Following my invitation to Alhaji Aliko Dangote to consider Ilorin for a future refinery, many have asked a legitimate question.

Can an inland city like Ilorin compete with Lagos when it comes to crude supply, logistics and access to international markets?

My answer is simple, yes, potentially, but not by trying to make Ilorin another Lagos, but by serving a purpose Lagos may struggle with.

Ilorin's advantage is precisely that it can serve a different purpose.

Lagos has the coastline, deep water access and proximity to international shipping. It is therefore naturally positioned to remain a major refining and export hub for Europe, Asia, the Americas and the wider Atlantic market.

An Ilorin refinery does not need a coastline to receive crude.

It can be supplied through a combination of dedicated crude pipelines from producing regions; expanded national petroleum infrastructure; strategic crude storage;
pipeline connections to multiple supply corridors and, where commercially viable, rail as a supplementary logistics option.

Nigeria produces crude in the Niger Delta, while emerging inland production prospects provide opportunities for future diversification of feedstock sources.

A refinery should be located not only close to crude, but also close to its customers.

And this is where Ilorin becomes a sound pitch.

Ilorin sits at a strategic junction between the South and the North.

A refinery here could potentially serve Nort Central Nigeria, the North, and neighbouring African markets, while retaining access to the South West.

Instead of transporting huge volumes of refined products from the coast deep into the interior, Nigeria could bring refining capacity closer to the consumers.

That means potential savings in transportation,storage, road congestion, product evacuation, distribution time and logistics risk.

The bigger opportunity is an Ilorin Energy and Industrial Corridor.

A major refinery could anchor petrochemicals, gas processing, fertiliser, power generation, industrial manufacturing
storage, engineering services, logistics, aviation fuel, lubricants and other energy intensive industries.

Ilorin could become an inland energy gateway connecting Nigeria's major markets with the wider African market.

Lagos can remain Nigeria's major coastal refining and global export hub.
Ilorin can develop as an inland refining, distribution and African market hub.

One faces the ocean.
The other faces the continent.
That is not duplication.
That is diversification.

And diversification is how serious economies reduce systemic risk and logistics costs.

Only Lagos can serve as a regional (ECOWAS) transshipment hub in Nigeria except Bakassi Deep water Seaport or IBOM deep water Seaport which can serve as transshipment hub for ECCAS ( Economic Community of Central Africa States) where you have Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and others.

When you compare Lagos Ports, Cotonou Port, Lome Port, TEMA Port (Ghana), Abidjan Port, Banjul and Dakar Ports, you will observe the commercial activities and the Shipping routes and activities along ECOWAS ports is very high compared to ECCAS. This is one of the reasons it is easier to get investors to invest in Deep water Seaport Project at Lagos, Ogun and Ondo States.

Take his so called struggle for 'reparations'. He was the most unlikely champion for a cause of that nature. Given his history, would that struggle have gained any real traction if he had become president? Of course not.

Fela was very bitter about the row with Decca right up till the very end. Many people don't know about it because it happened so long ago.

Your view about an MKO presidency is an uncommon but bold one. It would have been very interesting to see how things would have played out had he been allowed to assume power.

He is viewed by some as a 'hero' today but close scrutiny of the man's history in business and politics make for very uncomfortable reading. My personal view (like yours) is that an MKO presidency would probably have turned out exactly like BAT's presidency has.

There was nothing special about Fela's row with Afrodisa. Agreement is Agreement. What happened was political. MKO ABIOLA was not the sole owner of Afrodisa (formerly Decca West Africa). Ebenezer Obey, a musician who was already on the label of Decca West Africa before indigenization was also a major shareholder. He invited MKO ABIOLA to buy shares and both of them were major shareholders at that time. OBEY had been with Decca before Fela joined, Obey became Shareholder after indigenization and eventually became the owner

The same scenario happened between King Sunny Ade and Chief Bolarinwa Abioro of TYC and was settled by Court.

M.K.O' s Decca Records' handling of Fela's royalties and contracts with other artistes (like the Lijadu Sisters) back in the day showed me exactly why he would have turned out just another Tinubu failing woefully in office.

In 2022 after Ohaneze Ndigbo released blackmailing and assault statement immediately Tinubu won the APC primary after a very tough and difficult tussle with several people killed at Owo to distract Akeredolu stand at the Primary, I had expected Baba Ayo Adebanjo to remember similar attack against MKO ABIOLA in 1992 after the Jos SDP Presidential Primary, but instead he led the attack against Tinubu. Baba Ayo Adebanjo and Doyin Okupe led the attack, they left almost at the same time. They met each other in Mortuary.

MKO was never the sole owner of Decca West Africa. I will not waste my time on this. After indigenization when Decca became Afrodisa, he wasn't the sole owner.

This is just video editing and animation, except it happened between Nahco and Seven Eight along Airport Road where majority of the people are from South East. There were arrays of APC supporters on the roads to the Island singing and dancing. There were security men strategically placed in different places. Also, many people were very sceptical of his return except for the APC people that littered different places along the routes.

The reason why some particular people worked so hard to blackmail DANGOTE Refinery's IPO on different Social Media platforms is known to some of us. They went all out against the IPO as if they are fighting the battle of their lives. DANGOTE suffered under Goodluck Jonathan. Umaru YARADUA allowed it because he wanted to build a political base by destroying OBASANJO Political Base that brought him to power. After his death when Goodluck Jonathan fully settled down, he completely moved against the indigenous corporations by creating Import based economy using the Money OBASANJO saved in Foreign Reserve and high crude oil price.
