Orjiakor left medical practice in 1996 to focus on his growing business interests in the oil and gas sector. Within a short period he had founded Abbey Court Energy Services, Zebbra Energy Limited, Shebah Exploration and Production and Abbey Court Trading Company. His Shebah Exploration and Production owned a 40-percent stake in OML 108, which has the capacity to produce 8,000 barrels of oil per day. In 2009, he merged Shebah Exploration and Production Company Limited with Austin Avuru’s Platform Petroleum to form SEPLAT Petroleum Development Company. His Zebra Energy Limited also owns the offshore deep water concession, OPL 248. Orjiakor also operates other ventures in construction, real estate, pharmaceuticals and shipping.

Our focus as an oil and energy services company is on the supply of cost-efficient spare parts and equipment to power companies, heavy industries, and oil and gas plants in Nigeria.

At the same time, we are steadily developing a reputation in the area of equipment maintenance. Our company has executed several demanding fabrication projects. We have even been willing to take on the challenge of complex Instrumentation and Control (I & C) repair work, employing our capabilities to twin the talents of local engineers with the experience of their foreign counterparts, either by the use of "hotline" (over-the-phone) consultations or by making the arrangements for these experts to come to Nigeria in person.

Cybernetics International Services Limited was incorporated in 1992 to engage in Oil and Gas trading activities. Between 1996 and 1999, the company leased a petrol station in Delta State, Nigeria and operated as an independent marketer of petroleum products on retail basis. It exited that business in 1999 on relinquishing the petrol station to its owner.

Between year 2000 and 2004, the company engaged in the supply of various types of spare parts and equipment to the major oil producing companies in the upstream sector of the Oil and Gas industry in Nigeria. Included amongst such companies are Chevron, Mobil, Agip, and Total.

Upon the decision of the oil producing companies to only patronize supply companies that have agency relationships with equipment manufacturers overseas, Cybernetics in 2004, in partnership with Multinational Expertise Limited – owned by Late Chief Aret Adams (former Group Managing Director of NNPC and also former Special Adviser to the President on Energy), signed an agreement with Craig Energy Services – a Scottish trading conglomerate to form a Joint Venture Company in Nigeria called Multinational Craig Services – (MCES). The Craig Group had been Cybernetic’s main supplier of equipment, etc since 2000.

MCES is now leveraging on the Craig Group’s global franchise agreements with major multinational equipment manufacturers to service the supply needs in the Oil and Gas industry in Nigeria. Dr. Imo Itsueli, Chairman of Cadbury Nig Limited, former Chairman of NNPC, and owner and founder of Dubri Oil Producing Company is the current chairman of the company.

Upon signing the JV Agreement in 2004, Cybernetics exited the supply business to the Oil and Gas industry in obedience to the non-competitive clause in the JV agreement with the Craig Group of Aberdeen. Cybernetics is the major shareholder in MCES Nig Ltd located on the 8th Floor of Octagon building, Victoria Island, Lagos.

On 30th November 2005, Cybernetics acquired a 10,000 Metric ton Bitumen Tank Farm facility located in Oghara, Delta State, Nigeria from Mobil Nigeria Limited.
The rehabilitation of the tank farm commenced in January 2006 and was concluded in July 2006. Trading in Bitumen, at Cybernetics’ Tank Farm, commenced in August 2006.
Currently, Cybernetics trades in Bitumen LPFO, and AGO. However, we intend to sell lubricants, Domestic Gas, Asphalt, and Bitumen Cut Back in the nearest future.

- Ambition, expansion and exploration -

Wabeco operations both inside and outside the country involve exploration, drilling, processing and exporting with a skilled team of experts.

he West African Bitumen Emulsion Company (Wabeco) is an indigenous Nigerian group active throughout the oil and gas chain. The company is involved in exploration, drilling, processing and exporting, with various plants and facilities inside and outside the country. It houses a formidable technical team of geoscientists, geologists and engineers as well as operations personnel, which underpins its diverse approach.

Wabeco offers services in all petroleum-related disciplines from the treatment of oil and gas, gas utilisation, gas re-injection and flare-out, to power generation and natural gas liquids extraction. Most recently, in its first foray into the upstream business, it was awarded a small equity share in an exploration block under the latest bidding round.
This move into exploration underlines the company’s ambition. “We don’t know enough about exploration and production of crude but we believe that we have the skill to learn,” says Silverius Okoli, Chairman and Chief Executive, who took the reins in 1996.

