

He said the demands included hazard allowance, Medical Residency Training Fund and implementation of 25 percent increase in basic salary with effect from July 2023

“After the expiration of the 21 working day ultimatum given to the state government to implement the basic demands of the resident Doctors or face strike action, we had an OGM where her members unanimously voted for a strike action.

“But the executive pleaded for time so we can reach out to the governor for urgent intervention.

“The OGM also called for the restoration of electricity which was disconnected about two months ago and provision of diagnostic equipment in the hospital for more effective service delivery,” he said.

The ARD chairman said the association had taken their appeal for improved working conditions to the management and State government at different times without respite expressed confidence that Gov. Chukwuma Soludo would address it if it comes to his knowledge.

He said their colleagues at the federal and states including those in the Southeast were already benefiting.

He said the members, having evaluated the situation, resolved to proceed on immediate strike action from the OGM but were prevailed upon by the leadership to give more time and allow the state government to intervene.

He said the poor working conditions had resulted in the continued emigration of their colleagues to outside the country and neighboring institutions adding that it was putting so much pressure on the existing workforce in the hospital.

“As resident doctors, we are entitled to basic allowances and funding, these entitlements are meant to ease some of our financial burdens especially at this time of severe economic hardship.

“Hazard Allowance is an extra amount of money doctors are paid for working in a hazardous environment, it is meant to encourage doctors and other health care workers to attend to patients who pose health risks to them, for example COVID-19 patients.

“For example, lassa fever which continues to claim the lives of health workers on a yearly basis.

“Medical Residency Training Fund as contained in the revised template for payment of associated allowances and course fees for medical residency training and specified by Act No 23 of medical training act 2017.

“We are also asking for a basic salary increment of 25 percent as contained in national salaries, incomes and wages commission circular of July 25, 2023.

“This circular shows that the federal government of Nigeria has approved 25 percent and 35 percent increase in the basic salary for CONMESS 6 and below and CONMESS 7 respectively,” he said.

He said ARD Congress also called for a conducive work environment including diagnostic equipment and better call rooms for members.

ANFASSC President Condemns Forgery by Members Of Supporter Clubs Coalition

Prince Yomi Ogunjimi, President of the Authentic Nigeria Football and Allied Sports Supporters Club (ANFASSC), has condemned an attempt to forge his signature to curry favour from authorities.

Ogunjimi reacted to the recent efforts by one Ogunfuwa, President of the Football Fans Club of Nigeria, to forge his signature on a document intended for travel to France for the Olympics.

He said integrity was important within the coalition of supporter groups.

"Efforts are being made to unify different supporter groups under one umbrella, this is a welcome development.

“However, there are procedures that must be followed, this brazen act by a coalition member at this early stage is counterproductive,” he said.

Ogunfuwa allegedly forged Ogunjimi's signature on a document presented to the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), claiming it had the endorsement of the presidents of five major supporters clubs in Nigeria.

Ogunjimi, however, denied any knowledge of such efforts or signing any documents.

The matter is currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police Force's Anti-Fraud Unit, led by CP Akpanudom at Alagbon and Ogunjimi's lawyers are following up on the case.

Reports have that this incident is not isolated, as Ogunfuwa had been previously arrested by Interpol's Force CID Alagbon, Lagos, in 2016 for forging documents presented to the Brazilian Embassy.

The Consular General of the Brazilian Embassy in Lagos discovered the forged documents, including fake bank statements, submitted by Ogunfuwa, who claimed to be a Protocol Officer of the Okumagba group.

Nairaland / General / ‘sheddyjoe De Entertainer’ Says Entertainment Industry Still Low In Southeast by Prisschi: 1:10pm On Jun 14
‘‘SheddyJoe De Entertainer’ Says Entertainment Industry Still Low In Southeast

Shedrack Nnanna, popularly known as ‘SheddyJoe De Entertainer’ has said the entertainment industry can thrive in the Southeast but with the support of governors of the states in the region.

Nnana who is set to launch his 8-track album titled ‘This Naija’’ on June 29 said this in an interview in Awka

SheddyJoe is a standup comedian, master of ceremonies, musicians, civil servant and presently Senior Special Assistant to Gov Chukwuma Soludo on Events and Protocol.

He said Anambra was growing in terms of showbiz activities but still a far cry from Lagos which is the melting point of entertainment in Nigeria.

‘Lagos is the melting point of entertainment today because the state government took special interest and created an enabling environment with cinemas, halls, event centres, parks and all that.

“The South East has a problem with showbiz because the environment is not supportive, what we have here are mainly beer parlour and maybe clubs we go to eat and drink.

“However, I am beginning to see the light in the tunnel, Chief Willie Obiano tried a lot for the entertainment industry, and people were coming to perform in Awka.

“That was when we began to have studios, sound engineers and stage shows, though, it still cannot be compared with what we have in Lagos,” he said.

SheddyJoe who described himself as a ‘’Total Package Entertainer’ said the launch of his album entitled “This Naija’’ would be a turning point for the entertainment industry in Anambra and an inspiration to upcoming artists.

“I believe that with what I am doing by setting the pace at people will understand that things will definitely change for good”

He advised upcoming artists in Southeast not to be discouraged by the challenge but lead the crusade for the change they desired in the industry.

He said Lagos did not become the hub of showbiz overnight because some people started it when there was no reward but for the passion they had.

“There will always be challenges, just face that challenge, you will surely surmount it, if you have a dream, go after it.

“If you know anybody that can help you realize your dream, talk to him about it because the dream will die if you do not express it,” he said.

Speaking on his album, SheddyJoe said the genre of his music is Soft Reggae, a blend of Reggae, Afrobeat, Highlife and Jazz which appealed to every stratum of the society.

According to him, songs in the album include 'This Naija’ ‘My World’ which is for lovers, and ‘’God Bless the Day I Found You' which I wrote in my secondary school days. It is a true life story of a young girl I met

“All the songs in that album were specially inspired, like Uri Oma is a popular folklore in Southeast but I used one popular in my town, Anaku in Ayamelum LGA to make the song in a modernised way,” he said.
