modernWays: I said ESPECIALLY among them. There are many Caucasians bearing south American, Australia and India names.
No one will do that for Africa, until your continent re-write her history and be among meaningful countries in the world. People borrow names, not because of their meanings or origins but because of the value attached to it. Besides, it is human nature to associate with success or the best, you don't expect people to chose/borrow names from poverty striken societies over a well recognised societies in the world. Have you seen any bearing your African names? How successful are people in South America, India and the likes you mentioned? Those bearing the names above have links to these continents (mixed parenthood) Seen any without DNA affiliation bearing these names except for Nigerians worshipping foreign names? Rewriting your whatever history starts from embracing your identity. Who are you if you are asked? Are you what the colonizers tagged you or you're what your forefathers called you? |

Obama didn't have to change his name to fit into whatever foreign narrative some of you are painting.
Same with Wole Soyinka Bola Ahmed Tinubu Nnamdi Azikiwe
And a host of others.
You do not have value, hence the need to look for oyinbo name just to feel valued and useful. |

oglalasioux: True. During the elections there's a place I hang out owned by a Yoruba woman. Most of her customers are Yoruba and I thanked God they know me by my English name. No sane Igbo man with native name dare enter that joint. Even if you show evidence that you are APC, you'll still be branded obedient/ipob. They knew, they didn't just care. Most Yorubas don't bear foreign names, so seeing someone bearing such around them automatically makes them curious. They must have researched you and knew your origin. Forget anything else, they knew. |

For the religiously naive people out there saying they changed their names after becoming Christians and going for baptism.
Did these people know that Saul's name that was changed to Paul after salvation didn't mean both names aren't Hebrew names.
Saul and Paul remain Hebrew names.
So because you're a Christian doesn't mean you must bear Hebrew names.
Christianity is not even synonymous with Hebrew as a language. |

Your Benin Oba is a Yoruba man from Ile Ife. The reason Ogiamien wan to create thier own king in the same Benin. Hahahahahahaha!
Yoruba name you Bini. Na lie? You dey see so? Check your map na. By the way, how come none of the maps posted so far showed any Yoruba kingdom worth its salt? Go and tell the Portuguese who did business with the Benin kingdom via the kingdom including eko fronts. Even from the map, you can see Benin clearly written where Eko is now situated. (There was nothing like Eko island then until the Benins named it Eko) Go and also argue with your lagos kings that traced their lineage to the Benin kingdom. Who named you Yoruba? Who named you Ilu Ibinu? You want to lie.
Yoruba had many kingdoms unlike Benin with just one kingdom. Hence, had many names. It doesn't change the fact Oduduwa was never from Benin. Your king lied. That someone is calling you nbati nbati doesn't mean that's your official name. You guys are known to degrade those higher than you including corrupting their names. Benin was what your uncivilised forefathers called Ile Ibinu because we often dealt with your people until the oyo empire came for a treaty. Oyo empire was killing and selling other Yoruba people into slavery and even got them taxed. Apart from oyo empire, the rest were mushrooms villages good enough for the slave trade. Nothing like prince in Edo land. You only had Ogiso and you were called Igodomigodo not Benin which is corruption of Ule Ibinu in Yoruba. So your Oduduwa fell from the sky? Even the first human was created, why should yours fall from the sky without dying, yet died later like all mortals? Think! The Benins had different names at different times, we named ourselves all the names we answered. Tell me who named you Yoruba and what was your name before someone else named you yoruba? |

OBA GHATO KPERE ! ISSE ! This is not necessary. We know the south West to be noise makers. It was also a foreigner that named you guys Yoruba.
All of you were scattered fighting eachother day and night.
Egbas waging war against the Aworis Ijebus against the Oyos Ife against modakeke etc
You guys were never one, the strongest of you enslaved the rest and sold them off as slaves to whoever could pay including foreigners.
You were never one, hence the thousands of obas littering the south west.
It was the Baatonus that named you lot Yoruba in the 15 00s due to the similarities in your dialect.
As for Eko, the aworis only used parts of Lagos for fishing and farming and often travel back to where they actually reside.
It was the Benins that decided to give the island area of Eko a better organization and made it administrable.
They sent chiefs and kings to run Eko all the way from the Benin kingdom.
These things are all online. I wonder why people just argue. |

For you to know that Edo people don't make mouth, the Oba came to Eko to remind the people of Eko about the history of Eko.
You can argue and insult till tomorrow, what he said won't change and history is here to back him.
You claimed Eko was existing before anyone else came, yet the Benins named the island part Eko, administered it and gave it leadership.
The Portuguese named the whole state Lagos.
So what exactly were the so called settlers doing then?