Under his stewardship, Wabeco’s revenues have ballooned from £6 million just six years ago to some £145 million today. “And we are still growing.”

www.wabeco-wa.com
www.wabeco-wa.com

Wabeco started with an emulsion plant in Kaduna, selling products to contractors for road building. “We began to expand from merely an emulsion products plant to what I can call a medium-size downstream oil company now.”
The company has since established a petroleum storage terminal in Lagos, and a nearby bitumen import plant. It also has a contract with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to distribute some of its products.

In addition to its activities in Nigeria, Wabeco is also engaged in Sierra Leone with a petroleum products plant serving the country. There are hopes of using this as a springboard into other territories. “Apart from operations in Sierra Leone we are trying to see if we can supply petroleum and bitumen products to landlocked countries in West Africa,” says Mr Okoli.

Last year, Wabeco formed a company in Benin, called Benin Petroleum Services, to target opportunities there. The intention is to improve the supply of petroleum products to the neighbouring state, and at the same time ease the burden on Nigerian supply.

Silverius Okoli

Silverius Okoli
Chairman & CEO of Wabeco

‘High international standards, quality staff and customer value’

INTERVIEW

Wabeco is broadening its scope beyond storage into areas such as retailing, especially in the Nigerian market, and Mr Okoli hopes one day to compete in this area with established multinational operators. “My dream has always been to have a company that will survive the storm and have high international standards and quality staff that gives value to customers,” he says.

The vision is already in place with plans to have a Wabeco branded network of at least 250 outlets in five years time. Mr Okoli plans to draw on his background in retail and marketing at Shell to make the vision a reality, creating a distinctively Nigerian high quality brand.

“Most people in Nigeria do not know how detailed retailing can be because it is not just a petrol station selling fuel,” he says. “If you don’t have a brand it doesn’t work. We are putting all our training and experience into maintaining the high safety standard that Shell demonstrated to us. We’ll make a difference.”

Dr Chief B.U.C AGHAZU @70 Indeed, the star from the East!

Dr Chief B.U.C AGHAZU @70 Indeed, the star from the East!

There are some men who lift the age they inhabit till all men walk on higher ground in that lifetime. Some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them, to quote the legendary William Shakespeare.
Dr Benson Udealo Chizoba Aghazu, Kpakpando Nnewi, is of the class that achieves greatness through personal grit and tenacity. His is a success earned through the application of human intelligence to drive an ambition. And what has always been Benson Aghazu’s ambition is to leave indelible marks on the sands of time, to leave this world better than he met it.
The tendency is often to see every rich man as one who has always had it rosy in life. But, this isn’t true of Aghazu who actually had a difficult childhood, judging from the frequency at which he moved from one school to another during his early education years: from St Andrew’s school to St Mary’s School Nnewi and finally to Holy Trinity School Calabar, between 1954 and 1958.
Born to Joseph and Udu Aghazu of blessed memory on February 13, 1946 in Akaboezem Uruagu Nnewi, the young Benson spent the next five years in Okongwu Memorial Grammar School Nnewi and Government Secondary School Owerri respectively. He won Shell PB Scholarship to study abroad, specifically at the University of Leicester England where, in June 1969, he graduated with a first class honours degree in engineering. He was to do his Master’s degree and doctorate in chemical engineering at the same university. Later, he moved to America, to the Northeastern University Boston Massachusetts, to be precise, for a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA).
By 1973, Dr Aghazu had not only become a firebrand but also a human plumber itching to impart his Western Knowledge into the people back home. And he did that with passion, courtesy of Chief Ukpabi Asika Administrator of the defunct East Central State who appointed him a lecturer at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu.
Rise to stardom
Honesty, focus and principled behaviour played key roles in Dr Aghazu’s endeavours. As a lecturer at IMT, he was in a position to receive kickbacks from contractors but, by God’s grace and providence and his own strength of character, he consistently resisted such temptation. On one particular occasion, the offer was quite tempting but he turned it down. This attracted the attention of the Administrator, Dr Asika who joyfully appointed him a director in the then Nigeria Shipping Company (NSC). A contractor had told the Administrator what transpired between himself and Dr Aghazu and a highly impressed Chief Asika decided that for being so incorruptible, the young Benson deserved a reward and that was how he was appointed a director in NSC. Shortly after that, he was also made a pioneer board member of another new outfit, Central Investment Company, where he met the likes of Paul Ogwuma,(CBN), Elias Chime, (the father of immediate past governor of Enugu State, Mr. Sullivan Chime), the late Dr. Sam Oji of Ngwo near Enugu, Chris Ofianwali and a few others. All of these men were to impact positively on his life, one way or another. Indeed, his contact with these great men not only yielded dividend but had positive impact on his life’s desires, as one thing led to another, and he was able to secure a loan to buy land at Thinkers Comer Emene where he built houses for rent and quickly repaid the loan. Thereafter, he never looked back again.
The moral in this story is simply this: honesty pays. Dr Aghazu’s integrity anchored on truth offered him a miraculous lift. And so, a ‘mere’ lecturer like him suddenly became a landlord in Enugu simply because he refused to take bribe from a contractor who did a job at IMT.
Aghazu as a community team player
The title, Kpakpando Nnewi (star of Nnewi) came to him unassumingly. He did not choose the name, instead it was proposed by Chief Daniel Udefuna Obi, Umezuligbo of Uruagu Nnewi. According to him, “I had recommended Ajanna (sand of time) as title but Umezuligbo objected saying that some people might rebrand it Ajuana (python), which is a dangerous reptile. It was then he accepted Kpakpando as a better option. It is a title that was given in recognition of his development effort in his Nnewi community.
“I’m a team player,” he said. “I have done quite a lot for my people with support of other like minds like Mr. Cletus Ibeto (Omekannaya) and Hon. Ernest Okaonye Obiora. These two people love Nnewi greatly just like I do. We have found a common factor to share views, opinions and aspirations together. And to God be the glory that these gentlemen are my friends and brothers. They always look beyond themselves in working for common good. Together, we have been able to set a good standard for our people, ever supporting issues that would help in promoting the wellbeing of the town. We are not after titles and honours, rather we are interested in establishing a worthy legacy for our people to emulate and be proud off. At times, as humans, we may disagree on some issues but then we end up mending the fence. The important thing for us is to disagree, and not to be disagreeable. Nobody does it alone, especially in a heterogeneous society like ours.”
Nnewi Land and what we did
Dr Aghazu’s activities in reshaping Nnewi ethos was summarized in a book he authored: WHAT WE DID. A 159 page work spread in 10 chapters dwelt so much on the crisis and return of peace in Nnewi town. As chairman of the Caretaker Committee saddled with the responsibility of returning the town to peaceful co-existence, Dr. Aghazu found the cross too heavy, yet fully prepaid to carry the burden, at least to eradicate the dirty local politics in Nnewi.
Hear him: “I was labeled a rebel, but I did not lead a rebellion against the Igwe of Nnewi or any other person. Rather, I led a rebellion against the existing order of things that made it impossible for our town to present the first eleven in ‘Nnewi football matches’.
The book also contained Chief Ejiamatu Igbokwe’s temporary control of Nnewi market, the Oyido Commission of Enquiry, the emergence of Nzuko-Ora, the apex socio-cultural body of Nnewi, and finally the return of peace. It’s really a compendium from the man at the epicenter of Nnewi contemporary politics
“What we did was worth doing for the sake of humanity,” he noted. “We had to dream impossible dreams about what Nnewi was to become, and to take proactive steps for a better future. What we did as members of Nnewi Improvement Union was to give new order for political officers by negotiation. We did a lot to change a particular area from having the prerogative to produce a leader in Nnewi. We were challenged by circumstance to set good record and move the society forward. We laid a road map for succession, whereby the next traditional ruler would be firm and equipped to discharge his traditional duties. Thank God, today, Bar Obianefo Orizu, the crown prince has been empowered and fortified for the task ahead. That’s what we fought for, and the idea is gradually falling into place”.
On Nnewi Personalities
I love Nnewi town. I love the people, just like they love me. And it’s the wisdom of God. I have cultivated a lot for people to harvest from. In the course of my activities, I have encountered very many people in Nnewi, including Professor Edwin Nwogwugu, an incorruptible and fearless gentleman; Chief Innocent Okafor (Cento) a pioneer industrialist; Vincent Chima, who always advises me to run away from enemy traps; Hon. Akweke Nwafor Orizu who reminded me that if I see anybody who defeated someone in a battle, I should not fight him to avoid being another victim; Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a giant and fearless agent of change whose pardon gave me the rare chance of visiting Dodan Barracks Lagos; Dr Azuka Onweluzor, a former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands in old Anambra State who thought me how to pursue important course and Dr Virgy Etiaba, first female executive governor in Nigeria whose humility remains unparalleled, among many others.
Nnewi and other towns
The major difference between Nnewi and other towns in Igboland is that yam, cocoyam, maize and other crops yield in large quantities in their towns but Nnewi soil yields substantial human beings. There are so many giants in different business and academic spheres in the town. There are also a multiple of inspiring personalities worthy of mention. God, indeed, over-blessed the town and that’s why progress and development have been on increase even after the Civil War.
Affliations & service to humanity
